Introduction. Perhaps <strong>the</strong> most endur<strong>in</strong>g symbol <strong>of</strong> <strong>American</strong> <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Vietnam</strong> <strong>War</strong> is <strong>the</strong> POW/MIA flag. It has become a symbol <strong>of</strong> steadfastness, honor,<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrity, and character. Even now, nearly 30 years to <strong>the</strong> day s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> war ended, <strong>the</strong>se<br />
heroic men represented by that flag hold a very special place <strong>in</strong> <strong>American</strong> military<br />
history. When we hear <strong>the</strong>ir stories, we <strong>of</strong>ten wonder, “What was it really like? Would I<br />
be able to endure as <strong>the</strong>y did? What made <strong>the</strong>se men so special?”<br />
We know today that our <strong>American</strong> military is <strong>the</strong> best equipped, best tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
fight<strong>in</strong>g force <strong>the</strong> world has ever encountered, but has it always been that way? When<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary circumstances <strong>the</strong> <strong>American</strong> POWs faced <strong>in</strong> North <strong>Vietnam</strong>,<br />
were <strong>the</strong>se men tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> such a way that <strong>the</strong>y knew exactly what to do when <strong>the</strong>y found<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se dungeons a half a world away from home? How realistic can tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
be? How can a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g environment adequately duplicate <strong>the</strong> horrendous conditions<br />
<strong>the</strong>se men faced? Do <strong>the</strong> POWs <strong>the</strong>mselves feel <strong>the</strong>y were prepared?<br />
This research project <strong>in</strong>tends to show that no amount <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g could have fully<br />
prepared our men for <strong>the</strong> gruel<strong>in</strong>g captivity <strong>the</strong>y faced <strong>in</strong> North <strong>Vietnam</strong>, but ra<strong>the</strong>r it was<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir heroism, <strong>in</strong>novation, imag<strong>in</strong>ation, and character that cause us to hold <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> such<br />
high esteem. <strong>The</strong>se traits cannot be taught directly, but certa<strong>in</strong> levels <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g can help<br />
develop <strong>the</strong>se characteristics. <strong>The</strong>se characteristics led <strong>the</strong> POWs to f<strong>in</strong>d creative ways to<br />
communicate, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> command, avoid giv<strong>in</strong>g aid and comfort to <strong>the</strong><br />
enemy, and return with honor. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g may have provided some basic survival skills,<br />
but <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>credible sacrifice and leadership <strong>of</strong> our POWs was more significant <strong>in</strong> allow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>m to persevere.<br />
First, <strong>the</strong> research focuses on <strong>the</strong> protections afforded POWs by <strong>the</strong> Geneva<br />
