Ottawa-Carleton University SEG Student Chapter
Department of Earth Sciences
University of Ottawa and Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Annual Report 2012-2013
Introduction
The Ottawa-Carleton University SEG Student Chapter (OCUSEG) experienced yet another
successful year in 2012-2013. Total membership amounted to 129 registered students and the
event organization committee saw a more cohesive and well distributed workload, which led to
better organization and the addition of a student poster symposium at the annual Prospectors
and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) in March, as well as continuing our other flagship
event, our annual Career Day, in February 2013. We also planned & completed an extremely
successful student chapter field trip to Arizona in May 2013. Finally, we hosted Dr. Steve
Turner, the 2013 International Exchange Lecturer with the SEG, for a well-attended lecture to
the Chapter in September 2013 conjunction with the earth sciences departments of uOttawa
and Carleton.
The OCUSEG Executive Committee hopes to build on the past year’s experiences and increase
the student participation and interest in economic geology.
Summary of Annual Activities
Meet and Greet
We began our year much the same as before with a relaxed meet and greet at a local
restaurant. At the meeting, the executive committee was introduced, the upcoming year's
events were highlighted and the perks of membership in our student chapter as well as
becoming a full SEG student member. Complimentary appetizers for the students were provided
at the meet and greet.
Professional Lecture
The OCUSEG was unable to bring in a lecturer this year for a professional lecture this past
school year (2012-2013). However, we were successful this fall as our chapter brought 2013
International Exchange Lecturer Dr. Steve Turner to the department on Sept. 30 th , giving a talk
entitled “Discovery of the Mesel, Batu Hijau, and Elang Deposits, Indonesia: Successful
Greenfields Exploration”. It worked out especially well with Dr. Turner’s timing, as he was also
able to give a lecture at the Geological Survey of Canada the same day. Our chapter provided
coffee and snacks before his talk and the executive also went out for lunch with Dr. Turner
afterwards, as well as giving him a tour of the University of Ottawa campus.

2
Career Day
Our seventh annual Career Day took place this year on February 2 nd . During this two day event,
both major and mid-tier mining/exploration companies, in addition to consulting firms and
provincial and federal surveys are given a chance to speak to the students about their projects,
the economic geology industry and the opportunities that come with an Earth Science/Geology
university degree. The students are also taught the importance of networking at this event
particularly in the evening of the first day when we host a social event at a local pub where the
students are given the chance to talk to industry professionals in a relaxed environment. The
event wrapped up on the first day this year, as current market conditions forced companies to
cut much of their student hiring and subsequently did not want to conduct interviews. The 2013
career day participating companies/organisations were: PDAC, ACA Howe, Sander Geophysics,
APGO, the Ontario Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada and Transition Metals.
PDAC Trip
Next to Career Day, a significant portion of the year's work and planning goes towards planning
a trip to the annual PDAC convention in Toronto. This involves planning the transport (often in
several coach buses) and accommodation for approximately 100 students. The PDAC
convention provides the perfect opportunity for the OCUSEG students to meet with industry
professionals from all over the world and from every stream of geology, to participate in
workshops and speaking sessions and for some to gain employment for the summer or for a
permanent position. Funding for the trip to PDAC comes in large part from the Ottawa-Carleton
Geoscience Centre (OCGC) and the remainder of the costs are paid by the students
(~$200/each).
Minerals Colloquium
This year marked the 4 th annual Minerals Colloquium held at the PDAC 2013 conference in
Toronto. This event has become a landmark of the conference and, for the first year (of many),
the PDAC agreed to host the event in conjunction with the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Center
and the SEG Canada Foundation. This partnership came with the perks of being very well
publicized on the conference website, and also in the brochure provided to all delegates. The
additional publicity was successful, as 2013 marked the largest Colloquium we have hosted to
date. Over 700 delegates from industry, academia, and government came to see the 100
research posters being presented from students representing 21 Canadian SEG student
chapters, 1 American chapter, as well as the Geological Survey of Canada.
Funding for this years Colloquium was graciously provided by the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience
Centre, Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada, the Society of Economic Geologists
(SEG Canada Foundation), The Geological Survey of Canada, Goldcorp and Northern Shield
Resources. Our student chapter was responsible for all aspects of the Colloquium directly
related to the posters. This included encouraging student involvement from the various
chapters, collecting the poster, cataloguing posters as they were submitted and preparing a
program. A group of 10 students sorted and setup and placed the 100 posters in an organized
fashion resulting in an event that had a natural flow to it. In addition to this, our chapter was
tasked with securing additional sponsorship outside of the 3 hosting organizations.

Arizona Field Trip
The OCUSEG organized a highly successful student chapter field trip to Northern Arizona, which
included visits to the areas of Sedona-Jerome-Cottonwood-Prescott. 7 graduate students from
both uOttawa and Carleton attended this 11-day trip. Our guide was Dr. Paul Lindberg, a local
geologist who has done many years of work on volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits
in the area, and he took us on a traverse across a massive half-graben system that included
many interesting mineral deposit systems and structural elements. This included stops to
famous VMS & banded iron formation deposits, as well as tours of springs, dormant volcanoes
& a spectacular visit to the Grand Canyon. The trip was funded in part by the Dept. of Earth
Sciences at uOttawa as well as the OCUSEG.
Future Plans
In the 2013-2014 term, we hope to continue the field trip in our organised activities while
maintaining all of the activities from this past year. The field trip is tentatively planned for
summer of 2014 to Iceland. If possible, we would also like to bring in more professional
lectures on a regular basis and smaller, local field trips that can bring more students.
Again, we hope to improve our visibility in the electronic media. Last year we were not able to
get a webpage up and running, however, depending on timing this will again be a priority of
ours.
