Notation Conventions<br />

This manual uses the following conventions.<br />

<strong>Intel</strong>® <strong>Fortran</strong><br />

The name of the common compiler language<br />

supported by the <strong>Intel</strong>® Visual <strong>Fortran</strong> <strong>Compiler</strong><br />

<strong>for</strong> Windows* and <strong>Intel</strong> <strong>Fortran</strong> <strong>Compiler</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>Linux*</strong> products.<br />

This type style Elements of syntax, reserved words, option<br />

keywords, variables, file names, and code<br />

examples are shown in a monospaced font. The<br />

text appears in lowercase unless uppercase is<br />

required.<br />

THIS TYPE STYLE Statements, keywords, and directives are shown<br />

in all uppercase, in a normal font. For example,<br />

“add the USE statement…”<br />

This type style<br />

Bold normal text shows menu names, menu<br />

items, button names, dialog window names, and<br />

other user-interface items.<br />

File>Open<br />

Menu names and menu items joined by a greater<br />

than (>) sign indicate a sequence of actions. For<br />

example, "Click File>Open" indicates that in the<br />

File menu, click Open to per<strong>for</strong>m this action.<br />

This type style Bold, monospaced text indicates user input.<br />

Shows what you type as command or input.<br />

This type style Italic, monospaced text indicates placeholders <strong>for</strong><br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation that you must supply. Italics are also<br />

used to introduce new terms.<br />

[options]<br />

Items inside single square brackets are optional.<br />

(In some examples, square brackets are used to<br />

show arrays.)<br />

{value | value} Braces and a vertical bar indicate a choice among<br />

two or more items. You must choose one of the<br />

items unless all of the items are also enclosed in<br />

square brackets.<br />

... A horizontal ellipsis (three dots) following an item<br />

indicates that the item preceding the ellipsis can<br />

be repeated. In code examples, a horizontal<br />

ellipsis means that not all of the statements are<br />

shown.<br />
