CHROMEBOOK AN
ALTERNATIVE CHOICE
The explosion in powerful web applications combined with nearly ubiquitous
broadband and Wi-Fi connectivity allows nearly any software to exist as a cloud
solution. This has made non traditional mobile offerings such as Chromebooks
a potential consideration
Before diving into an alternative choice such as a Chromebook, several factors
need to be considered. For schools with investsments in Microsoft Windows
Server infrastructure, especially for networks that are focused on Active Domain,
Chromebooks are unable to participate or be managed increasing potential
security gaps. Localized applications will not be accessible unless they
are able to be utilized through a web browser. Unless a significant portion of
your existing network infrastructure is oriented towards wireless users a site
survey should be conducted to determine low signal areas that will need to be
augmented with new access points along with sufficient switching to handle the
overall traffic.
Chromebooks enable
educational institutions
to save money on both
their initial hardware
acquisition costs as well
as software licensing.
Chromebooks can in some cases, assist educational institutions to save money
on both their initial hardware acquisition costs as well as software licensing.
This can result in allowing a greater number of students to be connected
or to institute a 1:1 computing initiative.
Once you have vetted the application, domain management, wireless connectivity
requirements and possible bandwidth increases for your installation
which Chromebook do you choose?
The hardware choices for Chromebooks are limited to three manufacturers
each with an alternate spin on the internal components. While none
are radically departures, the options from Acer, HP and Samsung
do have some differences. The HP with its 14” display
can generally be eliminated from consideration
based on its cost of $329 which puts it $100
above the Acer and Samsung units.
