Chairman’s Comment
Hi everyone
Johan Strauss is going to the Queenstown Jamboree with a Daimler V8. We want firm
commitment from members who want to attend as we have an opportunity to get a special rate
at Manie Niewoudt's Guest house. An interesting fact that we are willing to reveal is that the
NJDC will consider providing some kind of sponsorship to members going in their
Jaguar/Daimlers. Although it is the "E" type 50 th anniversary it is also a place where Jaguar
enthusiasts will be together, which means that XKs and other models will be welcome. We need
your reply as soon as possible, because if the club sends all their bookings in at the same time it
will ensure that no bookings will get lost or misplaced.
Jack Clough
Barry Liggins has obtained copies of all the Jaguar spare parts catalogues, and should any
member have difficulty in obtaining spares or part numbers, they must please contact him as
he will be able to supply the correct information.
Notes from the editor
An interesting comment was passed the other day. A member asked “what does the jag club do
for me”. I am reminded of the late American President JF Kennedy, and to paraphrase him “it is
not what the Jaguar club can do for you, but what you can do for the Jaguar club”. We have
attempted to arrange car runs with the Jaguars since June 2010, however the response has been
getting less and less, we then tried organizing our runs to coincide with the Durban Early Car
Club, which resulted in even less Jaguars attending. On numerous occasions, we have provided
opportunities for various activities, but unfortunately have had very little or no response to
them. At our last committee meeting, we attempted to address this lack of interest and have now
reached to conclusion that as this Jaguar club is in name-only maybe we should consider winding
it down. In a last ditch attempt to have a Jaguar outing we are proposing that as Jaguar cars, we
attend the vintage Baynesfield hobbies fair. Details will be provided in a later issue.
- Steve
This notice concerns all Left hand Drive vehicles.
I appreciate that not all Jaguars are left hand drive, but some of the Jaguar drivers have other
vehicles that are left hand drive. This email was sent to us by SAVVA and should be taken into
consideration.
SAVVA will be hosting a web page on the SAVVA website for all enthusiasts to log their
left hand drive vehicle/s. Please log all registered, un-registered and vehicle/s under
restoration in order to ascertain the collective number of LHD vehicles in S.A.
You will be required to list your name, id number, vehicle particulars, e-mail and contact
details.
This site will be confidential and not accessible to anyone other than the authorised
personnel dealing with this on the SAVVA committee.
Should you not have access to internet then the information can be faxed to 011 435-
9821.
Please note that the final document will be a collective one from SAVVA and SAMCA. We
are meeting with MSA in order to garner support from them.
Once this information is collected savva will compile a report that will be distributed to all
the clubs prior to the document being tabled to national department of transport (ndot) for
a concession to LHD vehicles. The website will be operational by Friday 28 January to
start registering your vehicle/s on: - www.savva.org.za
E-Type: 50, but still beautiful
50 YEARS OF THE E-TYPE: Even a
half-century after its launch at the
Geneva auto show Jaguar's E-Type is
the icon of the perfect sports car.
2011 marks the 50th anniversary of
one of the most famous and desirable
cars in automotive history - the Jaguar
E-Type.
Jaguar will celebrate at high-profile
motoring events throughout 2011.
The company will mark the
anniversary specifically at the 2011
Geneva auto show - the very venue
where it was first shown - and
continue with events at Goodwood’s
Revival and Festival of Speed, the
Pebble Beach Concours d Elegance, the Nurburgring Old Timer GP and a host of Jaguar customer, dealer and
lifestyle events worldwide.
STILL INFLUENTIAL
When launched in 1961, the appeal of the E-Type blasted through the automotive world. Such is the inherent
rightness of its proportions, stance and purity of line that one is a permanent exhibit in New Yorkâ€s Museum
of Modern Art.
The now iconic E-Type set standards in automotive design and performance when it was launched in 1961. Its
influence is still apparent in Jaguar’s modern range: cars that, the automaker says, offer a peerless blend of
performance, comfort, cutting-edge technology and award-winning design.
STILL GORGEOUS AFTER ALL
THESE YEARS: The E-Type first
emerged from the factory as a hardtop;
a convertible followed to
cement the image that Enzo Ferrari
famously called "the most beautiful
car in the world".
“Half a century of progress has not
diminished the significance of the E-
Type” said Mike O’ Driscoll,
managing director Jaguar Cars and
chairman of Jaguar Heritage. It was a sensation when it was launched and remains Jaguar's most enduring and
iconic symbol.

"The E-Type is simply one of the most exciting cars yet created and a legacy to the genius of Jaguar's founder, Sir
William Lyons”
E-Type owners included celebrities such as George Best, Brigitte Bardot, Tony Curtis and Steve McQueen and the
car became as synonymous with the Swinging Sixties as the Beatles and the miniskirt.
“It's impossible to overstate the impact the E-Type had when it was unveiled in 1961,” said Ian Callum, Jaguar's
design director. “Here was a car that encapsulated the spirit of the revolutionary era it came to symbolise. The E-
Type is a design that even today continues to inform the work we do in styling Jaguars of the future”.
The car was first shown at the Geneva auto show in March 1961 and caused a sensation. It was capable of 240
km/h but cost a fraction of the price of rivals with similar performance; it was the affordable supercar and
became an instant icon - and was produced for 14 years.
MAN AND (HIS) MACHINE: Back in
1961 the Jaguar E-Type was the
ultimate car to own. Jaguar's founder,
Sir William Lyons, stands proudly by
his creation.
Some E-Type facts:
* The E-Type was presented to the world’s news media at the restaurant du Parc des Eaux Vives in Geneva on
March 15, 1961. Such was the media excitement and clamour for demonstration runs up a nearby hillclimb that
Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons instructed chief test driver Norman Dewis to drive through the night from
Coventry to bring another unit to Switzerland.
* Even Enzo Ferrari admitted it was “the most beautiful car in the world".
* The E-type’s straight-six engine had powered Jaguar to five Le Mans victories in the 1950's and by 1961, in 3.8-
litre form, produced 265bhp and 260lb ft of torque, making the car a genuine 240 km/h proposition and, like its
XK120 predecessor, the fastest production car in the world.
* At launch the E-Type cost £2256 (then the equivalent of about R4500) including purchase tax and the allimportant
optional wire wheels, the equivalent today of just £38 000 (now the equivalent of about R 400 000).
* The E-Type’s perfectly proportioned bodywork was the work of Malcolm Sayer, an aeronautical engineer who
also applied his aerodynamic expertise to shaping the earlier Le Mans-winning C and D-Type racers.
* The E-type remained in production for 14 years and sold more than 70 000 units, making it Europe’s first massproduced
sports car.
