Copies of squares for students Multiply Fractions and Mixed Numbers Number Sense 2.4 Understand the concept of multiplication and division of fractions; 2.5 Compute and perform simple multiplication and division fractions and apply these procedures to solving problems. To connect work with arrays to multiplying fractions and mixed numbers; To use the distributive property to multiply fractions and mixed numbers (See Alternative Teaching Strategy on p. 384B); To understand how to rename a mixed number as a fraction so you can multiply Learn, P. 384: Chef’s Garden. Write problem on board/overhead. Discuss. Students work with a partner to solve with models. (Provide squares.) They share solutions and strategies. (If students don’t use the squares, model the problem with them as shown at the top of 384.) Teach, P. 384; Guided Instruction questions to guide discussion. EXPLORE: Work with the concept.
