Nuts and Bolts
When you’re fighting for a championship, there are invariably
any number of high-pressure calls - and anticipation of likely
problems - to be made over the course of a season. The law of
averages however usually ensures you stumble over one of
these every so often; mechanical issues, on-track skirmishes
and bad tyre choices can intervene with even the best laid
plans.
But it’s one thing to be kicking against the wind. Having your
opponent’s goal-posts widened a meter at half-time is quite another.
So far this year’s championship has been fought out mainly in
the unlikely corner of Open 1. While not the biggest of
categories (the MG points historically rewarding the larger
classes), it’s protagonists have eclipsed the ‘natural order’ of
MG Racing with consistency and some giant-killing
performances. This effort however may soon go unrewarded
via a loophole in the rules that allows some competitors to
switch classes mid-season.
While perfectly ‘legal’, this convenience isn’t accessible to
everyone, so by its very nature penalizes those locked into
their group – veritable victims of their own technical
specifications. The weighted system that affords larger
categories more points has - in the past - balanced driver
ability versus technical advantages remarkably well. Now, on
the verge of tangibly realizing this doctrine with a 4 cylinder
MG taking outright honors we may be seeing the opportunity
unravel.
I expect an easy retort to this conundrum would be to suggest
one of the Open 1 contenders who can switch classes exploit
this rule also, but something in me suspects he won’t, having
already proven to be a formidable force in the face of an
embosomed fraternity.
To be fair, this loophole may have been born out of a desire to
maintain healthy grids, but the jury is out on the absolute
value of it. I only hope it doesn’t rob us of seeing the best drivers
out there taking on their opponents - without incurring a
50-metre penalty for simply being too good.

Whitwell’s Back
Rob Whitwell has bounced back to the form he once had. With Robin Bailey and Mort
FitzGerald not getting to the event due to mechanical issues, it was left for Whitwell to
run at the front. For the first time this year Rob came away from the weekend with the
car running cleanly and fast.
Fitted with a new sequential gearbox (and after finding a hole the size of a pin that
was blowing out oil) the car ha sendured major work to get its reliability back. Rob has
also gone down the track of an electronic dash display to document as much of the
engine telemetry as possible: “We have got it running but haven’t got the full system
working yet, the gear display doesn’t work so I’m not sure what gear I’m in sometimes,
it’s a bit of a guess” said rob at Sandown.
They have also added a data logging system which should help improve the tuning and
help rob to see how he is driving: “but we have to figure out how it works first”.
Either way rob is keen to see how it goes now he has found the problems.
“We only got the gearbox back last weekend and then we fitted it but there were a
couple of circlips missing so we had to wait to get those, but we are here and its running
really well”.
Rob headed to Mallala as the sole ‘big banger’ MG and had a great run once again,. All
of sudden he is looking at a top 5 in the Championship…Bring on Phillip Island!

Another Landmark
MG Racer is pleased to announce it has launched its very own forum, in a project that has
been discussed for a while the MG Racer team launched the forum at Sandown in July.
Open to competitors, fans, ex racers and anybody else who may want to join are welcome
with the forum already being read by many. Paul Vernall said it was a very exciting step for
MG Racing and hoped they would support the site,
“Most motorsport series these days have a forum of some form and there is no reason the
MG series couldn’t join the 21 st century with their own. Trent and I discussed the forum
and thought it would be a good way to promote the series and for anyone to discuss
MG’s”.
The site also has support
from Trent Price who was
excited at the opportunities
it presents, “The forum
is a easy way for those inside
MG Racing and those
outside to communicate,
people can ask for help,
buy and sell, discuss
events, cars and just generally
have a bit of fun.”
Although the forum opens new doors for MG Racing Paul went on to say it had a long way
to go to convince the older demographic of its worth, “Forums are a relatively new thing
and so getting the older generation to get involved is the biggest hurdle and hopefully in
time it will be a hive of activities for MG Racing in Australia and help and support.
The forum is free to join and open to anyone, log on at www.mgracing.forumotion.com

Aberley moving forward
Chris Aberley was an unknown when he turned up at Winton early this year, straight out of the SA MG F series
he had previously seen the vic series but that was as far as it went. Throwing himself in the deep end in
2010 he brought his MG F Cup over and enjoyed his experience he came back for more at round two. He
made steady progress despite being a big change from his racing experience (Mallala and winton) at the fast
and flowing yet will bite phillip island g.p circuit. At the last round at Sandown Aberley was in the deep end,
another new circuit and yet more cars he hadn’t seen before. He kept his head down, kept out of trouble
and was starting to make solid progress as the weekend rolled on.
Then round four came around, a second shot at Sandown and Aberley was keen to get out and pick up where
he left off, and what a gain. Aberley jumped forward in race one to put himself inside the top 6, over the
remainder of the weekend he put stunning results in coming home inside the top 10 and right behind fellow
F Cup competitors.
Hewson steps up
As per our last issue the championship was a tooth and nail fight between
Greg Hewson and Jason Holmes, however Greg Hewson has taken
a gigantic leap and staked his claim on the 2010 championship. Hewson
has fitted a new motor with a significant increase in power which has
clearly stated his intention that he wants the championship. Hewson
has dropped 3 seconds off his previous personal best and put himself 2
seconds up the road from Holmes as they look towards the next round.
In what was looking like an enthralling battle for the remainder of 2010
it looks like Greg may now have taken the jump that will put him out of
Holmes reach.

Flying Robbo
Jim Robertson seems to finally have got his Midget going the way he intended, during the dry Sunday races
he had his car inside the top 10 all day, fighting the Cup car of Akhurst and the ZR of Holmes during the
three Sunday races. Robertson’s Midget runs a Datsun L18 motor as opposed to the A series engine usually
found under the bonnet. The car has previously run with everything from the A series, to the L18 and even
a turbo rotary, it also features radical bodywork which differentiates it from normal Midgets...
Dream Result
A dream team...Adrian Akhurst Automotive had the best possible race on Saturday afternoon at Sandown,
Cars prepared by AAA came home 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 TH and 6 th . Jason Holmes who although prepares the car himself
in Melbourne deals with AAA for numerous components and parts that are sourced from the UK, Akhurst
himself came home a stellar second after leading early on, Kim Cole drove a very solid drive to come
home 3 rd while Rodney Gibb who’s car also gets support from AAA came home 4 th , while 6 th went to Chris
Aberley, one of Akhursts Mechanics at his workshop...A promotional dream!

Shake Up
In a move that has divided the series Matt Baragwanath has moved across to the fast road class of MG
Racing, previously campaigning in the Historic class he has swapped classes mid season to chase the
outright Championship. The only question mark is can he beat Kim Cole in the points chase to make the
difference?
Trophy boys entertain
The SA MG F drivers can be proud of what they have achieved in a short period since the series inception,
many Victorian drivers found the racing that was had in the Trophy series to be very close and entertaining
with many lining the fences to watch. The best racing was had between the O’Malley brothers who battle
hard and close up the front with 5 drivers crossing between the Trophy and Victorian series. There has
been interest from some of the Trophy guys to run a round of two of the Victorian series in the future
which can do nothing but add to the mid field competition.
Age is not a hurdle
There’s life in the old girl yet, The Schapell’s were a great addition to the MG ranks at Mallala, Usually found
at Historic race meetings in their wonderful TC Special’s they decided to have a run with the MG boys at
Mallala. It has been a number of years since a TC run with the series at a non Historic race meeting and the
boys showed not to discount them! In what was a great display of driving they not only threw down some
competition they took out the Historic class. So all those TC’s can come back out from the woodwork again!

Price look to 2011
Ken Price has now set his sights clearly on 2011, with his weekend coming to a halt early for the third straight
round. Ken came unstuck over the fast top section of Sandown in greasy conditions and was a passenger as he
hit the Armco. The damage looked largely superficial although some of the coolers and piping will require
work. Ken sat on the sidelines for the rest of the weekend as he ponders what to do next.
Lange join Hutchinson at Mallala
A welcome addition to the MG and Invited ranks at Mallala was TSOA member Roger Lange in his unmistakably
orange Triumph GT6, He joined fellow MG supporter Tom Hutchinson at Mallala in representing the
Triumph flag with both holding it high. Qualifying a strong third outright he was set to rustle some feathers
however a couple of spins set him on the fight back for the remainder of the weekend. .Battling with both
Jason Holmes ZR and Greg Hewson’s Midget however he couldn’t quite get Hewson as they lapped very
similarly. He was very happy with how his weekend panned out and was a welcome addition to the Invited
grid. As for Hutchinson, his winning ways continued…Where’s Mort?
Former Champion Paul Trevethan made a welcome return to his Orange V8 and had a solid weekend
For the second time in 2010 the MG’s headed to Sandown Raceway in Melbourne and the ever changing Melbourne
weather greeted the field with a cool overcast climate on Saturday.
The greasy conditions made it a challenge for drivers to find real pace. The session was marred early on however,
with Ken Price meeting the Armco early on in a bizarre accident. Thankfully he was okay, less could be said for the
car. By the end of the session Bob Nordlinger had taken pole position from Paul Trevethan (B GT V8). Right on the
big V8’s tails were Jason Holmes (ZR) and Greg Hewson (Midget) on the second row. In a surprise row three spot
was Jim Robertson in his L18 powered Midget, who held off Adrian Akhurst for 6 th spot on the grid.
Making a return to the series was Mike Trathen in his MG Midget who qualified 15 th and David Vernall (MG B) in 20 th
spot.
As the field took to the track for the opening race, the heavens began to open in traditional Melbourne style. With it
being too late for tyre changes drivers were left with the gamble’s they had taken on wets or ‘R’ tyres, Paul Trevethan
was a notable absentee from the front row with the wet weather keeping him in the garage Nordlinger would seemingly
have a clear run to turn one.

VOLUME 2
, ISSUE 2
Page 12
Kim Cole locks a brake as he heads Greg Hewson (Midget) and the rest of the field into turn 1
As the lights went green Nordlinger sat there wheel spinning while Jason Holmes got a ripper start from the second
row and whizzed around Bob. Hewson was also struggling with traction compared to Holmes but still had enough to
inch past Nordlinger. But it was Adrian Akhurst from position six that got a start more accustomed to a drag strip;
launching past the two white Midgets and even Holmes on the run to turn 1. Akhurst would lead the field through the
opening corners with Holmes tagging along, Hewson settling into third spot, Nordlinger having dropped to the lower
end of the top 10 by the time the field were on the back straight. Adrian Akhurst streaked away up the back straight
with Holmes in arrears, the spray engulfing the mid field as they drove up the back straight.
After the opening lap it was Akhurst, Holmes with a three second lead from Hewson, with Kim Cole (F Cup) having a
amazing first lap, Rodney Gibb (TF Cup) and Chris Aberley (TF Cup) rounding the top six places. Holmes was now
pursuing Akhurst on the run to turn one and looking racy. Down the field Tom Hutchinson came past with handfuls of
wheel spin as he weaved his way through the pack. Up the back straight and Holmes was much more confident
than Akhurst who was pioneering into each corner, Into Dandenong Rd and Holmes snuck down the inside to take
the lead. Hewson had disappeared after a spin dropping him down to 6 th ; this elevated the three Cup cars into 3 rd ,
4 th and 5 th places. Mike Trathen was on the move in his blue midget, and now inside the top 10, Hutchinson in 11 th
and Jim Robertson going backwards very quickly now down the field. Rob Whitwell had started from the back of the
pack in the blue beast and was now into 16 th spot climbing through the field.
Over the next couple of laps Holmes extended his lead, now out to 6 seconds, and was more and more comfortable,
Hutchinson was now inside top 10 and Whitwell into 16 th . Trent Price was the quite achiever, having climbed four
spots in the opening four laps. Gibb was the next one to make an error, letting Aberley into 4 th spot and Hewson into
5 th it gave Cole the break he needed to try and bridge the gap to the front two… That is before Hewson spun again
on the entry to the front straight, dropping him down the bottom of the top 10 and allowing Matt Baragwanath a sniff
of a top 5 spot. Hutchinson was now starting to find his feet and set his fastest lap as he pursued the might of the
Cup cars out in front. With two laps remaining Trathen was now inside the top 10 closely pursued by Trent Price
who had relished the conditions in 9 th
with Whitwell in 10 th Pos Driver Car Class
.
Just outside the ten was pole sitter
Nordlinger who was clearly not enjoying
the power in the tricky conditions. Hutchinson
was running out of time as the
top three were driving at their limits, After
8 testing laps it was Holmes who
would lead the field home with a stunning
drive ahead of Akhurst and Cole in
a fantastic result for Akhursts team, Hutchinson
piping Aberley on the line for 4 th
spot, Baragwanath would come home in
a very solid 6 th leading the two midgets
of Hewson and Trathen with Trent Price
and Rob Whitwell rounding out the top
Keith Ondarchie leads Aubrey Paverd through turn 1 at Sandown
Race three and Hutchinson was non starter leaving Whitwell
to get down to some hot laps, Hewson and Holmes
set off together however it wouldn’t last long, with Hewson
finding some serious speed to drive away from Holmes
leaving him vulnerable to Robertson. Wood was setting
competitive times in the GT V8 and took Chris Aberley
and Herlihy was on the move having sorted his electrical
issues; up inside the top 20 after the opening laps.
Paul Trevethan was now inside the top 5, making up for
his poor opening two race by reeling in the field, Wood
was now inside the top ten and hunting down any four
cylinder he could. Alan Richardson had moved up five
spots in the first three laps and looking settled with some
F’s ahead to pull in. Mike Herlihy was flying, up to 15 th he
was driving very well, Trathen meanwhile had fixed his car
in time for this race and having pulled the courage together
was challenging for 20 th spot, not bad have just
hours ago been sidelined after taking on a V8.
On lap 6 Holmes was passed by
Robertson. Lap seven and Baragwanath
snuch past Aberley for 9 th
backstraight with a blown motor.
Holmes and Robertson were still
battling hard and Holmes found a
on while Alan Richardson moved up to 6 th spot, relegating
Akhurst down a place. Whitwell took the lead on lap 3 and
controlled the race from there, Trevethan and Hewson sitting
race in those positions. Nevertheless, it was not over for 4 th
and 5 th places, with Holmes challenging and passing Robertson,
Jason was keen to stay there and built up a small gap -
Just enough to fend off Robertson in the remaining laps.
Robertson however had other things on his mind; like Akhurst
who had closed up and was in turn being closed on by
Richardson. It wasn’t to be however, and Akhurst couldn’t find a way past before the chequered. Baragwanath finished
down in eighth had a lonely run in the final race. The gap back to Herbert , Cole and Gibb was enough that he
didn’t need to look in his mirrors and Cole and Gibb kept the V8 Roadster of Herbert honest so he couldn’t set his
Alana loves driving her Stag, here she is in front of Mike Trathan in his Midget
MG Racer: A third place in the Invited Cars category in Round 3 of the VSCRC Alana! You
must be pleased with that?
Alana: Round 3 at Sandown was probably my best yet. After lots of tweaking the car is going
really well and I am finding my feet with my confidence growing every day. I know I have a
long way to go but I really am having an absolute ball!
Keith: I am very pleased to see a young girl like Alana competing and enjoying motor sport as
I do. Our sport and the type of vehicles usually attract only old guys like me and seeing my
daughter competing in a 1974sports car is rewarding for me and hopefully she will attract
more younger competitors!
MGR: You have a rare situation like myself; where you race with your father, on track. Do you
think it fosters your relationship?
A:I have always loved working on the cars and racing with Dad and we have always been
close. We have so much fun together on the track but now that my skills are improving the
competitiveness in both of us is really coming out. It is a great opportunity to spend time together
and we always encourage a little family rivalry!
K: This is really great family relationship. Alana and I go away racing on weekend and we
regularly watch various motor sport activities. This seems like an unusual relationship but I
find it very rewarding. My wife and Alana’s mum is not into motorsport so these event bring
Alana and me very close though sharing experiences.
MGR: Does Keith give you tips or have you found your own feet so to speak?
A: Dad always gives me advice and I hope always will. I enjoy talking to Dad and others to
hear their point of view on different tracks and I try to pick up tips wherever I can. It was defiantly
Dad that encouraged me to get into racing; first sprints and now at the State Racing.
Seeing as I am the one who mainly drives the Stag I do enjoy the rare occasion I get to give
Dad tips on how the car drives.
K: We regularly talk about events and tracks. The main tip is to have fun and I do explain
situations, tracks and car performance with her. Most other competitors are also very forthcoming
in their support and advice.

A: Really?... The norm is Dad first, me second – but you never know........
Sandown?
K: No it was great joy. But I did have a problem with my car. – Like the big fish that got
A: There was a lot of laughter as per normal after a race. The only thing is that Dad’s car
did have a slight problem and was not running perfectly. I am always very serious when I
am on the track but I did have to smile when Dad and I were passing each other on lap 1
– until the back straight of course when I got the satisfaction of passing him at staying in
front of him.
MGR: There's a quote I read that reads: “Watching your daughter being collected by her
date feels like handing over a million dollar Stradivarius to a gorilla”. Do you think it was
like that for him watching you strap into a racing car for the first time?
A: I remember when I first started racing and Dad would check my belts and helmet and
watch me like a hawk on the track. It is good to know I have someone to “watch my back”
so to speak and always encourage me.
K: I have full confidence in Alana’s ability and her determination. I really enjoy seeing her
strapped in and focused on each event.
MGR: One of our team members Mike Francis has an obsession with Alfa’s. Were you
brought into the Triumph mould (so to speak) like say supporting a football team or was
the passion there?
K: We bought a Triumph stag in the 90’s as we have two daughter and we wanted a convertible.
This lead to buying other triumphs and Alana buying her Stag (which was a rally
car) to compete in. We now have 6 convertibles.
A: My love of Triumphs first started when I was 15 and I was introduced to the Triumph
Spitfire Mark 3. To this day it is still my dream car and I was lucky enough to restore one
with Dad which began my interest in classic cars. So when I started getting into racing I guess it
was only natural to look at Triumph for a race car.
Daughter Alana leads father Keith out of turn 9 at Sandown Raceway
MGR: How have you found racing in the Invited Cars category? Has it given you more opportunity
to race and has it been enjoyable?
A: Wow – I never thought I would be having this much fun. I have only ever competed in
Sprints and watched Dad compete at a higher level for years. I now understand what Dad
meant when he would tell me how exciting racing really was. I was extremely nervous at the
beginning however the other competitors and support teams within the category have been
more than accommodating and always willing to help if there is a problem.
K: My TR4 is a group S car, while Alana’s is a Group 2. The important thing is the invited British
category has allowed both of us to compete together. These events have always been
enjoyable and the fantastic support we both get from the other competitors has made us focus
on these event rather than others.
MGR: Where do you see the advantages of the TR4
and Stag compared with the MG’s in your section of the
field?
K: The TR4 and the Stag are not highly modified and as
such are not really competitive. This year is all about
getting into the category and being as competitive as we
can.
A: I guess when I first bought the Stag I was not really
thinking about how competitive the car really was. I was
first introduced to this Stag when I was just 11 years old
as I good friend owned the car and used it as a rally car.
So when the car was up for sale, how could I say no!
MGR: What are your plans for the rest of this year and
beyond?
A: I would like get at least one more race in prior to the
end of the year. Dad and I also compete in the Winton 6
hour relay event which is in October (Keith’s team won
and Alana won the ladies trophy). Next season I would
like to my position to improve a little but I do know that
my experiences this year have been the best yet!!!
K: The remainder of this year should see the addition of
another Triumph driven my Brother. This will make three
of us! I am building a TR6 that hopefully will be more
competitive than our existing car. An MGF is still not out
of the question!...

Rob Whitwell continued his Sandown form but didn’t quite have the speed to match Hutchinson
It has been 4 years since MG Racing visited Mallala; last time was part of the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships,
this time being a solo round of the local series. Vastly different conditions with the event run in August
rather than February… 28 cars took to the opening race - a very healthy field for a race some 10 hours away from
the normal habitat. Late exclusions were Robin Bailey who’s championship defence has been a struggle, FitzGerald
as well being left without an engine. Leading the MG field was Rob Whitwell who bas boyed by a stellar Sandown
round. Championship protagonists Greg Hewson (Midget) Jason Holmes (ZR) and Kim Cole (TF Cup) were all
there, leading into the round the experience of Cole around the technical layout was thought to be a big advantage
while Holmes was desperately praying for rain to offset the advantage Hewson now had.
The invited British field was strong with local expert Tom Hutchinson being joined by fellow Triumpher Roger Lange
in his striking Triumph GT6. Victorians Jim Robertson, and David Mottram had made the trip in their Midget and Lotus
Elise respectively. Other local men were Mark Goldsmith in his Austin Healey 3000 and Troy Ryan in his Sprite.
Qualifying was chaos, joined with the F Trophy playing havoc with setting a good time for both classes. so we’ll jump
straight to race 1.
The pack was led away for its opening 5 lap race by Tom Hutchinson. Tom had not been to Mallala in a number of
years due to various issues and on his return was on the money, Hutchinson by blitzing everyone in race one and in
turn trumping Whitwell. Tom set a 1:13.84 on the way to a twenty second win, showing the capability of the fastest
Triumph on earth! Whitwell was left a lonely second as he came to grips with the circuit some 4 years after he last
drove there.
Greg Hewson again showed the jump he had made was for real, two seconds quicker than Holmes ZR the little
Midget attempting to stay with Whitwell
but just couldn’t do it. Holmes had Pos Driver Car Class
qualified 7 th and early on set about trying
to get in front of the Cup cars, he got
past Ken Price first, then when Lange
him long to dispose of Rodney Gibb for
running a strong 4 th to the flag. Gibb
Price and Akhurst battled in their Cup cars, Akhurst was as high as 6 th before Robertson and then Price
knocked him down a peg into 8 th place, Price making a strong return after a heartbreaking season to finish 7 th .
Championship challenger Cole was taking it easy; playing the waiting game and not make any mistakes in the
opening race knowing he needed to consolidate. He followed Akhurst home in 9 th just ahead of Mottram’s
Elise in 10 th . A hectic opening race in the top 10; with many drivers sorting out what they were left to rue (due
to the muddled qualifying), with
most being able to sort themselves
out.
The Historic class is one that is
the home to the MG B, but not
the case at Mallala. Local
Bob’s supercharged TC blew
the B’s to the weeds! Bob
chased Baragwanath’s fast
Rod O’Malley was doing the
strong 13 th in the opening race was
a great start as he beat Alan Richardons
B V8 home ahead of Troy
Dontas another who was doing
both series. Bill Schapel then finished
19 th in his TC Special from
Michael Herlihy who was left further
down the field due to losing 3 rd
Trent Price leads Cody Hill in their MG F’s
The final race for the weekend saw a smaller grid with a few having packed up and gone home. Hutchinson
up the front got the jump on Whitwell as the two headed off into the distance, Hewson had put his foot
down to try and stay in touch however it ended up being of no gain. Whitwell took the lead on lap 2 from
Tom as the two were setting very quick lap times, on lap 3 Hutchinson snuck back in front temporarily before
Whitwell got back to the lead on lap four. The two battled for the rest of the race with Hutchinson eventually
taking the win by half a second and taking a 3-1 score for wins on the weekend over Whitwell.
Roger Lange got in front of Holmes on the opening lap and was able to pull a gap on the little ZR, which
had no answer to the speed of the GT6, Holmes had to settle for a lonely race in 5 th with Lange going
across the line in 4 th unable to match the pace of Hewson up ahead. Kim Cole had pounced early into 6 th
and was able to stay in front of the pursuing pack for the entire race and coming home a well earned 6 th .
Directly behind him was one of the battles of the race, after initially a great start Akhurst dropped to 17 th
where he staged a fight back over the next 9 laps, he picked off cars one by one through the historic MG’s
and the F’s. By lap 5 he was into 13 th place chasing Chris Aberley’s TF Cup car, picking off Aberley he slotted
in front of Alan Richardson and salvaged a well earnt 11 th place by lap 9; a good recovery overall to
catch the pack in front so quickly.
Bob Schapel followed Mottram for most of the race in 9 th but as the race went on he was more and more
eager to get the Lotus. On lap 8 a opportunity presented itself and Schapel took it, moving up into 8 th behind
Jim Robertson it was a stunning result for the T type.
Jim Robertson had set himself a challenge in the final race, starting down the pack he had the pace to
challenge for a top 5, a clean start he managed to get in front of Mottram and Schapel and chase down Kim
Cole. Although he didn’t have enough speed to make significant inroads he ensured Cole couldn’t rest and
pushed him the whole way home.
Tenth place in the final race
went to Baragwanath, after
a tough weekend he was
able to challenge Mottram
for 9 th but unable to make a
pass he was happy to finish
the final race with a solid
points haul.
Aberley and Alan Richardson
had a ripping race long battle.
Initially it was Aberley who
started with the advantage in
13 th but the big V8 of Richardson
moved to 14 th in the opening
two laps and on Aberley’s tail.
Aberley lost out to the V8 on lap
four., But he didn’t give up, the
only hiccup being when boss
Akhurst came barging through
making up lost ground. Fortunately
for Aberley, Richardson
got held up slightly and it allowed
Chris to close right back
up.
What can you say about Tom Hutchinson other than simply stunning
On lap 8 he made his move,
down the inside and immediately
went defensive to hold position.
Aberley would eventually hold
off Richardson to the line in an
enthralling race. Behind these
two was the challenge of Rod
O’Malley and Trent Price, it was
a battle all on their own and
O’Malley seemed to have
enough to stay in front of the
eager Price. The positions
wouldn’t change over the duration
of the race, to Price’s frustration
as he searched for ways
The South Australian MG F Trophy is becoming one of the best race series in South Australia, for a series in
its formative years still it can boast some handy steerers having sat in the driver’s seat from long time racers
to V8 Brute series race winners.
The series is based on identical MG F’s (no need to be Sherlock for that!) however they do invite similar F’s
to run when the Victorian series lands in the city of churches. Three Victorians took the plunge for the series
with all three raving about how great the racing was throughout the field as many Victorians watched on with
amusement at how addictive it was to watch.
Race 1 on Saturday was just five laps, Rodney Gibb, Ken Price and Chris Aberley in their Cup spec MG F’s
led the field and drove into the distance, but not without some good hard racing with the three’s fastest laps
being under half a second apart (and came across the line just 3 seconds between them). The real attraction
however as Trophy cars and Steve O’Malley was the man to catch in #69. Steve’s brother Rod also runs in
the series and the two fought hard on the track - no love lost there! Steve held off a had charging Adrian
Akhurst in the opening race, Adrian taking Rod O’Malley on the penultimate lap to steal second place.
Youngster Cody Hill in his opening year of circuit racing has settled into the series well, starting down the
field he chased hard, moving up the field every lap, 10 th , 9 th , 8 th , 7 th , and looking very comfortable on the tight
Mallala layout. He chased Rod O’Malley in the late stages of the race but fell short settling for 4 th ahead of
Troy Dontas who has run at the Victorian Winton round before.
Victorian (and sometimes South Aussie - when he wants to be!) Kim Cole, is one of the men to catch in the
the series;, his opening race was a mixed one starting inside the top 10 he got a great opening couple of
laps, running as high as 7 th before Cody Hill knocked him down a peg, followed by Troy Dontas, leaving Cole
in 9 th place. Tyson Jeanes is a newby in the series, his ex ‘MoPro’ MG F looking very nice, he was another
with a solid start before he was left ruing a mistake that dropped him down to 11 th . Hamish Gibson and Graham
Stewart battled hard with Stewart knocking Trent Price down a spot on lap 4 after Trent had climbed up
to 12 th . Neil Williams and Aubrey Paverd had rounded out the field in the opening race however this doesn’t
tell the full story. The ‘Trophy’ cars separated from 1 st to last by just 14 seconds!

Three into One, This is what the MGF Trophy is all about, close hard racing
Page 28
Race 2 and again the front three were Cup cars. Ken Price got the jump on the other two and set about trying to get away.
Gibb initially slotted into second from Aberley, only for Gibb to have problems leaving him to retire from the race. Aberley happily
slotting in to second as Cody Hill and Rod O’Malley (running Cup spec cars) fought to the front of the field and attempted
to chase Ken and Aberley. On lap 4 Aberley wrestled the lead from Ken Price, only for it to be taken back by Ken a lap later.
The final lap of race two and Aberley got back past Price and set the fastest lap of the race, holding the lead to take the win by
just under 1 second. Cody Hill and Rod O’Malley had chased down the two leaders but couldn’t capitalize. Eventually settling
for 3 rd and 4 th .
The trophy pack were lead away by Steve O’Malley, with Akhurst and Dontas in pursuit. Early on Cody Hill was in amongst
them but by lap three was clear, leaving Steve to fight off an in-form Akhurst who was off the back of a stellar Sandown round
in his Cup car. Akhurst was applying pressure and on lap 4 made his move into the Trophy lead. Dontas was chasing in third
but was unable find a way past the two leaders. The three fought it out with Akhurst and Steve O’Malley coming across the
line for a photo finish. Dontas finished less than half a second in arrears. Graham Stewart had pounced back after finishing
down the field in race 1, he had managed to get past Cole on lap 5 and worked himself ahead enough that Cole couldn’t attack,
he was busy with Hamish Gibson all over him. Gibson slightly quicker than Cole but not enough to make a pass had to
sit behind and take 10 th spot. Williams, Jeanes, Price and Paverd rounded out the field.

Chris Aberley led the way in the MG F race at Mallala
VOLUME 2
, ISSUE 2
Page 29
Race 3 and Aberley used his experience to lead away and drive into the distance, lapping in the 1:26’s he was comfortable
quicker in his Cup car taking the win by over 10 seconds. Cody Hill was now in a Trophy car and set the fastest lap of the
Trophy cars running second. Rod O’Malley initially got away in second before Hill got past on lap 2. It was his brother
Steve who hounded him looking for an opening. Rod then lost two spot in on lap with brother Steve and Graham Stewart
going past on lap 4, Strewart then did the double on lap 5 taking Steve as well. Stewart was now in the top 3 outright and
looking strong, On lap 7 though both brothers fought back through relegating Stewart back down to 5 th , Steve taking the
win over Rod in the battle of the Bro’s. Troy Dontas and Akhurst battled for 6 th all race; unfortunately for Dontas mechanical
gremlins brought his race to a premature end on lap 5, Akhurst slotting into 6 th spot and with nothing to challenge the
battling three ahead was left to fend off Jeanes behind.
Tyson Jeanes had started down the field with Trent Price, both moving up the field each lap, Jeanes getting up to 7 th by
lap 4 with Price a lap later slotting into 8 th . Kim Cole had started in 8 th and was the loser against the two being relegated to
9 th and unable to challenge them in late stages of the race, Paverd and Williams rounding out the field both posting competitive
lap times just unable to stay with the pace late in the race.
Race 4, a 10 lapper and once again Aberley launched off the line, scampering into the distance once again in his Cup car
leaving the rest to battle it out. Stewart had set good lap times once again and managed to be first Trophy home from Rob
O’Malley who got braffing rights back over Steve, Cole had resurrected his speed holding off Trent Price for 5 th and 6 th ,
Akhurst coming a strong 7 th , Hill, Jeanes and Williams rounding out the top 10.
With two round remaining in the 2010 season MG Racer editors Trent Price and
Paul Vernall sat down to put together a mid season review, from Championship
predictions to best improver...read on
Most impressive drivers of 2010
Paul
#1—Jason Holmes. His drives this year have been stellar,
after being so strong in the Cup TF he owned to swap cars
and make such a leap forward straight away was fantastic,
back to what he knows best in front wheel drive has
proved a very good move. His drive at Sandown in the wet
for an outright win stands as a highlight.
#2—Chris Aberley. From a shaky start at Winton, Chris has
driven well all year. Perhaps a little temperamental mentally
he can get himself down and overdrive but is finding
his feet and Sandown managed to take it to the other experienced
Cup cars..
#3—Greg Hewson. He has done what we all expected another
white midget to do, as luck would have it the two
under 2 litre four pots have upstaged the fragile but faster
V8’s. Greg has driven well all year and probably surprised
himself.
Trent
#1—Jason Holmes. After a year coming to terms with the
rear-wheel drive TF, the handy Englishman has once again
got his hands on the front-wheel drive power that saw
him take out the 2006 EuroSaloons series. After some
outright State wins, Holmes is topping the leaderboard
despite a significant class handicap.
#2 - Kim Cole. After some early off-track excursions whilst
at the top of the field, Cole has matched that speed with
consistency. He has been duly rewarded with third in the
championship (only six points behind the leader) heading
into Mallala and an obvious “home track” advantage.
#3—Greg Heweson. Hardly surprising really, but given
Hewson has never run a full season it’s been hard to
gauge his consistency. Second in the championship has
put those reservations to rest.
The Best drive so far of 2010?
Trent: Jason Holmes giant-killing display at Phillip Island and Matt Baragwanath’s drive from the back of the grid after a spin at
Winton.
Paul: Jason Holmes drive in the wet at Sandown, hands down a gutsy drive to take an outright win in a front wheel drive (when
has this ever happened in MG Racing history?). A close second to Adrian Akhurst, from row 3 to first by the time the field got
to the pit exit ramp in the wet start at Sandown, holding the lead until Jason slotted in front. Adrian hung on to Jason as much
as possible for near perfect race.
Biggest moment/accident so far in 2010?
Trent: A tie-up between Kim Cole’s near miss at Phillip Island (sending half the field to the beach at Southern Loop) and Mike
Trathen’s novel attempt to enter Bob Nordlinger’s side window at Sandown.
Paul: I would say Mike Trathern and Bob Nordlinger run close for this one, but the funniest moment would be Chris Aberley
losing his car at the end of the old back straight at Winton in the wet and sending mud flying. He came back to the pits with
mud inside the car, on his helmet, just about everywhere.

VOLUME 2
Page 31
Biggest controversy of 2010?
Trent: The establishments struggle with physics; i.e. a
handy driver in a 4 cylinder with very little weight can
upset the big boys in the right conditions and a Blackpool
insurgent using the series as a personal test track/skid
pan.
Paul: Matt Baragwanath’s change of class mid season
causing angst amongst some drivers who say it wouldn’t
of been accepted in club competition, and ‘Invited British
Sportscars’…whats a sportscar again?
Disappointment so far in 2010?
Trent: The reliability woes of Damien Meyer has robbed
the series of a potential five-way battle up front, as has
the progressive slide of Ken Price’s campaign after such a
dominant opening race.
Paul: Ken Price without a doubt, was set for a shot at the
championship in the über quick Cup car…until mechanical
gremlins snuck in ripping it from his hands. A near second
is reigning champ Robin Bailey.
Best Improver or Surprise of 2010?
Trent: Chris Aberley – After a lackluster early season,
Aberley has found form and on the pace with the horde
of MGF Cups.
Paul: Chris Aberley. Can’t deny he has been the most impressive
new comer, learning to race in a Cup car is not
an easy feet. Greg Hewson is one of the best surprises
this year, no one including him could have expected to be
fighting for the championship!
Championship forecast
3rd Place
Trent:
Matt Baragwanath/Kim Cole – Couldn’t split them as
these two have been at it all year. Cole leads this pairing
going into the second half of the season whilst Baragwanath
should build on his early Historic class points hall.
Paul:
Jason Holmes. Deservedly should be at the top of this list,
stunning drives all year, third outright round 1, second
outright round 2, first outright round 3 and second outright
round 4…does consistency get much better? Greg
took the jump Holmes cant match and with the minimal
points on offer in open he can’t hold off those fast road
cars.
2nd Place
Trent:
Greg Hewson – 2 nd … But only just. The twisty corners of
Mallala should be a gift for the super-midget just so long
as his reliability holds until November Historics.
Paul:
Greg Hewson. The biggest statement that he wants the
championship is a new more potent motor in the front of
the white midget for Sandown. Taking the leap ahead of
Holmes he should come home as class winner and second
outright.
1st Place
Trent:
Jason Holmes – if his consistency holds up he should do
the business.
Paul:
Kim Cole. The current points structure suggest it will be a
fast road car topple the two open cars, its only a matter of
time.
