When <strong>the</strong> <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ure</strong> <strong>Center</strong> was being<br />
formed back in <strong>the</strong> 1960s, John Emerman,<br />
co-owner of The S<strong>to</strong>ne Oven Bakery &<br />
Café, was growing up just a few miles away<br />
in Beachwood. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong><br />
world, his future wife and business partner,<br />
T<strong>at</strong>yana Rehn, was growing up in Russia.<br />
F<strong>at</strong>e would bring <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r some 35<br />
years l<strong>at</strong>er <strong>to</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e one of <strong>the</strong> most popular<br />
e<strong>at</strong>eries in <strong>the</strong> Heights.<br />
The S<strong>to</strong>ne Oven is a local success s<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />
After gradu<strong>at</strong>ing from Connecticut College<br />
with a liberal arts degree, John headed <strong>to</strong><br />
Bos<strong>to</strong>n and worked in <strong>the</strong> restaurant business<br />
for several years. He returned <strong>to</strong> Cleveland<br />
in <strong>the</strong> early ’80s <strong>to</strong> complete a second degree<br />
in mechanical engineering <strong>at</strong> Cleveland<br />
St<strong>at</strong>e University. There he met T<strong>at</strong>yana, who<br />
had recently immigr<strong>at</strong>ed and was likewise<br />
pursuing an engineering career. John and<br />
T<strong>at</strong>yana bought a house in <strong>the</strong> Heights and<br />
raised <strong>the</strong>ir children. T<strong>at</strong>yana’s passion for<br />
crusty European bread and John’s love of<br />
<strong>the</strong> café business led <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> abandon <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
engineering careers and take <strong>the</strong> plunge in<strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> scary w<strong>at</strong>ers of entrepreneurship. Their<br />
timing couldn’t have been better, as <strong>the</strong><br />
artisan bread movement was just taking hold<br />
in this country.<br />
Thus, The S<strong>to</strong>ne Oven Bakery was<br />
born. From its original loc<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> Lee<br />
and Meadowbrook, John and T<strong>at</strong>yana<br />
have moved <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re <strong>to</strong> its current, larger<br />
loc<strong>at</strong>ion a few doors down, and have since<br />
opened additional cafés in <strong>the</strong> Galleria<br />
down<strong>to</strong>wn and <strong>at</strong> E<strong>to</strong>n Collection in<br />
Woodmere. Last year, <strong>the</strong>y partnered with<br />
Bridget Thibeault <strong>to</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e Luna, <strong>the</strong> new<br />
bakery and crepe café <strong>at</strong> Cedar Fairmount.<br />
Throughout <strong>the</strong>ir business careers,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y have maintained a deep loyalty <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
community in which <strong>the</strong>y live and work.<br />
“Keeping <strong>the</strong>se communities alive and vital<br />
and staying connected with neighbors —<br />
th<strong>at</strong>’s really wh<strong>at</strong> it’s all about,” says John.<br />
“These days, people value close access<br />
<strong>to</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ure, good restaurants and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
amenities. Th<strong>at</strong>’s wh<strong>at</strong> makes <strong>the</strong> Heights<br />
communities a gre<strong>at</strong> place <strong>to</strong> live and do<br />
business.”<br />
John and T<strong>at</strong>yana demonstr<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
dedic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> community and green<br />
spaces by being a generous donor <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>N<strong>at</strong>ure</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Shaker</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong>. Several<br />
years ago, <strong>the</strong>y made a commitment <strong>to</strong><br />
don<strong>at</strong>e a percentage of each Tuesday’s<br />
sales <strong>at</strong> The S<strong>to</strong>ne Oven <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ure</strong><br />
<strong>Center</strong> — a rel<strong>at</strong>ionship th<strong>at</strong> is now known<br />
as “S<strong>to</strong>ne Oven Tuesdays.” “We know <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>N<strong>at</strong>ure</strong> <strong>Center</strong>,” John said. “We used <strong>to</strong><br />
take our kids <strong>the</strong>re when <strong>the</strong>y were young,<br />
and we knew our contributions would be<br />
going <strong>to</strong> an organiz<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> is good for <strong>the</strong><br />
community.”<br />
We <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ure</strong> <strong>Center</strong> are gr<strong>at</strong>eful for<br />
<strong>the</strong> support of John, T<strong>at</strong>yana and The S<strong>to</strong>ne<br />
Oven. We share <strong>the</strong>ir commitment <strong>to</strong> our<br />
community, and we value <strong>the</strong> partnership<br />
th<strong>at</strong> has evolved. So when you s<strong>to</strong>p by The<br />
S<strong>to</strong>ne Oven (perhaps on Tuesdays!), please<br />
thank John and T<strong>at</strong>yana for <strong>the</strong>ir support of<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ure</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Shaker</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong>!<br />
