Dear Friends,
As fall changes to winter, I am enjoying
the chance to reflect on an extraordinary
year at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes.
In the past year, thousands of smiling and
inquisitive school children participated in
our field trip and camp programs, learning
from our naturalists and beginning a lifelong
appreciation for nature and respect for our
environment. Our restored marsh started
to teem with life, and we began important
improvements to the Stearns Trail. Children
and their parents enjoyed a variety of family
activities, while adults were able to explore
their many personal interests — from birding
to gardening with native plants. Our trails remained
free and open to the public, welcoming
walkers, joggers, birders, and ever-growing
groups of friends and neighbors. And
behind the scenes, we made great progress
on several strategic initiatives that will assure
our success for years to come. It has, indeed,
been a remarkable year.
It is a pleasure to present this annual Report to
the Community, which summarizes our accomplishments,
pays tribute to the many people
who helped make them possible, and extends
our deepest thanks to our members, donors,
and institutional supporters. As you will
read, Fiscal Year 2012 (September 1, 2011 —
August 31, 2012) was a year of success that
reaffirmed our commitment to our mission
and energized us as we look to the future.
There are too many people to thank individually,
but I want to extend our gratitude
to Michael Novak, who provided extraordinary
leadership as President of the Board of
Directors for the past two years. Michael’s
vision, energy, and hard work have been an
inspiration to all of us, and we are delighted
that he is remaining on our Board. As Michael
steps down, we welcome Cindy Klug to
her new position as President for Fiscal Years
2013 and 2014. Cindy has a long history with
the Nature Center and a deep understanding
of our role in the community. We all look
forward to working with her.
Above all, we thank you for making our programs
and projects possible, and for helping
us remain a green urban oasis that is open
free of charge for all to enjoy throughout
the year. We applaud your efforts on behalf
of sustainability and the environment, and
we look forward to seeing you often in the
coming year.

Discover Your Backyard
Located in the heart of Cleveland’s east
side, the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes
is truly the backyard of the Heights. Our
walking trails and building are open yearround,
encouraging visitors to experience
how restorative time spent in nature can be
any time of the year.
In addition to our trails, we offer a variety
of classes, camps, and workshops designed
to keep people connected to nature.
Children of all ages visit us on field trips
and participate in Outdoor Adventure
Camps. Workshop topics for adults include
edible gardening, canning and preserving
your harvest, building a rain barrel, and
composting. Our family programming
encourages parents and children to
experience nature together, while our
naturalist-led hikes allow us to share our
expertise with outdoor explorers.
And it’s all right here in your community
backyard.
Fiscal Year 2012 was brimming with activity
on our trails and in our classrooms and
exhibit spaces. We welcomed an estimated
30,000 visitors who enjoyed our twenty
acres and diverse habitats or participated in
our programs. In the past year:
• More than 7,600 area students visited
the Nature Center for environmental
education field experiences. An additional
1,500 students were reached through
off-site programming. Our hands-on,
engaging sessions for preschoolers
through high schoolers support Ohio’s
Academic Content Standards and include
topics such as “Migrating Monarchs,”
“Doan Brook Geology,” Wetlands,” and
“Reptiles and Amphibians.”
• We strengthened our Jenny Goldman
Environmental Educator in Residence
program for underserved youth at
Cleveland’s Michael R. White School by
serving 110 fourth, fi fth and eighth grade
students during a 20 week program and
158 additional students through field
experiences.
• Parents and children enjoyed low-cost,
family-oriented programming, including a
popular outdoor Family Campfi re Night,
two indoor Family Fireside Nights and a
special summer Pollinator Picnic.
• We offered hands-on workshops about
sustainability topics such as urban
gardening and canning, and celebrated
the legacy of conservation icon Aldo
Leopold. As part of the year-round
Centennial Celebration, we partnered
with the City of Shaker Heights by
hosting a lecture from their Elegant &
Edible Series about how to make the most
— and least — of invasive weeds.
• Our signature special events — Pestival
and the Summer Benefit (this year’s theme
was The Gem in Your Backyard) — once again
attracted sell-out crowds as hundreds of
supporters came to the Nature Center.

• We benefitted from the enthusiastic work of
407 volunteers, who donated their talents,
expertise and over 7,200 hours of time.
• The safety of our Stearns Trail was
improved, as we rebuilt three grounded
boardwalks; pressure washed all decks and
bridges; added rails, new railroad ties, and
gravel to many locations; and redesigned
steps and swales.
• Our marsh came back to life following
its two-year restoration. With hundreds
of volunteers, including many school
and corporate groups who rolled up
their sleeves and helped in this effort, we
removed thousands of invasive narrowleaved
cattails and replanted the marsh with
an additional 4,000 native plants and shrubs.
• We moved forward with our strategic
planning process, which will help chart a
course for the Nature Center’s future.
• We continued existing partnerships and
started new ones with many organizations,
including: CMSD’s Place-Based Learning
Collaborative, Talespinner Children’s
Theater, Heights Arts, Doan Brook
Watershed Partnership, The Lake View
Cemetery, Cleveland Museum of Natural
History, Geauga Park District, The Nature
Conservancy, Shaker Historical Society,
City of Shaker Heights, Audubon Society,
Shaker Rotary Club, University Circle,
Inc., Ruffi ng Montessori School, and the
new Montessori High School at University
Circle, among others.

Donor Spotlight
When the Nature Center was being
formed back in the 1960s, John Emerman,
co-owner of The Stone Oven Bakery &
Café, was growing up just a few miles away
in Beachwood. On the other side of the
world, his future wife and business partner,
Tatyana Rehn, was growing up in Russia.
Fate would bring them together some 35
years later to create one of the most popular
eateries in the Heights.
The Stone Oven is a local success story.
After graduating from Connecticut College
with a liberal arts degree, John headed to
Boston and worked in the restaurant business
for several years. He returned to Cleveland
in the early ’80s to complete a second degree
in mechanical engineering at Cleveland
State University. There he met Tatyana, who
had recently immigrated and was likewise
pursuing an engineering career. John and
Tatyana bought a house in the Heights and
raised their children. Tatyana’s passion for
crusty European bread and John’s love of
the café business led them to abandon their
engineering careers and take the plunge into
the scary waters of entrepreneurship. Their
timing couldn’t have been better, as the
artisan bread movement was just taking hold
in this country.
Thus, The Stone Oven Bakery was
born. From its original location at Lee
and Meadowbrook, John and Tatyana
have moved the store to its current, larger
location a few doors down, and have since
opened additional cafés in the Galleria
downtown and at Eton Collection in
Woodmere. Last year, they partnered with
Bridget Thibeault to create Luna, the new
bakery and crepe café at Cedar Fairmount.
Throughout their business careers,
they have maintained a deep loyalty to the
community in which they live and work.
“Keeping these communities alive and vital
and staying connected with neighbors —
that’s really what it’s all about,” says John.
“These days, people value close access
to nature, good restaurants and other
amenities. That’s what makes the Heights
communities a great place to live and do
business.”
John and Tatyana demonstrate their
dedication to the community and green
spaces by being a generous donor to the
Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. Several
years ago, they made a commitment to
donate a percentage of each Tuesday’s
sales at The Stone Oven to the Nature
Center — a relationship that is now known
as “Stone Oven Tuesdays.” “We know the
Nature Center,” John said. “We used to
take our kids there when they were young,
and we knew our contributions would be
going to an organization that is good for the
community.”
We at the Nature Center are grateful for
the support of John, Tatyana and The Stone
Oven. We share their commitment to our
community, and we value the partnership
that has evolved. So when you stop by The
Stone Oven (perhaps on Tuesdays!), please
thank John and Tatyana for their support of
the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes!
Volunteer of the Year
This year’s “Volunteer of the Year”
award recipient is Laura C. Gooch. In the
past year, Laura has spent over 30 hours as
a member of the Natural Resources Tree
Subcommittee identifying and tagging ash
trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer on
the Nature Center property. She has also
provided more than 50 hours of service this
year gathering migratory bird information
through the bird-banding program.
Laura has been an active member
of the Nature Center for many years.
She served on the Board of Directors
for three consecutive three-year terms
ending in 2009. She also served on the
History Committee to celebrate the 40th
anniversary of the Nature Center and was
a charter member of the Natural Resources
and Facilities Committee.
Laura authored The Doan Brook Handbook
in 2001 and has taught courses on issues
surrounding the Doan Brook. She has
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil
engineering, with expertise in environmental
engineering and water resources management,
and she is now serving on the Board of the
Doan Brook Watershed Partnership. She
is an avid birder and photographer and is
often seen around the Nature Center and
Shaker Lakes with her camera and a pair of
binoculars. Congratulations Laura, and thank
you for all you do for the Nature Center!
