To All Hudson Dealerships and Service Outlets - Compression Checks
An engine that fails to develop proper compression cannot be tuned to satisfaction. Compression should be checked with the
engine at operating temperature with a reliable compression gage.
1) Remove all spark plugs
2) Remove carburetor air cleaner and open throttle
3) Insert compression gauge in each spark plug hole in turn and crank the engine with the starter.
4) Compression at each cylinder should be at least 100 pounds. Compression between cylinders should not vary more than
10 pounds.
NOTE: If gauge moves up in jerky steps of 10 or 20 pounds at a time, it generally indicates a sticky or leaking valve. If two
adjacent cylinders show low compression, a leaking head gasket or loose cylinder head bolts are indicated.
5) If compression is low, inject a small amount of oil into the cylinder to seal the rings and recheck.
6) If compression is higher on second test, worn rings are indicated.
7) If compression remains low on second test, valve operation is faulty or piston may be cracked or damaged.
Correct any unsatisfactory conditions found on the compression test before continuing with the tune up.

Instrument Panel - Maintenance: 1953-1954 Jet, 1954 Hornet & Wasp
TS 95-03
File Under, Service General
Below are the procedures for instrument removal and lamp bulb replacements as applied to 1953-1954 Jet and 1954 Hornet
and Wasp models.
Jet - 1953-1954
The instrument cluster on the Jet for 1953 and 1954 may be laid back to make all instrument removal and installations
accessible by first removing six nuts from ¼ inch studs. All instrument light bulbs are removable from behind the instruments,
and without removing the cluster, except the high beam indicator light bulb.
To remove that bulb, it is necessary to first unbolt and lay the instrument cluster back from the dash. Then remove the
speedometer cover and two screws holding cover to speedometer.
In view of the inconvenience of replacing the bulb, be sure to use a Mazda 44 which is the longer life bulb.
The glass sections of any of the three instruments may be replaced by first removing the screws and retainers from the inner
side - accessible only after laying the instrument cluster back from the dash.
Hornet & Wasp
Any one of the eight light bulbs may be replaced by reaching up behind the instrument panel.
To replace the speedometer, electric clock, fuel gauge, temperature gauge or voltage regulator, it is necessary to
remove the instrument cluster. First, disconnect battery positive lead and disconnect speedometer. Remove eight 5/16” nuts
from studs that hold the instrument cluster to the dash. These are accessible without the necessity of removing radio.
Protect dash and shift control, leave all wires intact, laying instrument cluster back with glass downward. Care must be
exercised in the removal and installation of the speedometer, account of bending or damaging the indicator, to see that it lines
up with the upper edge of rivet on speedometer face plate with approximately ½ inch clearance between the indicator and face
plate.
When installing instrument cluster, tighten one stud, then check all lights and speedometer for operation.
To replace the instrument cluster glass, first remove as described above, then remove six metal screws which hold the glass
retainer in position.
Hudson Jet and Super Jet - Carburetor Float Level
Hudson has released information on the above subject to their dealers as follows:
"Reports have been received from the field that some Jet and Super Jet engines may hesitate or cut-out
when making a sharp turn. This condition can be corrected by raising the carburetor float level.
In such cases, it is recommended that the air cleaner, carburetor dust cover and bowl cover assemblies be
removed and the float level checked and reset, if it is found to be too low.
Raising or lowering the float level is by bending the lip of the float, which contacts the float needle, to
reduce or increase the measurement between the soldered seam of the float and the projection on the
float cover.
In this case, bend lip until the float level is raised from 1/2 to 7/16 of an inch. This results in raising
the level of the fuel 1/16" and eliminates the condition of momentary starving on a sharp turn."

Exhaust Pipe and Muffler Clearance - 480, 490 Series - 501, 502-13/16 503 and 504 Models
Shown in the illustration above are the exhaust pipe and muffler spaced in the proper position. Should the
clearance between the muffler and the tail pipe bracket be less than that shown it may be due to the front and rear
sections of the exhaust pipe not being fully telescoped or to the exhaust pipe not being telescoped into the muffler
sufficiently.
If necessary, loosen the muffler clamp and shift it forward on the exhaust pipe sufficient to obtain the 3/4 inch
clearance shown at the rear of the muffler, The 15/16 inch clearance between the exhaust pipe and dirt shield is the
minimum that should be allowed.
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
All Hudson Owners 1938 Models - Wheels and Tires
TS 98-05
File Under: Service, General
Wheels:
Several changes have been made in the wheel and tire specifications for 1938 models. The deal in
particular with the use of larger tires and the adoption of a new footed disc type wheel for the Hudson 8 models,
in which the rim width has been increased from 4" to 4½". These wider rims are also used as standard equipment
on Hudson-Terraplane Business models except Utility Coupes and Coaches, to accommodate the larger truck air
wheel tires available on all business cars at extra cost. In addition, all wheels have the bolting flange located ¼'
closer to the tire center line to reduce overhang and lower the stresses on the front axle spindles and rear axle
shafts.
The accompanying table lists the wheels and tires applying to the various 1938 models, both as standard
and optional equipment.
Tires:
Particular attention is called to the complete range of tire types and sizes now available as factory options
for the business models, which will provide proper tire capacity for practically all operating condition. The
increase in rear tire to frame clearance permits the use of these larger sizes with no interference.
1. With engine throttle fully closed, loosen the oil control cross shaft lever clamp nut "A."
2. Make sure, that oil control cross shaft lever "E' is pointing down.
3. Remove plug "F" and insert a short piece of wire until it touches end of plunger. If the engine is turned over by hand
or run at idling speed. the stroke of the plunger can be measured by means of a steel scale as shown.
4. The correct stroke is 3/16 for normal driving speeds, and 3/32 for high speeds.
5. Turning the shaft "B" the left decreases the plunger stroke. and to the right increases it.
6. After the proper setting has been made tighten the clamp nut "A", replace oil pipe plug "F" and make sure that all oil
connections are tight.
Wahl Hydraulic Shock Absorber Service
Instructions:
Due to varying Toad conditions and the personal inclinations of individual owners,
it may be be necessary in a few cases to re-adjust the Wahl Hydraulic Shock Absorbers with which Hudson cars are
equipped.
The resistance of the absorber - which cheeks the up and down movement of the car body - is controlled by an adjustment
valve (D) located in the lower center section of the unit. See illustration.
1. To adjust first remove nut (A) being careful not to lose or harm gasket (C) which should also be removed.
2. With a screwdriver securely hold the slotted screw valve (D) stationary. THIS' IS IMPORTANT! Then loosen locknut
(B). It is now possible to turn screw valve (D) either clockwise or counter-clockwise
3. To stiffen action of absorber and restrain the up and down movement of the car body, turn screw valve (D) in or clockwise
by 1/4 turns only. This closes valve opening slightly and produces a greater resistance to tile flow of oil through it.
4. To reduce the stiffness of the absorber and give the car body more freedom of movement, turn the slotted screw valve (D)
out or counter-clockwise This enlarges the valve opening and the oil flows through it more rapidly.
5. Do not adjust more than quarter (1/4) turn at a time before testing car riding ability.
6. Hold the new adjustment of the valve (D) securely, and tighten the lock nut (B) snugly.
7. Replace gasket (C) to prevent leakage and replace and tighten nut (A).
It should rarely be necessary to adjust the rear units as the adjustment of the front ones will, in the majority of cases,
satisfy the owner because changing the adjustment on the front units indirectly affects the action of the rear ones. Therefore,
after adjusting the front ones only, ride the car.
Heat Indicator and Warning Signals
OIL PRESSURE WARNING SIGNAL
The lighting of the Ruby signal to the left of the center of the instrument panel indicates reduced oil flow in the engine
lubrication system. This light should show steady when the ignition key is turned to the left while the engine is not
running. It should come on when the ignition key is turned to the left and go out when the engine starts and remain out,
except at normal engine idling speed, when it should flash intermittently.
This signal consists of a two candle power double contact lamp mounted behind the Ruby jewel. The electrical current
is derived from the post of the Electrolock head from which the ignition coil and gasoline gauge obtain their current and
is, therefore, controlled by the ignition key.
The electrical circuit is completed from the Electrolock to the double contact lamp, to the insulated contact pin "B" to
the check valve plunge, to "Ground" through the check valve body.
When the oil supplied by the oil pump to the check valve develops sufficient pressure, the plunger is lifted and the oil
passes to the engine.
When the plunger is lifted off the pin "B" the electric circuit of the signal lamp is broken and the light goes out.
If the signal becomes inoperative, turn the Electrolock switch "On" and "ground" the pin "B" by touching it and the
check valve body at the same time with the shank of a screw driver or other metal. If this doses not cause the signal to
light, look for a burned not lamp or loose wiring. If this causes the signal to light, remove the pin "B" and see that it is
straight and clean. Remove the plunger "C" after removing the screw cap "D" and see that it is clean and free to move in
the housing.
It is important that this signal flash when the engine is running at normal idling speed (car speed of seven miles per
hour), so that it will give immediate warning if the oil flow is reduced.
If the signal works properly in all other aspects hot does not flash at idling speed, when the engine oil is warm,
remove the plunger "C" and clean the small by-pass hole which passes vertically through the center of the plunger.
Hudson Reference Sheet No. 46 – (February, 1932) Hudson Motor Car Co. Detroit, U. S. A.
GENERATOR WARNING SIGNAL
When the Ruby signal to the right of the center of the instrument panel lights it indicates that the generator is not
"charging."
This signal should be lighted when the ignition key is turned to the left while the engine is not running. When the
ignition key is turned to the right the signal should light and remain lighted until the engine is running slightly above
normal idling speed (about ten miles per hour car speed), when the light should go out. The signal should relight
whenever the engine is idling.
This signal consists of a two candle power double contact lamp mounted behind the Ruby jewel. The electrical current
is derived from the post of the Electrolock head from which the ignition coil and gasoline gauge obtain their current and is
therefore, controlled by the ignition key,
The electrical circuit is completed from the Electrolock to the double contact lamp, to the left rear terminal of the
generator relay, to the insulated strap "E", to the contact spring "F", to the grounded strap ''G".
When the generator speed is such as to develop sufficient voltage to close the generator relay points "H" the relay
armature "K" moves down permitting the contact spring "F" to drop away from the grounded strap "G" opening the
electrical circuit of the signal and the lamp goes out.
Care should be taken to prevent "shorting" across the terminals "X" and "Y", when working on the relay as this will
them the full voltage of the battery on the contact spring "F" and bum it. This will not only cause the signal to be
inoperative but will also affect the operation of the "Startix."
Should the signal become inoperative, "ground" the terminal "X" to the engine (not to terminal "Y"). If this does not
cause the lamp of the signal to light, inspect for a "burned out" lamp or loose connections. If the lamp lights when "X" is
grounded, check the contact spring "F" to see that it is not burned and that the points of the contact spring "Y" and the
"ground" strap "G" are clean and making proper contact when the relay points "H" are open.
The lamps are held in position back of the Ruby jewels by bayonet locks and can be with. drawn after turning slightly
in a counter clockwise direction. Be sure when replacing the lamps that they are in their proper positions. To test, remove
the wire from the contact pin "B" of the oil check valve and turn the ignition key to the left without the engine running. If
only the right signal (A M P) lights the positions are correct. If only the left signal (0 1 L) lights the positions are incorrect
and the lamps should be interchanged. This can be done without disconnecting any wires.
ENGINE HEAT INDICATOR
The heat indicator is a distant type liquid thermometer. This instrument is accurately calibrated and sealed so that
there should be no need for service except in case of damage when replacement of the complete unit will be necessary.
The bulb, which is located in the rear of the water manifold, can be withdrawn after removing the nut "A". It should
always be removed before removing the cylinder head. Care should be taken not to dent the bulb or the tube leading to
the dash instrument.
Should it be necessary to remove the dash unit while the engine is hot, keep the glass tube upright. If the instrument
is allowed to cool with the glass tube in a horizontal position, the air in the upper end of the tube may be drawn down into
the small brass capillary tube, This will cause an abnormally high reading.
Since an air bubble cannot pass through the liquid in this small tube, it is necessary to remove the instrument and
place it in a refrigerator which will draw all the liquid from the tube into the bulb and free the air. The instrument will then
give a correct reading,

AND INFORMATION
1940 BULLETIN SERIES
TO ALL DEALERS:
A new Master Chassis Group Parts Book covering Hudson built
cars from 1930 to 1939 inclusive is now ready for distribution, and we
shall start at once to send them out to the field.
This book lists in group form the chassis parts for Hudson, Terraplane
and Essex cars for the 10 year period from 1930 up through 1939,
and supersedes previous Master or Year Model Parts Books for those years.
The grouping system is the same as employed in the 1938, 1939
and 1940 Year Parts Books, which briefly, is as follows: For purposes of
parts classification, the chassis is divided into nineteen main groups such
as Front Axle, Rear Axle, Brakes, Transmission, etc., each of which groups
is assigned a letter. Each main group is further subdivided into smaller
groups which are numbered. Thus A1 refers to the Front Axle Center, A4
is the Pivot Pin group, and A6 is the Tie Rod Group.
The book is divided into twenty sections, one section for each of
the nineteen main chassis groups and an extra section devoted to Standard
Parts. The step index makes it easy to turn to any desired section
At the start of each section is an index of the items in that section,
and immediately following the index are one or more illustrations showing
parts in that section. Each part illustrated is given an illustration number
which is a combination of the group number and an extra number which
applies to that particular part. To find the part number and name of a part
which has been located on the illustration, first turn to the group indicated by
the first part of the illustration number (before the dash), then follow down to
the particular part as shown by the last part of the illustration number.
