Conferences and Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs Emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g General Skills and Knowledge for FBCOs<br />

<strong>White</strong> <strong>House</strong> Conferences on <strong>the</strong> Faith-Based and Community Initiatives<br />

<strong>The</strong> most visible of <strong>the</strong> FBCI’s tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g efforts are its national and regional <strong>White</strong> <strong>House</strong> Conferences<br />

on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. To date, 34 conferences have tra<strong>in</strong>ed approximately 30,000<br />

nonprofit leaders from every State <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union. <strong>The</strong>se events are designed to help FBCOs understand<br />

<strong>the</strong> basics of <strong>the</strong> Federal grants process; opportunities available to <strong>the</strong>ir organization; parameters of<br />

partner<strong>in</strong>g with government (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g church-state issues); and necessary first steps for seek<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g. In addition, <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>formation on a range of o<strong>the</strong>r topics from secur<strong>in</strong>g foundation and<br />

corporate donors to skills for effectively track<strong>in</strong>g client outcomes. Increas<strong>in</strong>gly, <strong>the</strong> events also highlight<br />

partnership opportunities at <strong>the</strong> State and local level. For this reason, recent conferences have been held<br />

<strong>in</strong> partnership with governors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> past two Chairs of <strong>the</strong> National Governors Association:<br />

Governor Janet Napolitano (D-Ariz.) and Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-M<strong>in</strong>n.).<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g America’s Youth<br />

Help<strong>in</strong>g America’s Youth (HAY) is a Presidential Initiative, led by Mrs. Laura Bush, to raise awareness<br />

of <strong>the</strong> challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g youth, particularly at-risk boys, and to motivate car<strong>in</strong>g adults to connect with<br />

youth through family, school and community. In <strong>the</strong> fall of 2005, Mrs. Bush convened <strong>The</strong> <strong>White</strong><br />

<strong>House</strong> Conference on Help<strong>in</strong>g America’s Youth, which was attended by more than 500 parents, civic<br />

leaders, faith-based and community service providers, foundations, educators, researchers and experts<br />

<strong>in</strong> child development to discuss <strong>the</strong> challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g America’s youth and to share best practices shown<br />

to be successful <strong>in</strong> overcom<strong>in</strong>g those challenges. <strong>The</strong> conference featured a new <strong>in</strong>ternet resource:<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Community Guide to Help<strong>in</strong>g America’s Youth,” available at www.help<strong>in</strong>gamericasyouth.gov,<br />

developed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>White</strong> <strong>House</strong> and an <strong>in</strong>teragency workgroup representative of n<strong>in</strong>e Federal agencies.<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Community Guide” is an onl<strong>in</strong>e resource to help communities form effective partnerships, assess<br />

community needs and map resources, identify areas of <strong>the</strong> community where specific problems or<br />

challenges exist and access a program tool that functions as a repository of research-based, youth-serv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

programs. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> national conference, five regional HAY conferences have featured tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for<br />

community coalitions, help<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m streng<strong>the</strong>n cross-community and faith-based partnerships and learn<br />

about o<strong>the</strong>r successful strategies for effective collaboration, susta<strong>in</strong>ability and leverag<strong>in</strong>g of community<br />

resources. In addition to <strong>the</strong> regional tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g conferences, Mrs. Bush has traveled to many parts of <strong>the</strong><br />

country visit<strong>in</strong>g with youth and car<strong>in</strong>g adults and highlight<strong>in</strong>g community programs that are help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

prepare young people for success.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Art and Science of Grant Writ<strong>in</strong>g Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

In 2004, <strong>the</strong> Center at <strong>the</strong> U.S Department of Hous<strong>in</strong>g and Urban Development (HUD) Center for<br />

Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (CFBCI) launched its first tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g entitled “<strong>The</strong> Art and Science<br />

of Grant Writ<strong>in</strong>g Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.” S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n, nearly 30,000 nonprofit leaders have been tra<strong>in</strong>ed at 288 HUD<br />

events. <strong>The</strong> free, two-day workshop, offered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. and Puerto Rico, empowers emerg<strong>in</strong>g nonprofits<br />

with <strong>the</strong> knowledge and skills to compete for public and private grants. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, potential<br />

grantees learn about organizational development, Federal and non-Federal fund<strong>in</strong>g sources and <strong>the</strong> key<br />

components of writ<strong>in</strong>g a successful grant application.<br />

Expand<strong>in</strong>g from an emphasis on acquir<strong>in</strong>g fund<strong>in</strong>g to learn<strong>in</strong>g skills for maximiz<strong>in</strong>g limited resources,<br />

<strong>the</strong> HUD Center has added a new tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for 2008. Targeted to groups that have already been awarded<br />

grant funds, “Basic Grants Adm<strong>in</strong>istration” will cover how to successfully adm<strong>in</strong>ister grants and manage<br />
