How Tlingit Depend on the Sea.<br />

● The peoples' lives revolve around the harvest of the sea, they make seasonal rounds to go<br />
fishing and catch fish, sea mammals, and collect shellfish and sea plants.<br />
● To the Tlingit people Pacific salmon is preferred above the rest, once every year five<br />
different species of salmon follow one another from sea to upriver, the Tlingits' would then<br />
catch the fish.<br />
● The Tlingits' would also fish for halibut, they believed that halibut fishing requires the<br />
greatest ritual , because halibut fishing is the most dangerous, this is because the halibut fish<br />
grows to be the largest fish in their region.<br />
● The ritual is that when they would fish they would use a specially carved hook weighted by a<br />
rock to suspened it downwards and attract a fish. An image is carved on the hook, they<br />
normally chose an powerful animal.
How are trees important to the Tlingit Indians?<br />
● Raw materials from the forest provided the basis of almost everything the Tlingits' used.<br />
Most of these raw materials came from different trees.<br />
● The women created their baskets from harvested materials of conifer trees, such as sitka<br />
spruce roots also the inner bark of the western red cedar.<br />
● The Northwest Coast men were known for their tradition of carving and painting wood, they<br />
would carve a lot of different things from wood, such as canoes, delicate face masks, and<br />
totem poles.<br />
● The Tlingit Indians because they lived very close to the forests and sea. The forests stood<br />
ready to supply many of their daily needs.

● According to Tlingit mythology, animals were once people but were scared into the forest<br />
and sea when 'Raven' let daylight out of a box. The raven is said to bestow gifts yet play<br />
tricks on humans in a series of their stories.<br />
● The crest of Tlingit families represent the creatures that their ancestors interacted with in<br />
their past, the ancestors most likely purchased the crest in exchange for his or her life, they<br />
would receive from the creature the crest and the accompanying story, song, name, and<br />
sometimes more.<br />
● Some of the Tlingit Indians spoke languages called Tlingit or Na-Dene.<br />
● The Tlingit people had very colorful villages, they would paint animals and birds on their<br />
houses. Most of the houses were big, a lot of families lived together.
