Robotics Champions
A group of four Canadian students,
including two from the EMSB’s Coronation
Elementary School in Cote des Neiges,
emerged triumphant at the Junior World
Robocup, in Lisbon, Portugal. The foursome
won first place in one of the three
competitions held at the international
robotics tournament, which took place in
the Portuguese capitol from June 26 - July 3.
The Canadian contingent’s victory
came in the dance competition, in which
they constructed a motorized bird that
was programmed to dance and fly to the
beat of a song from the soundtrack of
Quentin Tarantino’s hit 1994 movie “Pulp
Fiction.” Sponsored by the Norshield
Development Foundation, the delegation
included Coronation School students
James Ta and Malik Sangare. Accompanying
them to Lisbon were teachers
Jasmine Kuldip and Patrick Charland,
who was responsible for developing
the project.
Justin Trudeau will be the keynote
speaker at the opening ceremonies of
the fifth annual English Montreal
School Board (EMSB) Career Fair, which
will take place October 26 to 28 at St.
Pius X High School in Ahuntsic. More
than 3,000 Secondary IV and V
students will be in attendance over
the three days.
Mr. Trudeau will kick things off on
Tuesday morning and then meet with
students in the kiosk area. The
education and empowerment of youth
are priorities that have dominated
Trudeau's professional and personal
life. Shortly after completing a B.A. in
English Literature at McGill University,
he moved to Vancouver to earn a B.Ed.
from the University of British
Columbia. For the next four years, he
devoted himself to teaching children
of all ages, in public and private
schools, in a wide range of subjects.
Now living in Montreal, he chairs the
Katimavik Board of Directors. He is
working with various organizations
and levels of government to increase
the skills and engagement of Canada's
youth in a wide range of areas. In
addition, he is working for French
Île de Savoir
his father’s emotional funeral.
This year’s Career Fair theme is
once again “Focus on Tomorrow.”
It is being sponsored by Rogers
Wireless (www.rogers.com) and
Service de Peinture Eric Incorporé
(www.peinture-eric.com).
The Student Services and Adult
Education and Vocational Services
Departments of the EMSB coordinate
this program. Chairman Tina Stoupakis,
the guidance counsellor at Vincent
Massey Collegiate, notes that the main
objective of the Career Fair is to provide
Secondary V and senior adult education
students with an in-depth exposure to
the various educational opportunities
available to them. For the second
successive year the final day will be
devoted to Secondary IV students,
providing them with an opportunity to
start charting their respective futures
two years in advance of graduation.
Rogers Wireless and Peinture Eric
will both meet with students over the
course of the three days and discuss
potential employment opportunities.
Each participating Secondary V
high school and adult education
student will take part in a general
session of 30 minutes in the St. Pius X
auditorium, during which time
presentations will include information
with respect to CEGEP and vocational
educational programs, as well as
admission requirements. There will
also be testimonials from EMSB
vocational education students who are
presently finishing their programs.
Students will then have the chance to
visit the various exhibition/information
booths staffed by representatives from
English vocational centres, CEGEPS,
universities and the Canadian Armed
Forces. Secondary IV students will only
be exposed to the latter part of the
program, since this is an introduction
for them. The charismatic Hugh
Adams, who just retired as the
guidance counsellor for Lester B.
Pearson High School, will be back as
the event’s emcee. The program will
run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m each day.
Lice Patrol Plan
includes regular
head checks
By Stuart Nulman
After a series of
persistent and repeated
outbreaks of
lice at the elementary
level at Royal Vale School
in N.D.G., it was decided that
something had to be done to put an
end to it.
“The elementary sector parents and
administration decided that we’d stop
scratching our heads over this one and
start a pro-active initiative,” said Alice
Buchanan, the school’s vice principal.
During the 2003-2004 school year, Royal
Vale experienced outbreaks of lice and
nits amongst its elementary students,
with severe outbreaks in a kindergarten
class and a Grade 1 class where more
than half the students were found
to have it. And despite two schoolwide
head checks, there were further
recurring incidents of lice.
Lice, or “pediculosis,” is a condition
in which tiny insects infest the hair
and lays eggs, called nits, that end
up sticking to the hair very close to
the scalp. Lice usually affects children
in institutional social settings, such
as schools, camps and day care centres.
It is spread via direct contact amongst
children or indirectly on items such as
hats, combs, hairbrushes and headphones.
One of the first signs of lice
is constant itching and scratching of
the head.
Royal Vale proposed that a Lice
Patrol Plan be initiated, which will
include a team of trained parents who
will volunteer their time to conduct
head checks three times a year after
major holidays, as well as conduct
ongoing head checks on a need-to basis.
A call line would also be established
to offer support and information to
parents whose children are found with
lice or nits.
The idea for the plan came from
Roslyn Elementary School in Westmount.
Four years ago, the school was struck
with a serious recurrence of lice. What
made matters more complicated was
that parents felt they were unprepared
to tackle this problem when it came
to treating head lice properly, as well
as maintain the dignity of the children
who were identified with it.
A group of determined parents
decided to take action to eradicate lice
in the school, as well as confront the
problem of the stigma that’s associated
when a child gets lice. They proposed
a plan to establish a Volunteer Parent
Lice Patrol Brigade, in which volunteer
parents were recruited, trained and
informed about how to detect lice and
follow up on individual cases. The
plan was proposed to and eventually
adopted by the school’s Health, Safety
and Security Committee and the school
council. Since then, the Volunteer Parent
Lice Patrol Brigade has conducted a
system of weekly head checks in every
classroom at Roslyn.
Due to the success of the Roslyn
program, other EMSB schools like Royal
Vale are developing their own initiatives
to combat recurring head lice that
are based on the model established
by Roslyn’s Volunteer Parent Lice
Patrol Brigade.
Paul Saunders
is a man on a
mission, now
entering his
second year as
a mentor for
principals and
vice-principals
at the English
Montreal
School Board
(EMSB).
Paul Saunders
As the role
of the school administrator becomes
increasingly complex and demanding,
the EMSB saw the need to provide a
network of support and assistance for
those who find themselves in a new
position, a new location or who feel
isolated on the job. Confident and
informed administrators better achieve
the EMSB objective of providing the
best possible education for our children.
By creating this support for the
administrators, the EMSB hopes to
improve the overall functioning and
effectiveness of its schools. With 40
years experience in education, Mr.
Saunders’ first teaching position was
at Herbert Purcell Elementary School,
which, he quips, “was so long ago
trucks were still stopping to pick up
milk at the local farms each morning!”
Mr. Saunders is the first mentor of
this kind within the EMSB, and he is
certainly enjoying it. Primarily, he
provides support and advice to the
in-school administrators. His motto is
EMSB PROFILE
Hannah’s inspiring story
“Be the best that you can be” and he
aims to provide people with the best
services whilst keeping it personal and
professional. He is quick to point out,
he isn’t there to spy.
“I am a member of the Association
of Montreal School Administrators
(AMSA) so my position is the same
as an in school administrator,” Mr.
Saunders said. “If they have a problem
I’ll work with them.”
Mr. Saunders’ other role is with
Pedagogical Services as support to
inner city schools, a topic very close to
his heart having worked in this area
for the past 20 years.
Currently there are 32 schools which
receive funding for the development
of intervention programs for inner
city schools. Mr. Saunders has been
assisting them in the development of
these programs and with the implementation
of “Success Plans” each
school has developed.
Mr. Saunders also has his own
success plan in helping to educate
children.” In order to educate a child
completely you must first fulfil three
basic needs: the belly, the heart and the
brain and only when the first two are
satisfied can one concentrate fully on
the third,” he explains.
Mr. Saunders also wants to encourage
parents to become more involved.
Instead of a “Meet the Teacher,” he
suggests “Meet the Parents” nights.
Mr. Saunders has also already successfully
implemented a number of help
Q & A:
Paul Saunders: a mentor for school principals
and advice workshops for parents
addressing topics like bullying, where
the emphasis is on “How we can
work together to combat violence
in school.” He believes in a “hands
on” approach and wants to encourage
and show parents what they can do at
home to help their children improve
at school.
While acknowledging the work
involved in visiting the EMSB’s youth
sector schools, Mr. Saunders says
he enjoys the challenge. He does this
for the children and feels that human
contact is the most important thing
in schools. “The first thing that a child
should see when they get off the
bus in the morning is a smiling face,”
he says. In fact, his choice way of
starting each day was to sit and have
breakfast with the children each
morning when he was principal at
Westmount Park School.
Mr. Saunders says the turning point
in his career of assisting inner city
schools was the day a young girl came
up to him dragging a small boy,
complaining he had stolen her lunch.
When Mr. Saunders turned to the boy
and asked him why he had taken her
lunch, the child replied ‘Because I am
hungry and have no food’ “From that
moment on,” says Mr. Saunders, “I realized
that I had to do something to help.”
Gemma Mendham is a student in
the Concordia University Continuing
Education Program. Her writing class
recently met with Mr. Saunders.
Working with Down’s Syndrome
By Clarise Samuels
Special Education Correspondent
When Hannah Lusthaus was six
years old, she started school at
Elizabeth Ballantyne Elementary
School in Montreal West. It was 1984
and the Protestant School Board of
Greater Montreal (PSBGM) had
launched a pilot project to integrate
children with Down’s Syndrome into
a regular classroom. Hannah was the
first student in the project, and she
was followed in subsequent years by
two others.
Today Hannah is 26 and she works
one morning a week as an assistant
teacher at Elizabeth Ballantyne. She
works in the classroom of Linda Mahler,
the same teacher who mentored
Hannah from kindergarten to Grade
6 when she was a student there.
“We stayed in touch over the
years,” explains Mahler. “I’m so
close to her that her parents have
appointed me her guardian in the
event that anything happens to them.
They know that I have her best
interests at heart.”
After graduating from Elizabeth
Ballantyne, Hannah went on to
Westmount High School and then a
program at John Abbott College. Now
she works at Concordia University’s
radio station, CJLO, where she is
the librarian.
“I love music,” Hannah declares
with an enthusiasm that is characteristic
of her personality. “Over the
years I’ve taken up drums, piano,
guitar, and the recorder. My favourite
music is rap. I love to listen to it, and
I try to do my own rap songs. But
it’s not that easy to think up the
words on the spot and then make
them rhyme.”
“It feels like I’ve come
back to my past.
I remember my time
here very well.”
In addition to music, Hannah
loves sports. At Concordia, she is the
scorekeeper for the men’s basketball
team. She says that her favourite past
times are traveling, talking on the
phone, and going out with her
boyfriend, whose most distinguishing
trait is his height. “He’s six foot six,”
Hannah remarks.
At Elizabeth Ballantyne, Hannah
comes in on Friday mornings to
Mahler’s class, where she helps the
children and provides assistance.
“I like coming here,” Hannah explains.
“It feels like I’ve come back to
my past. I remember my time here
very well.”
Hannah is extremely independent
and for the past three years has lived
in her own apartment in Lachine.
“She shows us what the possibilities
are for children who have this
kind of disability,” Mahler noted.
“When I worked with her during her
years at Elizabeth Ballantyne, it
became evident that there wasn’t
anything that she could not do. It just
required patience, because it always
took her a little longer than the
others. But eventually she would be
able to do it. There was nothing that
we wouldn’t try. With perseverance,
all the obstacles were overcome.”
One of the three students who
took part in the pilot project became
Hannah’s best friend and has remained
so up until this day. Hannah’s
parents are both professors of education
at McGill University.
“I’ve been to California and
Florida,” Hannah says of her love for
travel. “But I would love to visit other
places like Europe and China.”
In the meantime, she looks forward
to continuing at Elizabeth
Ballantyne in 2004-2005.
JUNIOR LEAGUE
At the end of the last academic year,
the Junior League Association of
Montreal issued a cheque of $3,000 to
Westmount High School Guidance
Counsellor Karen Allen for career
testing. As part of the school’s career
mentoring project, the cheque will go
towards the purchase of software and
tests related to career development.
For young women today, the array of
occupations to choose from is often
overwhelming and confusing. Students
are expected to make choices either for
individual courses, or course programs
new tween television sitcom on YTV. Bowser, 22, is the daughter
of George Bowser, half of the Bowser and Blue comedy team. She
portrays the character of Pattie in Fries with That? which airs
every Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. and, every Monday to Thursday
at 9:30 p.m. Bowser graduated from FACE in 1998 and has
appeared in nine theatre productions and one National Film Board
for students who have left school
before graduation to return to a
different educational setting. Nine
schools offer a variety of programs
accommodating both English and
French students. An attractive guide,
LEARN TO READ
As EMSB primary teachers, Davis
‘LICE’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2
According to the Canadian Pediatric
Society, if your child is suspected
of having head lice, follow these
instructions:
• Check your child’s hair for nits
immediately, after one week, and then
again after two weeks if another child
has head lice. This can be done by
parting the hair in small sections,
going from one side of the head to the
other, and looking close to the scalp.
• All family members (both adults
and children) must be checked if one
member has head lice. Do not treat
anyone with a head lice product unless
lice or nits are located in their hair.
• Get a treatment for head lice at
your local pharmacy.
• Follow the directions on the
product. Do not leave the shampoo or
on a theme important to a child. The
books also feature colourful character
illustrations, clearly displayed letters
for beginning readers, mini-readings
for children to practice, sound motions
to perform for each story, discussion
NEW HOCKEY PROGRAM
A unique program for students
in Cycle III (Grades 5 and 6) that will
offer a quality education and the opportunity
for elite athletes to develop their
skills in ice hockey is underway. It
is based at Holy Cross Elementary
School in St. Laurent. Tryouts were held
last spring. Log on to www.wiha.ca
for the online application form and/or
program information. You can also call
Zack Nutkevitch or John Keightley
at 636-5624. This program is being
offered to athletes recognized as
having attained a certain skill level as
determined by the West Island Hockey
Academy and the Lac St. Louis West
Island Lions hockey organization.
rinse in hair longer than prescribed
in the directions. Rinse hair well after
the treatment.
• After the treatment, remove nits
from hair by running hair strands
between your thumb and fingernail.
Put the nits in a bag, tie it up and
dispose of it.
• If live lice or new nits are found
at least seven (7) day after the first
treatment, consult your doctor about
repeating the treatment or taking other
measures.
• If your child has head lice, they
must get treatment for it before they
return to school or daycare.
• Consider establishing a regular
lice/nits head check routine with your
children (this could be done, for example,
when they are washing their hair).

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
It has now been just over six years
since the English Montreal School
Board (EMSB) was first established as
part of the Quebec government’s
transformation of public boards from
religious to linguistic.
Naturally, we experienced a lot
of growing pains during our first
term in office. The merger of
four distinct school boards was no
easy task. Complicating matters
further were the numerous financial
obstacles the EMSB was faced
with. Have we turned the corner?
I honestly believe so. One needs only
to look at the 2004-2005 budget we
adopted last June. It marked the first
balanced budget since the EMSB’s
inception. Indeed that is something
to be proud about. The budget building
process was one of inclusion
and included the presence of the
president of the Association of
Montreal School Administrators
(AMSA) around the table. I should add
that we also managed to reduce our
forecasted deficit of $3.1 million for
2003-2004. It is now expected that
number will come in closer to $1.6
million. Nonetheless, we continue to
struggle with significant underfunding
for special needs students,
building repairs, and energy costs.
Since assuming the chairmanship
of the EMSB, and prior to that as
vice-chair, I have made an effort to
go to as many schools as possible in
our system. At the end of the last
academic year I sat down with our
regional directors and the director
of adult education to map out a
specific plan that will enable me to
personally visit every one of our
schools. I think it is important to
have that type of contact with our
staff, students and parents. We have
now truly become “the EMSB” and no
longer hear the acronyms of our
predecessor boards being mentioned.
I am constantly amazed at the
wonderful things going on in our
schools and centres. Despite what
you might read in the annual Fraser
Report, our students are performing
extremely well academically. Last
year, a Ministry of Education report
showed our Board to have among the
best results in the province – English
or French – in success rates. That
means more students are starting
off in our secondary network and
Dominic Spiridigliozzi
A Balanced Budget
completing
their studies
than anywhere
else. Whether it
is math competitions,
Science Fair or a vocational
education skills Olympic meet, our
students are coming out on top.
There is also an extraordinary
spirit of generosity expressed by the
students in our schools. I do not
know of any other public school
board that has as many successful
fundraisers, be it Health and Heart
Month, Jump Rope for Heart, National
Denim Day, Brain Tumour Awareness
Day or Leucan. Hats off to our school
administrators as well for the
initiative they took with their hugely
successful Fashion Show for the
Shriners Hospital last June.
We are also fortunate to have
some supportive corporate partners,
none more so than the Norshield
Development Foundation. Its highly
successful Tomorrow's Schools Today
project promotes the increased use
of information and communications
technology in the classroom at
seven of our schools. To date, the
Foundation has contributed more
than $400,000 to the program. Last
June, when we held our first ever
EMSB Golf Tournament, Norshield
stepped in again as a major sponsor.
This year our Career Fair is getting
a boost from Rogers Wireless and
Service de Peinture Eric, while
First Canadian Financial Services is
back to support Parent Volunteer
Appreciation Evening.
I am optimistic that 2004-2005 will
bring us more good news to report.
BUS SAFETY
S
afety is our first and foremost
consideration when it comes to
transporting the EMSB's 8,500
students eligible for bussing under
the Transport Québec guidelines.
FROM
Please log on to www.emsb.qc.ca
DIRECTOR GENERAL
When I was appointed Director
General of the English Montreal School
Board (EMSB) more than a year ago,
we adopted the theme of “Together We
Are Better.” I am proud to say it caught
on nicely. Thanks to the dedicated
leadership of our staff, students and
parent bodies, we experienced a very
successful 2003-2004.
As we prepare for another academic
year, we must continue to
focus attention on our true purpose,
education, and to ensure that all
efforts and services are geared
towards the support of the educational
experiences of all of our
students, both youth and adults.
We must also continue to provide
for the needs of our staff. Our entire
management team must collaborate
in developing and establishing
a focused course of action that
will allow the Board to continue to
move forward.
In preparation for meeting these
challenges, the entire management
team recently spent two days together
engaging in professional development
and planning. At the end of the process,
Together We Are Better became more
than just words, it became our guiding
principle for the years ahead.
This year, we have proposed some
school closures. You will hear more
about this in the months ahead as
we proceed through a consultation
process. Our Planning Office conducted
an extensive overview of the entire
school network. In fact, last spring we
presented our findings to governing
board chairs and their members at a
special meeting. Documentation
presented showed that there is a
(see transportation in the services section) and read our Bus Safety Bulletin.
Antonio Lacroce
Together We Are Better
steady decline
of enrolment at
the elementary
level. In fact,
population
shifts are expected to occur in all
the Montreal-island boards except
Marguerite-Bourgeoys. Baragar
Demographics, the custom planning
software used by the EMSB and
school boards across the country for
enrolment projections, is forecasting
a drop in student numbers at the
elementary level in the next five
years. The latter is being compounded
by Bill 104, which excludes studies
in the Quebec Private School System
as grounds for student entry to the
public system. While there will be
a steady growth in the high schools
until 2008, a steady decline is
projected thereafter. The EMSB
presently has 26,886 students in the
youth sector. By 2008-2009, that
number is expected to drop to 23,552.
I am also pleased to report that the
EMSB has adopted a strategic plan for
2004 to 2007. The Education Act, as
amended by Bill 124, requires that
school boards develop strategic plans
that span over a number of years.
Plans call for this strategic plan to
be reviewed at different intervals and,
if necessary, updated. The strategic
plan represents the tool that will guide
and assist the EMSB in ensuring that
the necessary measures are taken
so that students will receive the best
possible learning experience and
have available to them the required
support structure to facilitate the
attainment of success, both academically
and socially. It focuses on
six orientations, directly or indirectly
related to the educational success
of the students frequenting EMSB
schools and centres: supporting
schools and centres in the realization
of their educational projects; supporting
student educational success;
providing safe and secure learning
environments; fostering an environment
of life-long learning; supporting
management practices that ensure
accountability and transparency;
and fostering the involvement and
collaboration of various partners in
student learning.
To all of our stakeholders, I express
my hope for a another successful
academic year.

First EMSB Scholarship
Fund Golf Tournament
Raises More than $20,000
The EMSB held its first annual
Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament on
Wednesday, June 30 at the Lachute
Golf Club (355 Bethany Road) in
Lachute. More than $20,000 was
raised. The Norshield Development
Paul Kefalas, the president and CEO of
ABB, a Switzerland-based company
that specializes in power and
automation technologies, was the
honourary chair.
Proceeds from the tournament will
help establish a new Scholarship
Program, which will benefit a number
of current students and EMSB
graduates, so that they can pursue
their post secondary studies in
vocational education, CEGEP studies
or undergraduate studies. As well,
funds will go towards the refurbishment
and maintenance of the
special collection of artwork that
adorns the EMSB’s schools, centres and
administration building.
Participants enjoyed 18 holes of golf
(shotgun start, Vegas style), brunch,
cocktails and dinner, plenty of fabulous
door prizes, plus prizes for longest
drive and closest to the pin. As a
special promotion, Lexus Toyota Gabriel
