ZIMBABWE<br />

Erin Frederick is a 1999 graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> who spent seven months<br />

as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zimbabwe, Africa. She is currently working as a copywriter at<br />

Grainger in Lake Forest, Ill., and speaks to grade schools around the area about her experiences in<br />

Zimbabwe. This is her account.<br />

November, 1998—<br />

The Beginning<br />

When I applied to become a Peace Corps<br />

volunteer, I knew I was getting into something<br />

that would change my life and challenge me both<br />

physically and mentally. My overall Peace Corps<br />

experience was rewarding and taught me a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

things about the world and about myself. However,<br />

every single day brought with it new challenges<br />

and frustrations to overcome.<br />

I spent a total <strong>of</strong> 10 months going through the<br />

application process and preparing to leave for my<br />

Peace Corps service. From the beginning, I learned<br />

the importance <strong>of</strong> patience and flexibility. I was<br />

anyone or anything familiar to<br />

me and I realized that my life<br />

was about to change.<br />

preparing to go to Eastern Europe in June <strong>of</strong> 1999,<br />

but in May I received a phone call from my recruiter<br />

informing me that I couldn’t go to Eastern Europe<br />

because I was red-flagged for asthma and certain<br />

Milestones: a 19-month summary<br />

November 1998 – Sent in Peace Corps application<br />

December 1998 – Had Peace Corps interview in Minneapolis<br />

December 1998 – Nominated for a teaching position in Eastern Europe<br />

January 1999 – Began medical and dental exams<br />

May 1999 – Denied medical clearance to Eastern Europe<br />

July 1999 – Invited to serve in Zimbabwe, Africa<br />

October 1999 – Departed for Zimbabwe<br />

October 15, 1999 – Arrived in Zimbabwe and began pre-service training<br />

December 23, 1999 – Finished training and was sworn in as an <strong>of</strong>ficial Peace Corps volunteer<br />

January 2000 – Moved to site in Chimanda and began working<br />

April 2000 – Evacuated from site and consolidated in the capital city (Harare)<br />

May 10, 2000 – Took an Interruption <strong>of</strong> Service (IOS) and returned to Chicago<br />
