Commencement events mark end <strong>of</strong> academic years<br />

The <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> academic year came to a<br />

close with the 76th commencement exercises on<br />

Saturday, May 12 in Winona. The Baccalaureate Mass,<br />

undergraduate commencement and Winona campus<br />

graduate program commencement were all held in the<br />

old gym.<br />

At the undergraduate ceremony, 273 students were<br />

eligible to receive bachelor’s degrees. Student perspectives<br />

were <strong>of</strong>fered by this year’s Outstanding Seniors, Ann<br />

Durley and Nathan Albee, and an<br />

honorary doctorate <strong>of</strong> Educational<br />

Leadership was presented<br />

to Brother Thomas Johnson,<br />

provincial <strong>of</strong> the Midwest District<br />

<strong>of</strong> the De La Salle Christian Brothers<br />

and a member <strong>of</strong> the SMU<br />

board <strong>of</strong> trustees.<br />

There were 660 students eligible<br />

for master’s degrees in graduate<br />

programs administered from<br />

Winona. Graduate student perspectives<br />

were <strong>of</strong>fered by Mary E.<br />

Costello <strong>of</strong> the M.A. in Instruction<br />

program, and Scott A. Ritter <strong>of</strong><br />

the M.Ed. in Teaching and Learning<br />

program.<br />

The Nairobi campus <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong><br />

Mary’s <strong>University</strong> hosted its fifth<br />

commencement ceremony on<br />

May 19. At this commencement,<br />

39 students received the Bachelor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Science in Education degree, and 16 students received<br />

the three-year diploma in Teacher Education. Larry Gorrell,<br />

dean, School <strong>of</strong> the Arts, represented Brother President<br />

Louis DeThomasis at this event.<br />

The Twin Cities campus graduate and special programs<br />

held commencement ceremonies on June 2. Over<br />

250 candidates were awarded degrees in the bachelor’s,<br />

master’s, and doctoral programs <strong>of</strong>fered through the<br />

Twin Cities campus.<br />
