The Justina M. Barnicke Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the first major exhibition documenting the many
manifestations of Conceptual Art in Canada. Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada 1965–1980 maps the diverse, centripetal
and eccentric manifestations of Conceptualism as its premises were enacted, hybridized and inflected by the particular
local and geographic needs and interests of urban arts communities. Presenting works in a diversity of media by over
seventy Canadian artists, many of them internationally renowned, the exhibition includes such iconic works as Michael
Snow’s Authorization, Lisa Steele’s Birthday Suit, Jeff Wall’s Landscape Manual, N.E. Thing Co.’s ACTs, David Askevold’s
Project Class and Suzy Lake’s Identity Transfers among others.
Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada 1965–1980 is curated jointly by Grant Arnold (Vancouver Art Gallery), Catherine Crowston
(Art Gallery of Alberta), Barbara Fischer (Justina M. Barnicke Gallery), Michèle Thériault with Vincent Bonin (Leonard and
Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Concordia University, Montreal), and Jayne Wark (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design).
Organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery and the Vancouver Art Gallery,
in partnership with the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (Concordia University) and Halifax, INK.
