Superintendent’s Report
Enhancing Literacy Initiatives & Data – Tappan Zee High School
Dr. Jennifer Amos, Principal, and Assistant Principals Juliet Gevargis and Richard
Neidhart, presented to the Board the ways in which they are enhancing literacy and
using data to inform instruction. The presentation reviewed results of advanced
placement exams and Regents exams and it was noted that TZHS was one of 30 high
schools to receive an award from the AP College Board. Their presentation included
other forms of data, i.e., SLO’s and local assessments, STAR assessment, and online
assessments. The presentation is on the district’s website.
School Start Times
Dr. Mitchell reviewed with the Board the results of the Late Start Times Survey stating
62% of staff; 55% of parents, and 72% of middle school and high school students
responded. In his presentation, Dr. Mitchell stressed the objective of later start times
is for health reasons, not grades or academics. The overall opinion of the parents
who took part in the survey is: 23% don’t think start times is a big factor in the learning
and health of South Orangetown students; 24% are neutral, and 53% believe school
start times and adolescent sleep is a big factor. The complete results of the survey
and related research on the subject are available on the district’s website.
PUBLIC COMMENTARY
School Start Times:
A parent expressed her concern that a decision had already been made and
leaving students at home to lock-up and get on the bus on time. She also
questioned if other arrangements would be made for early arrivals, i.e., a study
hall.
Another concern was an earlier end time at WOS and the difficulty of students
arriving home earlier. Also, why were the elementary schools grouped as one
when only one school was affected.
A parent expressed concern over the Connecticut tragedy asking if our security
was reviewed for gaps and had any corrective actions been taken.
Dr. Mitchell responded to the concerns of the parents explaining no decision has been
made again stating the design will be based on what is best for the students. A board
member asked about the possibility of expanding the YMCA program and if we knew
how many children are attending the Y’s before and afterschool program.
Dr. Mitchell stated that internal programs are being explored. Another board member
requested that when a decision is made the parents be notified as soon as possible in
case childcare arrangements need to be made.
