Department of Social Work/Homeless Grant: ROE #26: The 4 th Annual Homeless Symposium,
Pulling the Pieces Together: Serving Families in Transition will be held at Horrabin Hall, WIU on
November 2 nd from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This program is presented by the Area 3 Homeless Liaison
Department of Social Work, College of Education and Human Services, WIU. Keynote – Peggy
Dunn: Homeless Education State Coordinator at the Illinois State Board of Education.
Identification of homeless families in rural communities is difficult because of the social structure
and belief systems held in small towns and rural communities. In many cases, families are
reluctant to reveal their living situation and school staff members do not want to come across as
prying or judging. Peggy will discuss developing strategies for sensitive identification and
enrollment of homeless children while respecting their privacy and maintaining confidentiality.
Resources for school personnel, community programs, and families will be provided. For more
