829 Annual Health and Safety Performance Report 2011/2012 Safety Events Our total number of injuries was 158, we have approximately 2340 employees. Our total injuries reduced by 17% against last year’s fi gures (2010/11). This is our lowest number of injuries on record. We held two successful signifi cant Individual and Organisational Learning Panels which refl ected on fi re behaviour training injuries and a near hit related to water training. We won the ROSPA Occupational Health and Safety Sector Award for the Emergency Services Sector in May 2012 having received a Gold Medal Award in May 2011. This was received as a result of our good injury data and H&S management systems and positive culture. The number of violent incidents reported has reduced by 16% compared against the previous year. Our main type of violence report is verbal 51% then missiles 24%. We worked with the Arson Task Force to improve our violence procedure. A map below shows current violence hotspots. Our RIDDOR reportable injuries increased by 50% against last year’s fi gures (2010/11) due to slip, trips and fall injuries. Slip, trip and fall accidents are still number We had a small decrease in the number of vehicle collisions and damage to our fl eet, compared to the previous year 2010/11. (146-134) Just under 50% of our vehicle collisions occur between 0-5 mph. A small reduction in these was achieved during 2010/2011. Two thirds of our injuries occur in a controlled environment, where we are not in an emergency situation. 1 Annual Health and Safety Performance Report 2011/2012 Training and Awareness Annual Health and Safety Performance Report 2011/2012 National and Regional work We ran four IOSH Managing Safely Courses for Crew and Watch Commanders and support staff. Several of our fl exi duty offi cers were trained in Specialist Accident Investigation skills. We developed Ecademy courses on control of contractors’ procedures and hearing protection. We contributed to the National Generic Risk Assessment (GRA) project and have written 8 of the GRAs. We reviewed our Health and Safety Committee meeting structure and have merged groups and reduced the number of meetings to make effi ciencies. We are involved in scoping a framework for the National Health and Safety Review by CFRAU and CLG. We have a Regional Health and Safety Business Plan and work with our neighbouring Fire and Rescue Services regularly. CFOA West Midlands Region Risk Assessment We set up a library of risk assessments and quality assured many assessments. We have set up a formal consultation system for operational risk assessments. See the risk assessment library on the SHE intranet page under TOpS. Health and Safety Plan 2011-2012 We took part in a QSA ROSPA Health and Safety Audit of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. We led the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Health and Safert Safety QSA Audit. We monitor national safety events and provide advice on the implications of these.
