Q What are the reasons
for removing a
child’s tonsils?
A While most tonsillectomies
are performed to treat
large and obstructive
tonsils, a recent study from
the University of Michigan
has found another benefit
to removing tonsils. If
a child has persistent
snoring and/or wakes up
frequently at night, he or
she probably will not be
able to fully regenerate
energy. This leaves the
child tired and in some
cases hyperactive. (In
extreme cases, the child may
actually be misdiagnosed
with ADHD.) Removing
the tonsils allows for better
breathing, a better night’s
sleep and may also solve
some behavioral issues.
The first words Gwen Garber, shown with son Scott, heard after 30 years
of deafness were “What do you want for Christmas?” She jokingly asked
for a luxury car and a lavish vacation.
