But the tenor of what they’re doing often changes, as it does with Heritage School’s “After the Bell” program. This semester, that features such things as tennis, the basics of cooking and journalism, theater, collage art, and other things. On Monday, March 14, the State Department of Public Safety Commissioner Thomas G. Gatzunis issued a statement suspending two inspectors who had previously inspected the escalator. The names are not being released at this time, according to Gatzunis’ office. “Our continuing investigation has shown both inspectors failed to properly inspect the unit,” he said. “A barricade that should have been in place between the side of the escalator and the wall was missing. That created a gap larger than allowed by code. The code requires a barricade for openings over 5 inches. This opening was 6 1/4 inches.” The commissioner also stated that all escalators inspected by those two individuals would be re-inspected by other state inspectors. He also expressed his condolences to the family. “The loss of 4-year-old Mark is unimaginable.” Kim Freely, spokeswoman for Sears said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we’re continuing to cooperate with the investigation.” At the mall Monday, March 14, the mood was somber. “This sounds like a freak accident,” said Lisa Scokis, of Worcester, who explained that she remembered hearing about the dangers of escalators from a middle school teacher who talked about someone who had gotten the rubber of their shoe stuck on an escalator. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family,” said Sara Tanouchabong, of Auburn, expressing her condolences on Monday. Auburn Mall General Manager Holly Carpenter also issued a statement. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and are overcome with grief,” Carpenter said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.” State Police Detectives and Auburn Police are continuing to investigate, but report that there are no signs of foul play. He said one of these is summer vacation dropouts, which have ranged below 10 students all three years. This is the same for students who made the choice to leave school after the Oct. 1 deadline in 2008 there were 26; in 2009, 24 students dropped out; and in 2010 there were 23. Hackenson said he is looking forward to seeing new tools like the Advocacy Program get to work in the hopes that they might help prevent future growth of the dropout numbers. “The Advocacy program at the high school will be helpful in this process,” said Hackenson. He said during the past few week he and his staff have been working to re-establish protocols that have been hard to maintain after vacation and during the many snow days the district has experienced this winter. Hackenson said during February vacation he and other members of the faculty re-evaluated how to enforce the rules. He said with this new continuity and consistency from faculty there are fewer students wandering the halls, and less cases of tardiness. Joy Richard photo A Dudley boy died Saturday, March 12, after falling from an escalator in the Sears Department Store in the Auburn Mall Friday, March 11. “I can honestly tell you that we did not have a good start to the school year in January,” said Hackenson. “Things [were] not good at Bartlett, and I think that was with the inconsistency of missing school quite a bit in January. I don’t think we had a full week of school, we had exams, we as administrators and teachers dropped our guard, and we got frustrated to a breaking point.” He said they have also started in-school suspension to help students stay tied into the curriculum, and Saturday school where students can make up for the work they have missed during time spent in out-of-school suspension. “We are getting very positive feedback from parents already,” said Hackenson. “We reviewed the rules, regulation, and protocol for rules and regulation and how to report certain issues, and make all students accountable, this along with how to make all teachers accountable and how to make all administrators accountable. I think it is good to say that the teachers and administration over February vacation got together and decided what are we going to do about this. When buying sugar, flour, salt and spices the cheaper choice is often the best bet to save money without sacrificing quality or flavor. *** Plug in Savings: OK, you’re feeling really good about snagging a bargain on a fancy new printer or TV — until the salesperson tells you it’s going to cost another $100 for a cable to connect it! Before you dish out more money for a high priced connector at an upscale electronics store, think again. Typically, the electronic cables found at a discount department store can do the job just as well for a fraction of the cost. *** Shake, bake and save: It’s a fact that packaged spice mixes make cooking a meal easier and tastier. But convenience comes at a cost. Here’s a “recipe” for a chicken (or pork) baking coating that rivals the commercial brand for a lot less money. If you like it, plan to package up several batches at a time in ziplock plastic bags and store in your cupboard. You’ll save both money and time! Ingredients: 4 cups flour, 2 tsp. Cayenne pepper, 1 cup bran flake cereal, crushed, 2 TB parsley flakes, 2 tsp. garlic powder, 1 TB onion powder, 2 tsp. chili powder, 2 TB taco seasoning, 1 teaspoon seasoned pepper, 1tsp. curry, sweet basil, oregano, Directions: Mix all together into a plastic baggie and shake chicken or pork to coat before baking. *** Through the years this column has periodically offered advice for saving money at the gas pump. With fuel prices at an all time high, there’s never been a better time to review the many ways a conscientious driver can offset the latest jump at the pump! Downgrade: Buy the lowest grade of octane that is appropriate for your vehicle. Why pay for more if you don’t need it? Check with your mechanic or car dealer to see if it’s safe for you to switch to a lower grade. You might save hundreds of dollars a year. *** Spring Ahead: Be sure to remove snow tires in good weather. The deep tread and big tires use more gasoline than regular tires. *** The Wheel Deal: Keeping tires properly inflated and aligned equals gas savings. Periodic wheel alignments and keeping tires inflated to the maximum recommended pressure really does improve your gas mileage, according to experts. *** Haste Makes Waste: Tests show quick starts and hard breaking reduces travel time by only 4 percent, but fuel consumption is increased by nearly 40 percent. *** Slow Down, You Move Too Fast: The faster you drive, the more gas you use. Did you know lowering your speed from 65 to 55 mph can improve your fuel economy by two miles per gallon? Also, traveling at fast rates in low gears can consume up to 45 percent more fuel than is needed. *** Idle No More: Did you know 10 seconds of idling actually uses more fuel than restarting the engine? Save gas by making it a habit to turn off the car when parked. *** Rough Road Ahead: Opt for driving on smooth roads whenever possible. Rough roads with dirt or gravel rob you of up to 30 percent of your gas mileage! *** Penny Pinchers: Make sure your gas tank is nice and snug. If not, buy a new one. Why? Gas easily evaporates from the tank through loose caps. And don’t top off the gas tank. Johnston’s sister Joanne Mercier was also shot in the head during the ordeal. The Dudley Police responded to a call at the West Main St., apartment at approximately 12:45 a.m. that day. Upon arrival they found the three victims of the apparent shooting. According to police, Mercier told police as she was recovering at University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester that Muller was the one who had broken into the third floor of the apartment and shot the three occupants. According to Dudley Police Chief Steven Wojnar, Latang later turned himself into Webster Police, and when Muller was originally taken into custody he did not put up a struggle. During the trial, which began in early March of 2010, Muller entered the defense that he was insane when the crime occurred. He also claimed he had been fighting a drug addition during that period in time, therefore he was not in control of himself. According to authorities, at the time of the murders Muller had an extensive history of psychiatric issues, as well as an ongoing problem with substance abuse. WEBSTER — Commerce Insurance’s C.A.R.E.S in the Community program is reaching out to new drivers about safe driving practices as well as providing opportunities for vocational technical students to improve their auto body repair skills. A most recent effort of the C.A.R.E.S. in the Community program features the donation of a 2010 Toyota Camry to be repaired by Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School in Charlton. The vehicle was repaired by students at Bay Path in conjunction with Long Subaru in Webster. The repaired vehicle will be raffled and the proceeds from the raffle will benefit Bay Path. According to Jeremy Guay, assistant vocational director, the money raised will go toward funding new lighting for the school’s athletic field. Local businesses have been an integral part of the C.A.R.E.S. in the Community program. Long Subaru, has provided its facility and experienced technicians to assist in the structural repair process. This allows the students the educational experience to observe the repair process in an actual working environment. In addition to Long Subaru, Boch Collision Center of Norwood and Harr Auto Body in Worcester have generously contributed parts and labor to the C.A.R.E. S. in the Community program totaling nearly $22,000. Raffle tickets are on sale for $5 each or three for $10.
