Tunnelling work in progress at Washermenpet Station
Progress of Underground Highlights as on 31-12-12
1. 1 st TBM has completed 300m from
Nehru Park towards Egmore. 2 nd TBM has completed
85m drive.
2. Two TBMs launched from Washermenpet towards

CMRL celebrates 5 th Foundation Day
Chennai Metro Rail Limited celebrated its 5 th
Foundation day on 31-12-12.
CGM (PF) and CGM (C) addressed the gathering
.All CGMs, GMs and GC officials along with
other staff and officials of CMRL participated in
the celebrations. The Vote of Thanks was given by
Advisor (HR) of CMRL.

Track works in progress
Total Length of Track-plinth concreting done between
Vadapalani and Koyambedu station is 5350 Tr.mtr and from
Sidco to Vadapalani is 2650 Tr.mtr. A total of 8000 Tr.mtr track
laying has been completed.
World Aids Day Celebrated
L&T SUCG JV at Chennai Metro Underground Package observed
World Aids Day, on Dec – 1 st 2012, with series of activities comprise
taking of AIDS pledge by all staff and workmen. Guest lecture was
delivered by Dr.K.N.S.Varadhan (TNSACS) Tamil Nadu State Aids
Control Society. A programme was conducted at Workmen colony for
highlighting the modes of HIV/AIDS Transmission and Importance
on the usage of Condoms . Pamphlets, Condoms and Sweets were distributed
to all the employees and the program concluded with the
screening of short films on HIV/AIDS. The participation was very
good and feed back was encouraging.
Workshop on Design & Construction of Earthing, Bonding & Lightning Protection
System for Under Ground Stations & Tunnels .
A workshop on Design & Construction of Earthing, Bonding & Lightning Protection
System for Under Ground Stations & Tunnels was held at CMRL office on 13/12/12.
The workshop had a detailed discussion on how Earthing is done for Electrical and Lightning
protection in Underground Metro Rail Stations.
There was an interaction among the UG Mechanical, Electrical – Plumbing Division of CMRL
and Siemens Power on how techniques were adopted for the execution of Earthing , Bonding
& Lightning Protection system for the UG Metro Stations.
Several members from CMRL,GC and all Contractors of the Underground Packages participated
in this Workshop and shared their views in regard to the Earthing Systems in UG stations.
Several Topics were discussed during the Workshop viz.,
1. Interface point on Earthing system between Power Supply Contractor &
Underground Civil contractor.
2. Earthing System – Standards and References
3. Clean Earthing , Neutral Earthing
4. Lightning Protection System

Progress in manufacturing of train
Production activity of the first train is in the final phase with fitment of most of
the equipments on the 4 railcars after completion of electrical wiring, fixation of
panels and stage level tests. As per the test schedule given by Alstom, car level
tests will start in the first week of December 2012 followed by 4 car train level test
in January 2013 and February 2013. Accordingly, the car level tests have started by
the first week of December 2012 which was witnessed by the Engineers from GC
and CMRL stationed in Sao Polo, Brazil. The tests are progressing well. During the
three months period from December 2012 to February 2013, it is planned to conduct
thorough checks and all static type tests on the first train before clearance.
The quality of the first train will set the standard for manufacturing of all subsequent
rakes.
The first train will be packed and shipped to Chennai
on completion of static type tests subject to clearance
by CMRL/GC.
All the major equipments fitted into the train are
checked for quality separately prior to fitment at their
manufacturer’s place which is witnessed by CMRL/
GC officials. Accordingly, First Article Inspection and
type tests of most of them were completed in November
2012. Production of the second and third trains has started and is in
various stages of production. Equipments and panels are fitted on the car shell
which is expected to finish in another one month, which will be followed by car
level tests. Production of the third train has also started with sub-assemblies and
car body shell production was started in October-12 and is progressing Transfer
of Technology and Progress in in production of trains in India
Construction of Car Body shell at Alstom Factory in sricity - CBS shop is completed
and continuous production is planned to start by March 2013. Other
shops for train manufacturing, like fitting shop, bogie shop, and testing shop is
under construction, all of which will complete the construction by March 2013.
Regarding transfer of technology, the activities of new factory in Sri City are still progressing up to date. Specific
jigs dispatched from Alstom Brazil for carshell erection workstation arrived in Sri City. About training,
training for carbody shell sub-assembly workstations has been concluded and training for fitting activities has
been started.
INTERCONNECTION OF 700 MM WATER PIPELINE FOR METRO RAIL UG STATION
Interconnection of 700 mm dia water pipeline (transmitting water from Kilpauk
water works to Triplicane head works) were carried out for Central Metro
UG station. This is a special type of work involving welding joint at one end
and flange joint at the other end. This type of joint is being carried out for the
1 st time for CMRL diversion work. Normally this type of work takes 2 days.
Because of the availability of sophisticated equipments like hydra Crane,
CMRL was able to complete this work in 10 hrs.
