Kerry scoops Lifetime Achievement Award in Dementia care Kerry Fisher, organisational development manager was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Dementia Care at the UK Dementia Congress held in Bournemouth. The judges, who included clinical psychologist Dr Graham Stokes, said of Kerry, who lives in Nantwich: “From a strong field she demonstrated she had been immersed in dementia care and had achieved changes in her organisation that can contribute to the development of qualitative dementia care. She maintains a passion and enquiring mind necessary for the future development of dementia care.” Kerry has been involved in the development of Belong’s groundbreaking approach to dementia care which is benefiting residents at Belong Crewe. Kerry said later: “Never in my wildest dreams did I consider that I would win this award. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the moment and left the National Dementia Congress feeling quite a celebrity!” She added that she felt a sense of pride in belonging to an organisation that was becoming increasingly known and respected as one of the best in the sector. There is a culture within our organisation that is dedicated to achieving the optimum quality-of-life outcomes for people who should be ‘living’ rather than dying with dementia. Celebrating Excellence Belinda Jones, Kerry Fisher and Tracy Paine attended the ‘Celebrating Excellence’ event on Tuesday, 7th December 2010, held at Wychwood Park. The event was organised by Cheshire Learning Resource Network, to recognise achievement in social care. Everyone enjoyed a nice lunch and entertainment from comedian Laurence Clarke. Mayor of Cheshire East, Gordon Baxendale, presented certificates for the Great North West Awards to Operations Director, Tracy Paine, on behalf of Belong and Belinda Jones for North West Dementia Carer of the year. Councillor Neil Ritchie, from Cheshire West and Cheshire presented Kerry Fisher, Operational Development Manager, with her certificate for a Lifetime Achievement in Dementia Award. Belong Life March 2011 Welcome to Belong Crewe Melanie Saywell & Tracy Paine pictured with staff at Belong Crewe Belong Crewe, the £7.9 million village for older people, welcomed its first residents on Wednesday, December 1st. Pictured with some of the staff who are supporting residents to enjoy their life are Melanie Saywell, the village’s General Manager, and Tracy Paine, Operations Director. More than 100 people have already taken the opportunity to tour the village which provides modern familysized households for elderly people and specialist care support, including for people with dementia. Caroline Ray Hayley Nicholls Lee Edwards The village, in Brookhouse Drive, has a bistro, hair and beauty salon and community centre – facilities which are also open to the surrounding community. Although more than 30 residents have already moved in, either to a household or into one of the self-contained apartments, the village is still organising personal tours and welcoming new residents every day. Other members of the management team include Caroline Ray, Support Manager, Hayley Nicholls, Front of House Manager and Activity Facilitator, Lee Edwards. The village was officially opened on 28th January, by pop maestro Pete Waterman (see overleaf for details). 5
