• Entry Fees shall not be refunded in the event that a dog is absent, disqualified, excused by Veterinarian or
Judge, or barred from competition by action of the event’s Show Committee. If because of riots, wars, strikes,
civil disturbances, national emergencies, health emergencies, and the dictates of law enforcement or of the
owner(s) of the grounds and/or facilities or other acts beyond the control of the management it is impossible to
open or to complete the show, no refund of entry fee will be made. Extreme weather conditions, such as, but not
limited to snow storms, hurricanes, lightning, extreme heat, heavy rains, or other circumstances including but
such errors; no entry fee will be refunded in the event of such errors or cancellation of entries after the published closing date.
• Dogs may arrive any time prior to their scheduled time of judging. Dogs not required for further judging will be
excused. Judges will not wait for any dog holding up a class. Owners or agents alone are responsible for the
• All dogs present must be held on leash or confined to their crates except when being judged or when in the exercising pen.
• Class Monetary Prizes will be paid in the ring to the person showing the dog. Claims for prize money must be
MONDAY - SEPTEMBER 8
2012 aba triathlon
American Bullmastiff Association TRIATHALON RULES
Triathalon is an automatic entry & no fee will be assessed.
If a dog is entered in all three disciplines, they are eligible to compete in Triathalon.
The Triathalon will be comprised of competition in 3 areas:
1) Conformation; 2) Standard Agility; 3) Obedience or Rally
• Dogs must be entered in regular classes for Obedience or Rally & Standard Agility.
• Dogs will compete at the levels they are eligible for & additional points will be awarded for upper level classes.
• Teams participating in the Triathalon can choose to compete in either Rally or Obedience. However, scores
will be adjusted to allow for the significant difference in level of difficulty & skills required between Rally & Obedience.
For teams competing in both Rally & Obedience, the highest score earned will be counted. The better
of the 2 scores in Obedience & Rally will be the one used in the totalling overall Triathalon Score.
• The same team of dog & handler must complete all 3 phases of the competition, with no exceptions.
The handler must be a registered owner of the dog, or a member of the immediate family of a registered
owner of the dog. To be eligible to participate, dogs must compete in a regular Standard Agility class, a regular
Obedience class or a Rally class. Dogs will also compete in Triathalon Conformation. Placements will be
determined by the total points earned & calculated as follows:
CONFORMATION:
• Dogs will be judged according to the AKC standard, with the exception that spayed & neutered dogs may
compete in Triathalon conformation.
• A judge will be appointed by the National Show Committee with the approval of the ABA Board.
• A total of 100 possible conformation points may be awarded by the judge, with dogs to be scored & placed
according to points awarded.
• Any dog disqualified by the judge will receive no score.
OBEDIENCE:
• Novice: Score divided by 2*
• Open: Score + 20 divided by 2*
• Utility: Score + 40 divided by 2*
• For dogs competing in both Open & Utility, the highest score earned will be used. For dogs competing in both
Obedience & Rally, the better of the 2 scores will be the one used for the overall Triathalon score.
RALLY:
• Novice: Score multiply by .45
• Advanced: Score multiply by .55
• Excellent: Score multiply by .65
• For dogs competing in both Excellent & Advanced, the highest score earned will be used: for dogs competing
in both Obedience & Rally, the highest score will be used.
STANDARD AGILITY - REGULAR & PREFERRED JUMP HEIGHTS:
• Novice: Score
• Open: Score + 10
• Excellent: Score + 20
• Faults scored as follows: Failure (F) = 10 points; Refusals-run outs (R) = 5 points; Wrong course (W) = 5
points; Excusal (E) = No score (eliminating in ring, judge determines dog is out of control, leaving ring, course
not completed) Time faults = 1 pt per second.
• For dogs competing in both Regular & Preferred agility - the highest score will be used.
NOTES:
• For Rally & Agility, a maximum score of 100** is possible. Obedience has a maximum score of 200**, so the
score is divided by 2. (**Before Triathalon adjustments for levels).
• There is a significant difference in difficulty between Rally & Obedience competition. Rally competition does
not require the same skills as Obedience (i.e., in Rally, handlers may talk/encourage/praise dogs, give multiple
commands, retry exercises & complete only a short sit or down stay exercise on lead. In Obedience, dogs work
without multiple commands, encouragement/praise during exercises, exercises are not retried, dogs complete
American Bullmastiff Association National Specialty 2012 17

much longer sit & down stays off lead in a row of other dogs across the ring from their handlers.) So while a
choice is given to compete in Rally or Obedience for the Triathalon, scores must be adjusted to reflect the level
of difficulty of each.
TRIATHLON PRIZES:
All prizes are offered by the American Bullmastiff Association, Inc. through the generosity of its members & friends, unless
standing with the American Bullmastiff Association, Inc. (ABA). The owner and/or co-owner must also be members
in good standing with the ABA or be published applicants for membership in the ABA prior to the 6th month
birthday of the nominated puppy. Futurity entries must be handled by the owner, co-owner, a member of the owner
or co-owner’s family, the breeder or an amateur handler. If a handler is unable to physically handle their entry
in a class, a substitute handler of his/her choice will be allowed providing they are not defined as a professional
handler. A professional handler may handle a dog that they own, co-own & are breeder or co-breeder of record
provided they are also an ABA member in good standing. In the case of a breeder winning more than one class, a
substitute handler of his/her choice may be used providing they are not defined as a professional handler.
Breeders of Futurity nominated dogs are responsible for informing their owners on the correct entry
procedures for the Futurity competition. The Futurity Chair or Show Secretary will not be held responsible for
incorrectly entered Futurity dogs & will remain indifferent & impartial to any differences over winnings between
breeder and/or co-breeder & the owner.
A Futurity involves a series of nominations prior to the date on which the Futurity is judged. Bitches that
have been bred are first placed in nomination at a fee set by the ABA, prior to the whelping. After the puppies
are whelped, one or more of the litter may be nominated at 12 weeks & 6 months of age. At 12 weeks, puppies
can be nominated for 6 months & dropped from the Futurity, however puppies cannot be added at 6 months
if they had not been nominated at 12 weeks. The only dogs eligible for entry in a Futurity are those whose
nominations have been kept current in accord with the ABA Standing Rules for Futurity.
A litter can be nominated if it is whelped on or after March 1, 2011 & on or before February 28, 2012. The
litter must be nominated prior to the whelping of the litter. The nomination process is completed in accordance
with the ABA Futurity Standing Rules & must be completed by the breeder(s) of record or lessee of the bitch.
The breeder(s) or lessee must be a member in good standing of the ABA & stay in good standing throughout
the entire process up to the day of the event.
ABA National Specialty dates are subject to change. In the event that a litter is eligible for two national futurity
entries, the breeder of the litter must select which entry they would like to nominate the litter for. The litter
will only be eligible for one futurity entry at a National Specialty.
The Futurity class is considered a second entry in addition to a regular class for the National Specialty.
Under the “additional class” section of the entry form, enter “Futurity” along with the proper age category. A dog
may not be shown in a non-regular class without entry in a regular class. The entry fee for Futurity is paid from
futurity funds so no fee is required from the breeder/owner to the Show Secretary. Therefore, no entry fee for
Futurity is required.
CLASSIFICATION
The following classes will be provided for both dogs and bitches
• 6 mos. & Under 9 mos. • 9 mos. & Under 12 mos. • 12 mos. & Under 15 mos.
• 15 mos. & Under 18 mos. • 18 mos. & Older (when applicable)
The winners from these classes will then compete for Best Dog in Futurity & Best Bitch in Futurity
DIVISION OF ENTRY MONEY AS PRIZES
The Futurity funds will be split as follows: Forty-five percent (45%) will be divided equally among the (8)
eight first place winners in each age group. Twenty percent (20%) will be given to both the Best Bitch in Futurity
and Best Dog in Futurity. Fifteen percent (15%) will be retained by the ABA to cover reasonable Futurity
expenses including those incurred from Show Secretary and/or administrative fees. Given the unusual occasion
that the 15% holdback from the accumulated annual Futurity funds is not adequate to cover “reasonable
expenses” directly associated with the futurity, the Board may approve an additional amount to be withheld.
The additional amount would be withdrawn from the accumulated annual funds before the winnings allocations.
If there is no entry in a class, then those funds shall be allocated pro rata amongst the remaining classes and to
Best Dog in Futurity to Best Bitch in Futurity.
These funds will not be allocated to the ABA holdback. All winnings go to the breeder and/or co-breeder
of record.
A MESSAGE FROM
ART AUCTION COMMITTEE
CHAIR, LINDA CEJNER . . .
Ah…Summer. The birds are singing, gardens are in full bloom, the sun
is pleasant and warm . . . and you are tyring to decide what to do next
before fall quickly decends. (And it will!)
Spring cleaning is done and you have already washed your windows,
weeded the flower beds, refurbished the deck furniture. Well, take a
well-deserved break. Sit down, relax and ponder about all the Bullmastiff
STUFF you have been collecting over the years. All those items that you
dusted and re-positioned around the house (or wrapped and packed away)
during spring cleaning. Do you REALLY need to maintain and keep it all?
Wouldn’t you like to make room for all the other things you would like
to have but can’t because your Bullmastiff collection has overrun your
household? I have a solution for you . . .
DONATE it to the ABA National Art Auction!
If you are interested in sizing down and looking
to “share the wealth” with your fellow Bullmastiff
fanciers, please consider supporting this vital fundraiser
for the ABA. Thanks so much for your support, it is
most appreciated.
--- Please contact Linda Cejner at chaucerbm@aol.com
The Auction will
be held on Friday
evening this year,
right after the
NOTE
EARLY
CLOSING
DATE
2012 ABA Specialty Breed Judging
Judge: Mr. William Sahloff
CLASSIFICATION - REGULAR CLASSES (for both Dogs & Bitches)
• Puppy 6 months & under 9 months old • Puppy 9 months & under 12 months old
• Junior 12 months - 18 months old
• Amateur-Owner-Handler
• Bred by Exhibitor • American Bred • Open - Brindle • Open AOAC
• Best of Breed
NOTE: Amateur-Owner-Handler (AOH Class Eligibility): For dogs that are at least six (6) months of age that are not champions.
Dogs must be handled in the class by the registered owner of the dog, and this class is limited to exhibitors who have
not, at any point in time, been a professional dog handler, AKC approved conformation judge, or employed as an assistant to a
professional handler. (eff. 1-1-09)
NOTE: Bred By Exhibitor (BBE Class Eligibility): The Bred-by-Exhibitor Class shall be for dogs that are: Six (6) months of
age or older as of the first day of the show; not Champions of Record on the date of closing of entries for the show; individually
registered with the Americqan Kennel Club as of the date of closing of entries for the show; owned or co-owned by any of the
breeders of record as of the date of the closing of entries for the show. The person handling the dog in this class must be a
breeder of record or an owner of record of this dog. In any subsequent classes for which a dog from the Bred-by-Exhibitor
Class becomes eligible, there are no restrictions as to who may handle.
NOTE: Best of Breed: The following categories of dogs may be entered and shown in Best of Breed competition: Dogs that
are Champions of Record and dogs which according to their owner’s records have completed the requirements for a championship
but whose championships are unconfirmed. The entry and showing of dogs whose championships are unconfirmed is
limited to a period of 90 days from the date of the show where the dog completed the requirements for a championship according
to the owner’s records. If, at the end of the 90-day period, the championship of a dog has not been confirmed by AKC, no
further entries of the dog for Best of Breed competition are to be made until its championship has been confirmed by AKC.
NON-REGULAR CLASSES - SINGLE DOG ENTRIES - (classes for both Dogs and Bitches)
Veteran Classes: (Entry Fee $23)
• 6 years and under 8 years old • 8 years and under 10 years old • 10 years old and older
NOTE: AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows. Chapter 11. Section 8. Neutered dogs and spayed bitches are allowed to compete
in Veteran Classes only at independent specialties and/or those all-breed shows which do not offer any competitive classes
beyond Best of Breed. This is an independent specialty.
NON-REGULAR CLASSES - MULTIPLE DOG ENTRIES
Stud Dog Class: For Stud Dogs and two of their Get. Stud dogs must be entered in the Stud Dog Class and shown in
the ring with their Get. Owner of the Stud Dog need not necessarily be the owner of the Get. The Get must be entered
individually in one of the regular classes, Best of Breed, or some non-regular class other than Stud Dog. Judging will be
based on merits of the Get.
NOTE: The Stud Dog may be entered separately in one of the Regular or Non-Regular classes at the first entry fee of $28, with
‘Stud Dog’ class indicated on the entry form in the space for ‘Additional Class’ at an additional $23, OR, the Stud Dog may be
entered in Stud Dog class only for a $23 non-regular entry fee.
Brood Bitch Class: Same as Stud Dog Class except substitute Brood Bitch for Stud Dog and Produce for Get.
NOTE: *Chapter 11, Section 8 of the “Rules Applying to Dog Shows” provides that a neutered male may be entered as a Stud
Dog in the Stud Dog Class and a spayed Bitch may be entered as a Bood Bitch in the Brood Bitch Class.
As the Judge’s decision in the Stud Dog, Brood Bitch and Brace Classes will be based on the merits of more than one dog
or bitch, no one of the dogs or bitches making up the entry judged first in these classes will be eligible to compete for Best of
Breed by virtue of having won these classes.
Brace Class: Each Brace shall be composed of two Bullmastiffs, irrespective of sex, owned by an identical owner.
Entry fee is $23 for the unit. If the dog that is part of the Brace is not entered in another Class, it must be entered
for “Brace Class Only”. For a dog for which this is an additional class, indicate Brace in the “Additional Entry”
portion of the entry form. If more than one Brace is entered by identical owner, the dog comprising each Brace Unit
must be designated “Brace#1”, “Brace#2, Etc.
NOTE: (eff. 1-1-05) A brace is defined by AKC as two dogs of the same recognized breed or variety that are similar in
appearance, performing in unison, and presented by a maximum of two handlers. Both dogs competing in brace competition
must have at least one common owner.
