com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to appearance. To underst<strong>and</strong> what (<strong>or</strong> who) expresses itself <strong>in</strong> the embryonic<br />

ph<strong>as</strong>e, it is necessary to consider the growth gestures <strong>and</strong> Gestalt of an embryo <strong>as</strong> serious<br />

(human) behavi<strong>or</strong> <strong>and</strong> to describe them <strong>as</strong> such. This might teach us someth<strong>in</strong>g about a<br />

human Be<strong>in</strong>g. A phenomenological embryological approach is the method to <strong>in</strong>vestigate<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g like the ‘act of <strong>in</strong>carnation’. To develop the contours of such an approach is the<br />

challeng<strong>in</strong>g aim of the lecture / sem<strong>in</strong>ar at stake.<br />

About the <strong>in</strong>struct<strong>or</strong><br />

Jaap van der Wal PhD (* 1947) is a medical doct<strong>or</strong> <strong>and</strong> currently w<strong>or</strong>ks <strong>as</strong> seni<strong>or</strong> teacher <strong>in</strong><br />

Anatomy <strong>and</strong> <strong>Embryo</strong>logy at the University of Ma<strong>as</strong>tricht, Holl<strong>and</strong>. After his medical<br />

education <strong>in</strong> 1973 he became specialized <strong>in</strong> the functional anatomy <strong>and</strong> development of the<br />

locomot<strong>or</strong> apparatus <strong>in</strong> particular regard<strong>in</strong>g proprioception (i.e., the sense f<strong>or</strong> the perception<br />

of locomotion <strong>and</strong> body position). Gradually he developed <strong>as</strong> teacher <strong>in</strong> Philosophy of<br />

Science <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Medical Anthropology.<br />

“My p<strong>as</strong>sion however w<strong>as</strong> <strong>and</strong> still is human embryology. The human body is a process,<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> function<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> time. The embryo moves <strong>and</strong> behaves <strong>in</strong> f<strong>or</strong>ms. It is <strong>in</strong> this<br />

area that I encountered the anthroposophy <strong>and</strong> the Goethean phenomenological approach.<br />

This appeared to be the key f<strong>or</strong> bridg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>between</strong> the doma<strong>in</strong> of "natural science" <strong>and</strong><br />

"spiritual science"– <strong>or</strong> even religion. I apply the method of dynamic m<strong>or</strong>phology to<br />

underst<strong>and</strong> what we actually are do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>gs when we still are embryo. By this<br />

approach I discovered that f<strong>or</strong> me science <strong>and</strong> religion, matter <strong>and</strong> spirit, macrocosm <strong>and</strong><br />

microcosm, creation <strong>and</strong> evolution meet each other <strong>in</strong> the phenomenal process of becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

human. With respect I can f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> the embryo cautious answers to questions <strong>as</strong> to the<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g of human existence."<br />

He now travels all over the w<strong>or</strong>ld present<strong>in</strong>g his ‘embryo of imag<strong>in</strong>ation’ to all k<strong>in</strong>d of<br />

professionals <strong>and</strong> laymen who have an open m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> ear f<strong>or</strong> the human be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>as</strong> a be<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

spirit <strong>and</strong> body. Among the target groups that <strong>in</strong>vited him <strong>in</strong> the p<strong>as</strong>t twenty years are<br />

anthroposophists, osteopaths, craniosacral therapists, trauma therapists, body-psychotherapists,<br />

somatic experience tra<strong>in</strong>ers, systemic constellation w<strong>or</strong>kers, eurythmists,<br />

physiotherapists, medical doct<strong>or</strong>s <strong>and</strong> so may m<strong>or</strong>e<br />

About the sem<strong>in</strong>ar<br />

This sem<strong>in</strong>ar will expl<strong>or</strong>e human prenatal development <strong>and</strong> show how biology is express<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the essence of human spiritual development <strong>or</strong> ‘unfoldment’. Underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g the stages of<br />

development is a foundation f<strong>or</strong> therapeutic recognition of embryological f<strong>or</strong>ces <strong>in</strong> all later<br />

stages of life. Craniosacral Therapists have been urged to comprehend embryological f<strong>or</strong>ces<br />

at w<strong>or</strong>k <strong>in</strong> sessions because the f<strong>or</strong>ces that f<strong>or</strong>med the body are cont<strong>in</strong>uously at w<strong>or</strong>k<br />

throughout life, carry<strong>in</strong>g the bluepr<strong>in</strong>t of Health <strong>in</strong>to manifestation at every moment.<br />

This sem<strong>in</strong>ar is a rare opp<strong>or</strong>tunity to hear a w<strong>or</strong>ld auth<strong>or</strong>ity on modern scientific<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of embryology who h<strong>as</strong> developed a unique synthesis of this science with<br />

spiritual pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. The human body gets its shape <strong>and</strong> f<strong>or</strong>m dur<strong>in</strong>g the embryonic<br />

development <strong>in</strong> a cont<strong>in</strong>uous process of change <strong>and</strong> metam<strong>or</strong>phosis. Us<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

phenomenological method of observation it is possible to underst<strong>and</strong> those gestures <strong>as</strong><br />

human behavi<strong>or</strong>. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the early ph<strong>as</strong>es of human existence the processes that accompany<br />

the act of <strong>in</strong>carnation may be “read” from the biological facts. Those gestures also are a k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of echo <strong>or</strong> recapitulation of the gestures of development of man <strong>as</strong> a species. In this way of<br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g a human <strong>and</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g human, biography <strong>and</strong> biology meet. The embryo may<br />

help us to learn the real <strong>and</strong> essential patterns of human development.
