A14 • Friday, September 03, 2010 PUTNAM VILLAGER Villager thanks its readers for five years of readership VILLAGER continued from page A1 Putnam Price Chopper construction, the Putnam Wal-Mart PS3 shooting, the unfortunate death of Judy Nilan, the use of outdoor wood burning furnaces, and the Putnam Regional YMCA project — all of these topics and more — the Villager has been at the forefront of local media coverage, bringing your news to you every week. “It is important to me that we get to share with our readers all aspects of life here in Northeast Connecticut,” said Matt Sanderson, who has been with the Villager Newspapers since May 2008. “Not only when news breaks, we’re there to cover it, but we also take the time to speak with members of our community individually and find the news our readers want.” During this landmark anniversary, it may be interesting to see how we got here. Stonebridge Press President and Publisher Frank G. Chilinski explained the papers were launched after the company had gotten calls from Connecticut readers interested in having a paper similar to our papers in the Central Massachusetts. Stonebridge Press, the parent company of the Villager, runs six weekly newspapers out of its office in Southbridge, Mass., including the Webster Times, Auburn News, Spencer New Leader, Charlton Villager, Sturbridge Villager, and Blackstone Valley Tribune, as well as the company’s flagship daily newspaper, the Southbridge Evening News. “We had often gotten calls from people in Northeast Connecticut asking us to consider starting a newspaper here,” Chilinski said. “There wasn’t a good source of news in the area so people had no place to go for local news.” Chilinski said Stonebridge Press did a year of market research and asked people what they wanted in a paper. What readers and advertisers alike wanted, he said, was what Stonebridge Press tries to do with all of its papers. “They wanted news that was hyper local, and that is what we like to do,” Chilinski said. “Our mission is to reflect each community as best we can. No local news is too small, in fact, the smaller the better. We want to cover everything from the Cub Scouts bake sales to meetings at Town Hall.” Even after knowing what our potential readers wanted, however, there was still a lot of work to do to launch a new set of papers. David Dore, the original editor of the Putnam Villager when it launched in 2005, and who is now the editor of the Spencer New Leader, said introducing the paper to the community was an interesting experience. “That was the first time I went through something like that, building a newspaper from the ground up,” Dore said. “Starting a newspaper is always an interesting thing, especially in our case — nobody in Eastern Connecticut knew what to expect. There was a lot of preparation and work that went into it.” Dore said that before the first edition, editors spent weeks going to public meetings to get the lay of the land, meeting with town officials, and talking with members of the community. It was hard work, he said, but it paid off after the first papers were released. “When we got the first edition, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, we finally did it, people have something in their hands,’” he said. “And I couldn’t believe the response. It was overwhelmingly positive — people were thrilled to see an actual newspaper come to the area. There were things we reported that nobody else was dealing with.” The response has remained strong. To date, the Villager is delivered to around 80 percent of all homes in the coverage area. Current Villager Editor Adam Minor, who was a reporter for the Putnam Villager and Thompson Villager from November 2005 to June 2007, and recently returned as editor in August, said he is confident the paper will continue to grow and continue to keep and attract readers. The secret, he said, is to be consistent in the mission of local news. Much can change, but that cannot. Since the beginning we have changed editors multiple times, and have had reporters come and go. We have also featured a variety of columnists. However, the Villager has always been committed to cover the news our readers want, the stories of their town. “The Villager has always been focused on local news,” Minor said. “When I was a writer here, you got that community feel wherever you went. That has always been a consistent element in the papers.” Looking ahead, Minor said he feels confident in the papers. “I think our outlook is good,” he said. “I think we have a great editorial staff and a great advertising staff. As long as we focus on being as local as possible, we’ll be just fine.” Another strength that bolsters the Villager Newspapers, Minor said, is the contributions of our readers. Our guest editorialists, those who pen letters to the editor and those who send in their “Sound Offs” help make this a true local paper. “Being back for about two weeks now as editor,” Minor said, “I am reminded of how people like to have their voices heard in our paper,” Minor said. “We have great local column writers and letter writers, offering a great variety of opinions.
