A4 • Friday, September 03, 2010 PUTNAM VILLAGER QUIET CORNER ROUND-UP ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ at Bradley Sept. 3 PUTNAM — The Theatre of Northeastern Connecticut at the Bradley Playhouse is proud to present the “Off-Bradley” production of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize winning play “Glengarry Glen Ross.” Performances are Friday, Sept. 3 and Saturday, Sept. 4, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. All tickets are $10. This production is not part of the regular Bradley season, so season and flex passes cannot be used. The play contains strong language and is suitable for mature audiences. “Off-Bradley” productions generally happen when a group of actors decide they would like to do a show that’s different than the main season offerings. The plays may be a bit controversial or more adult in content. They make you think. Often the roles are challenging for the actors and help them grow in their craft — a reason why they generally attract our best actors. In addition, these performances help raise money for the Bradley, something the theatre needs in these tough economic times. “Glengarry Glen Ross,” a look at wheeling and dealing in the real estate business, is a depiction of men whose lives and values are twisted by a world in which they must lie, cheat and even steal in order to survive. Some critics have said that for all its use of “four letter words” (which is somewhat of a Mamet trademark), “Glengarry Glen Ross” is actually a morality play. David Mamet was born in PUTNAM — Putnam Bank was the Starting Line sponsor of this year’s Day Kimball Healthcare Deary Memorial Road Race on Aug. 14. As a major sponsor, Putnam Bank contributed $5,000 to support this worthy local cause. Through the generosity of Putnam Bank’s participating team and employees, another $1,400 in addition to the bank’s sponsorship was given, making Putnam Bank the second highest corporate contributor this year. 1947 and discovered his passion for theater in college. He trained as an actor, than worked at several unglamorous jobs, including one as office manager at a real estate office. He later taught acting at Marlboro College and Goddard College in Vermont and turned to playwriting. “American Buffalo” opened on Broadway in 1977 and “Glengarry Glen Ross” in 1984 when it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2005, “Glengarry Glen Ross” returned to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Revival. Liev Schreiber got the Tony for Best Featured Actor, in a cast that included Alan Alda and Jeffrey Tambor. In 1992, “Glengarry Glen Ross” was made into a movie that starred Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris and Alan Arkin. Real Carpentier, Derek Broszeit. Putnam Bank supports Deary Road Race The Deary Memorial Road Race & Walk began in 1990 and over the past 20 years has become a hallmark community event. Since it first began, the race has raised more than $900,000 to provide preventive services and cancer treatment such as mammograms, ultrasounds, medications, travel and surgical procedures for people in the local community needing financial assistance. Through this year’s event, nearly $90,000 was raised to assist local people in need. The fundraiser also supports The Tom C. Deary Jr. Hospital dedicates lounge in memory of influential physician PUTNAM — Day Kimball Hospital recently dedicated the medical staff lounge to the memory of Dr. Moses Margolick, renovating the entire lounge with funds donated to the organization in his name. Mrs. Gertrude Margolick, her three sons, daughter-in-law and grandson all attended the dedication. In an impromptu speech, Mrs. Margolick thanked the crowd by adding, “This day is like a homecoming for us. We are so thrilled to see our friends, many of whom traveled far to be here, and we’re honored that my husband is being remembered in such a meaningful way.” “Dr. Margolick’s family had expressed a wish to our development office that the Margolick Memorial Fund be used for a permanent tribute to the doctor who cared deeply for Day Kimball and the physicians he worked with,” said Pamela Watts, interim director of development. “A hospital committee suggested a muchneeded refurbishing of the medical staff lounge, so that’s what we did.” The space offers the medical staff a place to relax and to do research. Appropriately, the modernized lounge is located across the hall from the Medical Library, founded by Dr. Margolick, but named at his request for his colleague, Dr. Leo LaPalme, who had died in a car accident. During that time he also served as president of the Medical Staff. Dr. Margolick and his wife Gert were active in civic affairs and created lively variety shows and travelogues to raise funds for Day Kimball before his retirement in 1986. Following his death last year at the age of 98, gifts totaling almost $10,000 were given to the memorial fund in his name. PUTNAM VILLAGER Is coupon clipping worth it? Friday, September 03, 2010 WHAT IS IT? • A5 Is coupon clipping worth it? You can probably guess my answer to this question — of course it is! Then again, I’m biased, as I think everyone should use coupons in some way. By clipping coupons I’m able to save hundreds of dollars each month on grocery and drugstore items, savings I can apply to other areas of my budget like vacations, college funds, etc. While I do see lots of people out at the stores using coupons, it still surprises me to see so many more who are not. Why? Let’s take a look at some common objections to coupon clipping and debunk some myths about the value of clipping coupons. • Clipping coupons takes time — You bet it takes time, but it is time well spent. If it takes me an hour to clip coupons to save $40 off my weekly grocery bill, I consider that $40 earned. Where else can I earn $40 per hour, tax free, sitting on my sofa clipping coupons? Plus, it really doesn’t have to take that much time. You can clip coupons while watching television or relaxing outside. Get those kids involved, too! • Most coupons are for things you neither need nor want — Clipping coupons for things you don’t want or need is indeed a big waste of time. Who knows, you may discover a new product you love! • Coupons tempt you to spend more money on things you shouldn’t — I don’t know about you, but I’m tempted to spend money I shouldn’t every day! That’s why I stay disciplined and have a budget. A budget is the single best way to help ensure you do not overspend. At the end of the month (or year) it’s not about what you saved, it’s about what your spent. Find a monthly budget that works for you and stick to it. • Shopping takes longer — Shopping can take longer, but it doesn’t have to. I contend that putting together a weekly menu plan and shopping around that plan can actually save you time shopping. Unplanned shopping trips always take more time, and let’s not forget the added stress of running into the store having little idea what you need to buy! Plus, you just know that unplanned trip to the store is going to cost you more money. Funny, the most common objection to using coupons I hear is that your coupons have been left at home, in the car or simply forgotten somewhere! Yes, even the dog ate them along with the kids’ homework. This is why you need a good coupon organization system that you can easily take with you to the store. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to work for you. So get out those coupons and scissors, sit back and relax with a good television show and start saving more money!
