Power company informs customers of rebate scam
SCAM
continued from page A7
number over the phone — that information
already appears on the representative’s screen
by the time he or she is connected to the customer.
According to Gross, the Manchester customer
only became suspicious after the person
on the other end of the phone line asked
for a Social Security number.
Along with account numbers, bona fide
CL&P customer service representatives do not
request social security numbers, especially
during routine service calls.
Upon notification that someone had been
impersonating a CL&P employee to obtain
sensitive information, a press release was
issued warning customers to “be wary of
phone calls from people claiming to be from
CL&P, offering a ‘$40 rebate,’ and then requesting
that customer’s CL&P account number
and Social Security number.” The warning
was posted to the service provider’s official
Facebook page and Twitter account as well.
Gross said there was an immediate response
from customers expressing concern not only
about similar phone calls, but of people coming
to their doors offering discounts on their
electricity bill.
Gross said that while the phone call “discounts”
are definitely fraudulent, it is possible
that a knock on your door could be that of a
third party supplier, though he confirmed that
CL&P employees do not solicit door to door —
nor do they “call customers up and offer $40
rebates.”
While CL&P has not asked for the help of
State Police regarding the scam, Gross urged
customers who are suspicious of an unsolicited
caller requesting sensitive information to
hang up the phone and call your local police.
Customers can always call Customer
Service at 860-286-2000 if they are unsure of, or
doubt the authenticity of a caller or visit from
a person who claims to be an agent of CL&P, to
verify the contact.
CL&P officials believe the scam was
inspired by the storm fund credit of $140.22
that 192,000 customers received in their
February bills, following the widespread
power outages due to the October nor’easter,
that left in its wake a blanket of heavy snow
and hundreds of thousands of Connecticut
residents in the dark.
According to Gross, 225,000 customers were
eligible to receive the credit, and while many
opted in, around four thousand declined the
credit.
As for the “$40 credit” being offered out of
the blue — this time it’s too good to be true,
and could come at the high price of having
your identity stolen.
each week,” Willett said of her new
role, “one that people feel they can
connect with and are excited to read.
I am looking forward to establishing
myself in the community as a trusted
news source, and will strive hard
to cover stories and provide meaningful
information that is compelling
to the readers.”
“Along with continuing to work
forward to getting to know the people
and organizations in the community
that I haven’t met yet, because
I’ve been around for a little while
now, I know a lot of the people who
make our community what it is —
but I haven’t met all of you yet, and
I’m determined to do my best to
“Once the weather is warm it is
not uncommon to see me cruising
around town on my long board
skateboard, bicycle, or just walking
around and enjoying the fresh air,”
she said. “I love travel, reading, listening
Konesni, also a lover of music,
said she sings and plays instruments,
“Being a musician around other
musicians — the number of musicians
in this region is fantastically
healthy — keeps your heart happy
