2012 Range Rover Evoque a Right Sized
Vehicle that Breaks the Brand's Trend
The 2012 Range Rover Evoque is a dynamic, fun-to-drive crossover that keeps the off-road capabilities that Range Rover is so famous for.

Until recently, the only good Range
Rover was one being driven on an offroad
course. I've been fortunate to drive
some on excellent off-road terrain in
North Carolina, Canada and New York.
They are magnificent beasts once they
leave the pavement.
On road, though, has always been a different
story for me. I've always found
Range Rovers to be unwieldy to drive and
fairly cramped inside in spite of what is
a large vehicle.
But then comes along the 2012 Range
Rover Evoque – recently named the
North American Truck of the Year.
Granted, it was a decidedly weak year
with all seven eligible trucks being
named finalists but this Evoque could
have won in a difficult year of competition.
It is the right-sized Range Rover
that is going to finally make the company
mainstream.
Can you sense just a little bit of enthusiasm
on my part for the Evoque? Can't
help it. I was sorry to see it leave my driveway,
even though a Porsche Cayenne S
hybrid was its replacement. I've never
favored a Range Rover over a Porsche
until now.
One of the best things about the
Evoque is its engine: a 2.0-liter, turbocharged
four-cylinder. Good things do
come in small packages. It delivers 240
horsepower and hits 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds.
This is just a quick crossover that
will get you in trouble if you're inattentive
to the speedometer. Fortunately the
traffic gods were smiling on me for the
week I was behind the wheel.
Of course, fast vehicles need good traction
and the Evoque doesn't disappoint.
Methinks it would be awfully difficult to
get this Evoque to break loose and lose
control with traction and stability systems
including: dynamic stability control;
roll stability control; traction control
system; trailer stability assist; hill
start assist; hill descent control and gradient
release control; and engine drag
torque control.
The Evoque, like other Range Rovers,
also has the ability to respond to a variety
of terrains. Terrain Response adapts
the responses of the car’s engine, gearbox,
center coupling and braking/stability
systems to match the demands of the
terrain, optimizing drivability and comfort
as well as maximizing traction. The
Range Rover Evoque has four Terrain
Response settings, selected via a control
on the center console: General Driving
(on-road and easy off-road); grass/gravel/snow
(slippery conditions, on- and offroad);
mud and ruts; and Sand. An additional
dynamic setting is available for
cars specified with adaptive dynamics.
The Evoque is chock full of technology,
including an eight-inch touch-screen display
and a 360 degree Surround Camera
System. The latter is important when
going offroad to check clearances but it
also helps when you're trying to park.
Flip the switch and you know if you're
inside the lines. I've found it immensely
helpful on various vehicles I have driven
with it, including one time trying to
squeeze down a Philadelphia street in an
Infiniti QX56 amidst double-parked cars.
The model loaned to me for review by
Range Rover was the four-door Evoque.
There is a coupe available but anybody
with a family is going to want the fourdoor
model. I can't imagine trying to
wrestle kids into the backseat. The coupe
and five-door are identical in overall
length and width; however, the five-door
has a 1.18-inch higher rear roofline.
You know what really sold me on this
vehicle? The full glass fixed panoramic
roof and I don't like sunroofs. This one,
which comes with a sliding three-part
cover, opens up a wide vista that makes
the Evoque feel that much airier.
Another selling point for me was the
fuel economy. I could never before write
the words "fuel economy" in a Range
Rover but the Evoque, dare I say it,
achieves a respectable 28-mpg highway
and 18-mpg city according to EPA standards.
I know it has a smaller engine and
is smaller than the rest of the Range
Rover lineup, but the Evoque's 22-mpg
combined fuel economy just decimates
the others in the lineup that average 14-
mpg – a more than 50 percent difference.
So what is my love going to cost me?
Um, more than I would probably pay for
a vehicle. The starting price is $43,995 but
heads quickly up from there. The model I
reviewed thanks to a host of options cost
$58,645. Well, true love does have its
price.
