The History So Far......
It all started in 1968 when John Craddock purchased a 1948 Series One Land Rover for £50 and like so many
other enthusiasts he was smitten by the charisma of the vehicle: its simplicity, reliability and ability to cover
any terrain in four wheel drive. In the late 60’s and 70’s Land Rover rallying became a popular pastime for
John, who spent many weekends away with the Land Rover clubs.
Back in the day parts for the older Land Rovers were
becoming scarce and the only way to get hold of them, dare
we say it, was to dismantle the older ones for spares.
Fellow enthusiasts were soon purchasing parts from John,
until it became impossible for him to continue supplying
parts in his spare time.
John Craddock Limited became an entity in 1970. However
when your passion becomes your business you source
new old stock items to ensure the vehicle you love is able
to spend many more years surviving and this was true for
John Craddock and John Craddock Ltd who now supply
parts to virtually every country in the world through our
extensive Mail Order business. We supply parts and
accessories for all Land Rover Models from 1948 to
Present date.
Behind the company is a committed team of experts in
Land Rover parts and 4 x 4 wheels and tyres, whose sole
aim is to give you a first class service.
At the premises in Cannock we have an extensively stocked
shop where many of the parts, wheels and tyres are on
show. Behind the shop is a dedicated tyre bay, where we
can supply and fit our vast selection of wheels and tyres for
a wide range of off road vehicles.
We sell second hand Land Rover vehicles which are sold
through the workshop and vehicle sales section which
surround the main building.
Our Service Centre can service your vehicle and our fitting
bay can fit accessories to any model of Land Rover. To aid
diagnosis and provide power upgrades our experienced
mechanics use “Autologic for Land Rover” which enables
us to give a comprehensive and efficient service all at
reasonable rates.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Series 1
The Land Rover was conceived by the Rover Company in 1947 during the aftermath of World War II. Rover’s chief
designer, Maurice Wilks came up with a plan to produce a light agricultural and utility vehicle, of a similar concept
to the Willys Jeep used in the war, but with an emphasis on agricultural use. The first prototype had a distinctive
feature, the steering wheel was mounted in the middle of the vehicle. It became known as the “centre steer”. The
bodywork was handmade out of an aluminium/magnesium alloy called Birmabright, to save on steel, which was
closely rationed. Paint was also in short supply, resulting in the first production vehicles making use of army surplus
green paint. Tests showed this prototype vehicle to be a capable and versatile machine. The steering wheel was
then mounted off to the side as normal, the bodywork was simplified to reduce production time and costs and a
larger engine was fitted. The Land Rover was designed to only be in production for 2-3 years to gain some cash
flow and export orders for the Rover Company so it could restart up-market car production. Once car production
restarted, however, it was greatly outsold by the off-road Land Rover, which developed into its own brand that
remains successful today.
Series Vehicles
The successor to the successful Series I was the Series II, which saw a production run from 1958 to 1961.
It came in 88”and 109” wheelbases (normally referred to as the SWB and LWB). This was the first Land
Rover to receive the attention of Rover's styling department. The 109” Series II Station Wagon introduced a
12-seater option on top of the standard 10-seater layout. This was primarily to take advantage of UK tax laws.
The SII and the SIIA are very difficult to distinguish. There were some minor cosmetic changes, but the most
significant change was under the bonnet in the guise of the new 2.25-litre diesel engine. The Series IIA is
considered by many the most hardy Series model constructed. It is also the type of classic Land Rover that
features strongly in the general public’s perception of the Land Rover, from its many appearances in popular
films and television documentaries set in Africa throughout the 1960s, such as Born Free.
Series 2 & 3
& Airportable
The Series III had the same body and engine options as the preceding IIA, including station wagons and the
1 ton versions. Little changed cosmetically from the IIA to the Series III. The Series III is the most common
Series vehicle, with 440,000 of the type built from 1971 to 1985. Also, new trim options were introduced to
make the interior more comfortable if the buyer so wished. By the late 1970s, the British Army had acquired
around 9,000 Series III models, which were mainly a special ‘Heavy Duty’ version of the 109” Soft Top. These
models had improved suspension components and a different chassis cross-member design. These were
produced in 12-volt ‘GS’ models and 24-volt ‘FFR’ versions. A small number were 88” GS and FFR models,
but in general the Army used the Air-Portable 1/2 ton, 88” Lightweight version. The Lightweight was in service
by many armies all over the world.
Series 2 & 3
& 90/110
The model was introduced in 1983 as the Ninety and the One Ten, with the numbers representing the wheelbase
in inches. The number was spelled in full in advertising and in handbooks and manuals, and the vehicles
also carried badges above the radiator grille which read “Land Rover 90” or “Land Rover 110”, with the number
rendered numerically. The Ninety and One Ten replaced the earlier Land Rover Series, and at the time of
launch, the only other Land Rover model in production was the Range Rover. From 1991 the Ninety and the
One Ten were renamed the Defender 90 and Defender 110. While the engine and other body panels carried
over from the Series III, mechanically the 90 and 110 were modernized, including: Coil springs, offering a
more comfortable ride and improved axle articulation, a permanent four-wheel-drive system derived from the
Range Rover, featuring a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable centre differential, a modernised interior,
a taller one-piece windscreen and a new series of progressively more powerful and more modern engines.
The Range Rover Classic was a 4x4 luxury vehicle built by Land Rover from 1970-1996. It was the first generation
of vehicles produced under the Range Rover name. The final design, launched in 1970 was marketed
as “A Car For All Reasons”. In its original guise, the Range Rover was more capable off-road than the Land
Rover but was much more comfortable, offering a top speed in excess of 100 mph, a towing capacity of 3.5
tons, spacious seating area for five people and groundbreaking features such as a four-speed, dual-range,
permanent four-wheel-drive gearbox and hydraulic disc brakes on all wheels. The Range Rover broke from
the Land Rovers of its time by using coil springs instead of the then-common leaf springs. Because of its
hefty weight, it also had disc brakes on all four wheels. Originally, it had no power steering, though this was
added a few years after its introduction.
