General Conditions & Regulations 

SHB(GB) RULES AS PRINTED IN THE 

SHOW REGULATIONS APPLY TO ALL CLASSES 

INTRODUCTION 

The Council of the Society has wide-ranging powers to discipline members 

and competitors. In shows run by or affiliated to the Society in the event 

of failure to observe any provisions of the Rules and any other 

regulations, or bye-laws made by the Council. Every member of the 

Society, by becoming a member, agrees to be bound by the Memorandum 

and Articles of Association of the Society and all rules, regulations and 

bye-laws made thereunder. Members are responsible for the actions of 

any non-members employed by them or assisting or representing them or 

otherwise acting on their behalf and any action or conduct of such nonmember 

which would be a breach of the Rules were he/she a member 

shall constitute a breach of the Rules by the Member responsible for 

him/her. All horses exhibited in Hunter & Sport Horse classes run in 

accordance with these Rules must be duly registered with the Society 

unless these rules state otherwise. Owners, Riders and Producers of horses 

competing in specified Hunter classes run in accordance with these Rules 

must be Members of the Society. Owners/riders/exhibitors who compete 

unregistered horses will be disqualified. Members of the Society, whether 

acting as officials or Judges of the Society or otherwise, must not act in 

any way derogatory to the character and reputation of the Society or 

prejudicial to the interests of the Society. 

LIABILITY 

The Society, its officials and judges: 

• accept no liability in respect of damage to a horse or its exhibitor or 

other persons responsible for it (save as provided by s.2(1) Unfair 

Contract Terms Act (UCTA) 1977) at or en route to a show or other 

event held by the Society. 

• accept no liability in respect of damage arising from a horse (save as 

provided by s.2(1) UCTA 1977) at or en route to a show or other event 

held by the Society. 

• accept no liability for financial loss for its or their decisions at or in 

respect of a show or other event held by the Society. 

Owners and those otherwise responsible for horses must ensure that they 

and those in any way involved with their horses at any show or other 

events held by the Society: 

• are aware of these General Rules and, in particular, the Society’s 

exclusion of liability above. 

• have adequate third party insurance cover. 

• save as provided for above, participate at their own risk. 

DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE 

In accordance with Article 6.4 of the Society’s Memorandum & Articles of 

Association 

The Disciplinary Committee shall be appointed by the Council of the 

Society and shall comprise such persons as the Council shall decide but so 

that at least three members of the Disciplinary Committee shall sit on any 

hearing. The Disciplinary Committee may consider whether a Member has 

breached the Rules either of its own motion or, in accordance with rule 

5.3, on a breach of the Rules being brought to the attention of the 

Society. Any alleged breach of these Rules must be brought to the 

attention of the Society within 21 days when the alleged breach will be 

referred to the Disciplinary Committee. A reference by any person other 

than an official of, or appointed by, the Society or a representative of an 

affiliated Show shall be accompanied by a deposit of £100 or such sum as 

the Council shall decide, which will be forfeited if the reference should be

considered by the Disciplinary Committee to be frivolous. The Disciplinary 

Committee shall determine whether there has been a breach of these 

Rules by a method of enquiry at its discretion. If in its opinion there has 

been such a breach it will decide to take no further action or to impose 

such penalties as it thinks fit including financial penalties and suspension 

of membership, or to recommend to the Council that it determines to 

remove membership from the Member in accordance with Article 1.5.4 of 

the Society’s Articles of Association. The decision of the Disciplinary 

Committee will be confirmed in writing to any person who has referred 

the matter to the Society and to the Member to whom the decision 

relates. The Disciplinary Committee may in its absolute discretion order 

the person against whom an allegation has been made, or the person 

making an allegation, to pay all or part of the costs incurred by the 

Society in investigating and determining whether or not there has been a 

breach of the Rules. When investigating allegations and/or findings of 

doping, the Disciplinary Committee will conduct its proceedings in 

accordance with the rule 25 (Doping & Dope Tests, Penalties as per pages 

26 – 28 inclusive of the 2013 Handbook). 

DOPING AND DOPE TESTS 

The presence in any form or quantity, in a horse being shown, of a 

substance which could, by its nature, affect its performance, is forbidden. 

Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain may cause tests to be carried out at 

this show on a random basis. The specific rules with regard to doping and 

dope tests are as per pages 26-28 inclusive of the 2013 Handbook and any 

breach thereof constitutes a breach of the General Rules. Copies available 

from the Secretary. 

OWNERSHIP 

The person in whose name the horse is entered will be held responsible for 

abiding by the General Rules and Regulations of the Show concerned and 

indemnifying it against any claims for damages, etc., which may arise. 

Horses registered with Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain or any other 

Authority must be shown with their registered name, age and description. 

A change of name is not allowed. Anyone concealing a previously 

registered name will be disqualified. If a Horse changes ownership after 

the closing date of entries, it can be exhibited in the name of the new 

owner provided it is re-registered with Sport Horse Breeding of Great 

Britain before the catalogue is printed. The person signing the registration 

form is taken to be the rightful owner of the horse or the owner’s properly 

authorised representative. On being made aware of any dispute over the 

ownership of a horse, the Society will make no amendment to its existing 

records until the dispute has been resolved by the parties concerned. 

DESCRIPTIONS 

It is the responsibility of exhibitors to ensure that the information given 

on show entry forms is accurate. 

AGE 

All ages date from 1st January, e.g. a foal becomes a yearling on the first 

day of the January following that of its birth. 

SUBSTITUTES 

Only entries actually printed in the correct Class in the Show Catalogue 

are eligible to compete. No substitution of a horse is allowed after the 

closing date of entries. 

TACK 

No tack may be worn which in any way conceals an animal’s 

conformation. No rugs, clothing or item of tack that reveals the identity of 

a horse or owner may be worn in the show ring. The Society is in favour of 

four-year-olds being shown in snaffle bridles.

HEADWEAR 

Anyone on a horse at an Affiliated Show must wear a hard hat. 

A skull cap or hat and safety harness according to the current BSI or 

European Standard must be worn by ALL competitors in jumping phase of 

Working Hunter and Ridden Sport Horse Classes. Skull caps must have a 

navy blue or black cover. In all other classes, including in hand, it is 

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that competitors aged 18 or over wear skull 

caps or hats in accordance with the current approved BSI or European 

Standard in order to minimise risk of head injury. It is mandatory for 

competitors under the age of 18 to wear such skull caps or hats. 

AMATEUR 

A person is an amateur for showing purposes, when showing ridden 

hunters in an amateur class, if he or she does not: 

a) Engage in livery, buying, selling, dealing or hiring horses as a means 

of deriving a main source of income. Since 1st January 2011. 

b) Accept remuneration whether it be monetary or goods in kind for 

employment in connection with horses in a racing, showing or livery 

stable or riding school (instruction at Pony Club and Riding Club 

excepted). Since 1st January 2011. 

c) Show a horse owned or sponsored by a company or commercial firm, 

or a horse for which his or her immediate family accepts livery or 

training charges from a person outside the immediate concern. Since 

1st January 2011. 

d) Show a horse which a professional rider has qualified in the Weight or 

Small Ridden Hunter Classes for either the Horse of the Year Show or 

the Royal International Horse Show during the current year, unless 

the horse has subsequently been re-registered under new ownership. 

e) Professional show persons must not enter the Amateur Ring whilst 

the classes are in progress. A professional show person is another term 

for a professional producer and as such a professional groom who 

works for a producer can enter the ring to groom. 

f) A professional rider must not ride or exercise an amateur’s horse on 

the day it is competing in amateur classes. 

SAFETY/INSURANCE 

The Organisers of this Show have taken reasonable precautions to ensure 

the health and safety of everyone present. For these measures to be 

effective, everyone must take all reasonable precautions to avoid and 

prevent accidents occurring and must obey the instructions of the 

Organisers and all the Officials and Stewards. 

DOGS 

In accordance with Health and Safety Regulations, dogs will only be 

permitted in the car and lorry parks and must be kept on a lead at all 

times. (Dogs are not allowed in the competition or public areas, main 

building, cafeteria or stable barns). This must be made clear in the 

schedule. Anyone not adhering to this will be asked to leave the 

showground immediately. 

OBJECTIONS 

Objections of any kind must be made in writing, and delivered to the 

Secretary, within one hour of the close of the judging of the class 

concerned, accompanied by a deposit of Two Hundred & Fifty Pounds, 

which deposit will be forfeited if the objection should prove to be 

frivolous. The Objector must also state the particular and precise character 

of his objection. All objections will be decided by the Stewards, whose 

decision will be final. 

PRIZES 

Judges have the power to withhold any prize in cases where they consider 

the exhibits to be of insufficient merit.

There will be no parade of prize winners, so unless required for a 

Championship horses can be removed from the Showground as soon as 

the class in which they are entered has been judged. 

PRIZE MONEY 

All prize money will be sent out in cheque form from the Edenbridge 

office, after the show. Cheques will be made payable to the owner of the 

horse. 

CHAMPIONSHIPS 

All horses eligible for championships must be forward. Failure to present a 

horse in the championship may result in the forfeiting of prize money 

awarded in the qualifying class. 

ENTRIES 

In the event of the total number of entries received exceeding the 

accommodation at the Society’s disposal, it reserves the right to return any 

entry fee before the opening of the Show without being liable for 

compensation. The Society reserves the right to amalgamate classes in the 

event of insufficient entries. Every effort will be made for classes not to 

clash, but once a class has started a horse cannot leave the ring to 

compete in another class and then return to the original class. 

VETERINARY EXAMINATION 

There will be no veterinary examination in connection with the Show but 

Judges are empowered to call upon the services of one of the Official 

Veterinary Surgeons if there be any doubt as to the soundness of any 

exhibit. 

STABLING 

STABLE BOOKINGS CLOSE ON MONDAY 19th AUGUST 2013 

STABLE BOOKINGS WILL ONLY BE PROCESSED WITH FULL PAYMENT 

Stable hire is charged at a cost of £50 per stable per night, £65 for 2 nights 

or more. Bedding is not included in the cost of hire but Shavings can be 

purchased from the stable manger. Straw will be available at no charge. A 

deposit of £10 is taken, on arrival, for each stable and this is refundable 

providing stables are left clean on departure. The allocation of all stabling 

will be administered by the Stabling Manager at Bury Farm Equestrian 

Centre. Stable hire charges are not refundable in any circumstances. The 

stables are open for arrival between 7am and 10pm. Horses MAY NOT 

arrive outside these times. Stable(s) will be allocated on arrival by the 

Stable Manager. NOTE ALL STABLING TO BE BOOKED DIRECT WITH BURY 

FARM AND PAYMENT MADE DIRECT TO BURY FARM. STABLE BOOKING

CATERING 

The catering facilities will be open for the duration of the show. The 

indoor upstairs bar will be open to the public on the evening of Tuesday 

3rd September from 6pm until 11pm. Tables can also be reserved for 

evening meals during the evening gala performance - (prior reservation 

for this must be made direct with Bury Farm). 

VETERINARY ARRANGEMENTS 

Duty on call Veterinary Surgeons: Chiltern Equine Clinic 01525 222099 [24 

hour cover]. Any treatment costs must be settled direct with the veterinary 

surgeon at the time, on the day of treatment. 

FARRIER 

Please contact Secretary’s Office or Stable Managers Office for contact 

details of Farrier on call.

ENTRIES 

Entries for all classes close on Friday 2nd August 2013. Late entries from 

3rd August 2013 but an additional 100% will be added to any entry for a 

ridden class received in the office after 2nd August 2013. The additional 

surcharge will not be applied to entries relating to late qualifiers or In 

Hand classes. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED ON THE DAY FOR CLASS 1 – 

BURY FARM POTENTIAL COMPETITION HORSE CLASS. The Society reserves 

the right to amalgamate classes in the event of insufficient entries. 

All entries, except foals, must be in possession of current Influenza 

Vaccination Certificate and such document, which must undeniably relate 

to the horse in question, must accompany the animal when brought to 

the Show and may be examined. 

All entries must be on the Society’s Basic Identity Record or Stud Book 

before the entry is accepted except animals registered with BSPS or 

Ponies UK who will be eligible to compete in any Novice or Amateur 

Classes. Foals at foot do not have to be registered in their own right. 

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ENTRIES AND ALLOCATION OF NUMBERS 

Please note that receipt of entries will not be acknowledged unless a SAE 

is enclosed with entries. Numbers will be available for collection from the 

Secretary’s Office at the Show between 12 noon & 5pm on Monday 2nd 

September, between 7am & 5pm on Tuesday 3rd Sept and between 7am & 

2pm on Wednesday 4th September. THERE WILL NOT BE AN EXHIBITORS 

MAIL OUT PRIOR TO THE SHOW. 

WORKING IN/EXERCISE AREAS. 

All the arenas will be available for the exercising of horses until 1 hour 

prior to the commencement of each day’s classes in each respective arena. 

No working in or exercising in the arenas after this time to allow for 

harrowing and preparation of the arenas. There will also be a large, roped 

of grass arena which will be available for working in & exercise 

throughout the duration of the show. 

DRESS CODE FOR EVENING PERFORMANCE 

All competitors who qualify to go through to the evening performance 

will be required to be turned out in hunting dress with hunting whips. 

Men should wear scarlet or black hunt coat, either ordinary pattern or cut 

away. White breeches must be worn with scarlet coat and boots with tops 

and white garter straps. White breeches with top boots may be worn with 

black coats or coloured breeches and plain black boots. Women should 

wear black or blue hunting coat with top hat or hunting cap. Fawn 

breeches and black boots and garter straps. Exhibitors of horses ‘In Hand’ 

will be required to wear black tie or dark suit with tie with similar evening 

attire for ladies.

This Class will be judged in accordance with the rules for

TATTERSALLS AND ROR THOROUGHBRED RIDDEN 

SHOW HORSE. A Thoroughbred mare or gelding, 4 

years old or over, any height. Riders must be 15 years 

or over on 1st January 2013. Horses should be ridden 

in a snaffle, pelham or simple double bridle. Horse 

should be plaited. The first three go forward to the 

Championship at the Hickstead Derby meeting in 

2014. All entries MUST be registered with 

Weatherbys in their General Stud Book and MUST 

also be registered with RoR. The class is open to 

Thoroughbreds that have RACED. There will be a 

prize for the highest placed veteran, 15 years or over. 

The class will be run under the rules of RoR. Horses 

will be ridden by the judge. All those entering horses 

and/or participating in the show agree to be bound 

by the Retraining of Racehorses Rules & Regulations 

from time to time in force. Please be aware that the 

show will split the class on the horse’s last run in a 

race (NH or Flat) should the entries exceed 20). Please 

mark you entry form accordingly. Competitors must 

wear a safety/ kite mark hard hat with chin strap. 

The George Mernagh Memorial Trophy, kindly 

presented by Mr B Smart will be awarded to the 

winner of class 46. 

S18 Judging of British Bred Championship. The highest 

placed horse bred in England, Scotland or Wales in 

classes 17-25 incl, 40-45 incl will be awarded a special 

rosette and will be eligible for this Championship.

The following class is a qualifier for the Cuddy Supreme In Hand 

Championship, Horse of the Year Show, NEC, Birmingham, 9th – 

13th October 2013. 

The objective of the competition is to find the supreme light 

horse or pony in hand champion of the year, irrespective of 

breed or type (excluding heavy horses). 

The Champion horse from the following classes will be eligible to 

compete, provided it has not already won a qualifying round in

Any rider can present up to three horses in each class. Horses 

come into the ring individually and give a short ridden display of 

approx. one minute to be marked out of 20. They then proceed 

straight into the jumping phase. The jumping course will consist 

of a mixture of coloured and rustic fences and produce a 

minimum of eight jumping efforts each of which will be marked 

out of 10 at the Judge’s discretion. There is no set penalty for a 

pole down or run out but three refusals or fall of horse or rider 

results in elimination. All horses, unless eliminated, are required 

to come back without saddles for conformation assessment to be 

marked out of 50. No hind boots or bandages of any description 

are allowed in the collecting ring, warm up or in the actual class. 

S23 Supreme Ridden Sport Horse Championship to be 

judged from the Champion & Reserve from S12 & S22.

Leighton Buzzard. You will reach a large roundabout 

(McDonald’s and Total garage) proceed left at roundabout on 

the A4146 towards Hemel Hempstead. After approximately 500 

yards, turn right towards Little Billington & slapton. Continue on 

through the hamlet of Little Billington until you reach the village 

of Slapton. Immediately past the white border gates of Slapton 

village turn right into Bury Farm.
