Saint Joseph
HealthCare
1877
Reverence Reverence
Founded in 1877 as Lexington’s first hospital, Saint
Joseph is a 446-bed acute, medical, and surgical facility in
Central Kentucky. A variety of critical care and specialty
services are provided by hospital-based pharmacists,
clinical pharmacists, and clinical pharmacy specialists at
SJHC. The inpatient pharmacy at SJHC includes a
satellite pharmacy that provides services to 22 operating
rooms and 52 intensive care unit beds, including a 22-bed
cardiothoracic and vascular (CTVU) unit as well as a 12-
bed coronary care unit (CCU). The facilities also include
158 telemetry unit beds, composed of a 28-bed heart
failure unit, a 33-bed CT surgery step down unit, and a
34-bed interventional cardiology care unit.
For years, SJHC has been nationally recognized for
outstanding patient care. SJHC has been recognized by
Solucient as one of the nation’s Top 100 Hospitals, by
HealthGrades as Lexington’s highest-rated hospital for
cardiac care, and by U.S. News & World Report as a Top
50 Hospital for Heart and Heart Surgery. In 2006 the
pharmacy program received the ASHP Best Practice
Award, the KSHP Institution of the Year Award, and the
KSHP Pharmacist of the Year Award. Also in 2006,
SJHC was recognized for the third year in a row for
service excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates
Distinguished Hospital Program and also as one of the
nation’s 100 Top hospitals in quality care by Solucient.
These distinctions acknowledge a commitment to
outstanding service and premier pharmaceutical care.
2
The programs at SJHC are designed to provide broad exposure to patient-centered care in a
dynamic and goal-oriented environment. Emphasis is placed on development of independent
practice skills in comprehensive pharmacy practice, clinical and didactic teaching, research
methodology, and self-evaluation. Great importance is placed on the residents’ individual goals
and expectations thereby allowing program experiences and assessments to be regularly
restructured to keep pace with their development throughout the year. An interactive teaching
environment allows residents to precept pharmacy student experiences and present classroom
lectures. The on-call program is a resident learning experience that exemplifies the critical role
residents serve in providing patient care. Residents are members of the Adult Cardiac Code
team as well as the Medical Rapid Response team and provide care to patients during
emergency scenarios. The Chief resident program allows each resident to cultivate strong
leadership qualities while serving as the primary contact for the residency during alternating
blocks of time. Responsibilities of the Chief include coordinating the P&T committee, attending
medical staff meetings, and planning residency events. Upon completion of the program, each
resident will be prepared to be exceedingly competitive in both clinical or leadership
opportunities within the profession.
PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency
A variety of rotational as well as longitudinal
experiences help to refine residents’ in-depth
knowledge and skills in independent practice.
Rotations are offered in a variety of
therapeutic areas and are tailored to the
interests of the individual. While on clinical
service, the residents’ responsibilities include
collaboration with healthcare team members
via participation on rounds and independent
therapeutic drug monitoring to identify,
resolve, and prevent drug-related problems in
support of optimal patient centered care.
PGY-2 Cardiology Residency
The purpose of the PGY-2 Cardiology
Residency is to further develop clinical skills
in key areas of cardiology and critical care
medicine. Core rotations expose the resident
to a variety of cardiovascular therapeutic
areas and at least half of all clinical
experiences focus on critically ill patients.
The PGY-2 resident participates in
interdisciplinary rounds and serves as a team
member for the Heart Failure Fast Track, the
AMI Fast Track, the CT Fast Track, and
Cardiac Cath Lab teams.
