AUTUMN / WINTER 2011 COLLECTION
Mary Katrantzou
British Fashion designer Mary Katrantzou was born in Athens to an interior
designer mother and a father trained in textile design. She continued the family
legacy by studying Textile design at Central St Martins in London whilst
working alongside Sophia Kokosalaki for two seasons. In 2008 she graduated
with an MA distinction in Womenswear and her initial ready-to-wear collection
debuted at London Fashion Week in Spring / Summer 2009 with a collection of
only nine dresses that picked up 15 prestigious stockists including Browns,
Joyce and Colette.
Inspired by perfume bottles, artisan blown glass and eighteenth century society
paintings, Katrantzou’s fashion collections revolve around icons of luxury, physical objects from art
and design that women are not be able to wear. Her Atelier Swarovski accessories for Autumn
Winter 2011 complement her imaginative design aesthetic with a collection of wearable statement
jewellery pieces. Necklaces and pendants feature iconic talisman shapes made with crystal mesh,
scattered with pendants and strung on luxurious cord fastenings. Earrings, rings and bangles are
crowned with chromatic clusters of crystal beads, from fuchsia to emerald, amethyst and sapphire
interspersed with silver shade and aurora borealis pendants. These crystal combinations
complement the opaque white and blue enamelled bracelets to create a rich, vibrant collection
through considered use of colour and texture.
“"I wanted to do something with my Atelier Swarovski collection that is refined, light and desirable. I
combined the translucence and brilliance of Swarovski crystal pendants with a porcelain finish,
achieved by using enamel. We also designed most pieces with clusters of Aurora Borealis crystals to
give the collection an iridescent feel. I hope the jewellery looks like a prized possession you would
love to own.” Mary Katrantzou
AUTUMN / WINTER 2011 COLLECTION
Arik Levy
Designer, technician, artist, photographer and filmmaker; Arik Levy's multidisciplinary
approach to design can be seen in galleries and museums across the
globe. Originally from Israel, he studied Industrial Design in Switzerland and went
on to work in Japan before returning to Europe. He currently works in Paris with his
team of 20 designers and graphic artists that make up his progressive company
‘Ldesign’. Best known for dynamic furniture design, installations and limited edition
pieces, Arik Levy creates a collection for Atelier Swarovski Autumn Winter 2011
that adds a new dimension to jewellery design with crystal.
The ‘RockCrater’ collection introduces highly polished metal structures reminiscent
of rocks in the natural world, broken open to expose the crystal within. Grouped organically to form
necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings the differently sized RockCraters encase thousands of tiny
crystal chatons. The encrusted crystal interior of the shapes illuminates the structured form that
surrounds them whilst the beauty of the collection lies in the juxtaposition of material and texture; opaque
smooth metals in gold, silver and gunmetal contrast with the translucent golden shadow, khaki and silver
shade crystals.
“With the RockCraters collection I aim to celebrate a contemporary return to futuristic nature….with a
sculpture-to-wear statement that stems from my artistic body of work and my quest for the new
perfect unreal nature, I give life to my narrative of techno-poetic science…
Just like a mineral discovered in the wild, the sculpted craters expose the beauty of the formation
composed by a man-made micro chaton cut. These crystal formations, in a unique mix of multiple
colours, create depth, reflection and shine. The different sizes of the craters give this sculpture-towear
a variety of configurations. At every movement of the body, light will sparkle within the crater to
create a multitude of colour effects in the crystals, while the super polished rock facets will reflect
and project colours, images and textures.” Arik Levy
AUTUMN / WINTER 2011 COLLECTION
Rodrigo Otazu
”Powerful designs for powerful women.” The illustrious jewellery designer Rodrigo
Otazu launched his label ‘Otazu’ in 1991 with luxurious costume jewellery before
going on to work in theatre, film and with musicians. Through his talent, passion
for life and all consuming sense of style, Otazu designs costumes and dresses for
celebrities from Kylie Minogue to Lady Gaga, Lauryn Hill and Britney Spears. His
work encompasses influences from architecture, music, travel, fashion and the
arts resulting in a strong creative vision seen in his Atelier Swarovski collection for
Autumn Winter 2011.
His inspirational designs celebrate innovative use of crystal; by flipping the
crystals upside down he exposes a unique crystal cut that has never been used before. With
necklaces that reference tribal jewellery shapes, to cuffs, earrings and pyramid pendants, Xillion cut
crystal squares in tones of silver shade and golden shadow are aligned in cubes and linear
formations to create a collectible range of contemporary accessories for Atelier Swarovski.
“Having worked with Swarovski crystal for the last 15 years my first impulse was to do something out
of the box, something distinctive and innovative. I always strive to be different from everyone else.
So I did it ... I turned myself and the stones upside down and, boy oh boy how much fun was it doing
my job again! Music, sparkles, passion and love all come together in my designs to make you feel
unique.” Rodrigo Otazu
AUTUMN / WINTER 2011 COLLECTION
Cate Adair
Cate Adair is the Emmy-nominated Costume Designer for the smash hit
series, Desperate Housewives. Based in Los Angeles, Cate completed
formal training in Fashion and Costume Design in her native Britain and has
gone on to achieve industry-wide acclaim for her extensive design work in
feature films, television and theatre. With credits that include Oprah Winfrey’s
critically acclaimed Before Women Had Wings, the hit film I Know What You
Did Last Summer, Beverly Hills Cop III, and Dreamwork’s Win a Date with
Tad Hamilton.
Cate lends her considerable experience in the film world to design Atelier
Swarovski’s first ever collection of clutch bags. Destined for the red carpet and encrusted with
Swarovski crystal, the bags are available in black satin, silver and gold leather. The bags include
delicate design features from a crystal bracelet which secures the clutch around the wrist, to
Swarovski crystal clasps.
“In designing for Atelier Swarovski, I was inspired by the universality of the Swarovski crystals... the
myriad ways they could be applied with equally stunning effect, an infinite array of colours, textures,
shapes, and sizes that I could use in artistic expressions from geometric patterns to seemingly
random clusters.
In the Evening Clutch Collection there are two diametrically opposed but quite complementary
designs. I’ve tried to capture the cadence and soft glow of a sophisticated evening and the
excitement and energy of endless possibilities.” Cate Adair
AUTUMN / WINTER 2011 COLLECTION
Lesley Vik Waddell
Lesley Vik Waddell’s extensive design background includes working for
Vivienne Westwood, Donna Karan, Christian Dior and Cartier. Educated in
England and a jewellery design graduate, Vik Waddell produced her premier
jewellery collection which was bought in its entirety by Harrods and Erickson
Beamon. This has since developed into a successful collection selling in
over 40 stores worldwide which runs alongside her couture line of private
commissions in addition to her own label, ‘Vik’. She currently lives in
Switzerland.
Inspired by 1950’s glamour, Lesley Vik Waddell’s Cascade Collection for Atelier
Swarovski denotes style and elegance through the imagery and movement of the Swarovski crystals. Water
provided Lesley with a wonderful starting point, a key element in both nature and in crystal. She combines
architectural crystals and chandelier components with twisted silk cords. Silver shade crystals are strung
onto a glossy grey cord, in contrast to the black cord that is fringed and knotted with Jet beads. The
necklaces, bracelets, Lariats and rings form a versatile collection of pieces that can be worn in a variety of
ways.
“The collection as suggested in the name was inspired by the beauty and power of water cascading
through nature, carving a path in the most organic way. Beauty is something we humans crave for,
to be inspired by the sublime. I have also always found fairy tales a rich source of inspiration. The
fight between good versus evil. dark and light. The duality of life mixed with magic and endless
possibilities. Opulent rainfalls of brilliant glittering crystals combined with the sensual feeling of silk
cord provide an exciting and luxurious way to step into the glamour of the 1950’s. Created for
women with the confidence and power only possible in the 21 st century”
