Mercy Blood Drive<br />
Our Y family has helped to save up to 252<br />
patient’s lives with our donations so far! The<br />
<strong>Scantic</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Y Family Center will be hosting<br />
Mercy Medical Center’s Bloodmobile.<br />
Registration will be taken at the Welcome<br />
Center. Photo identification must be presented<br />
when donating. Your donation will help build and<br />
sustain this vital resource for our friends, family,<br />
neighbors and community.<br />

Bereavement Support Group<br />
for Children & Teens<br />
Do you know a child or teen that has experienced the<br />
death of someone close?<br />
Rick’s Place provides bereavement support to children<br />
and teens when they have experienced the death of<br />
someone close. Our groups are not therapy groups but<br />
rather mutual support groups for children and teens--<br />
kids helping kids to cope with their grief. Participants will<br />
talk, make things and have the opportunity to share pictures<br />
and mementos. The information shared in the<br />
group is strictly confidential.<br />
Children and teens come with their adult<br />
guardian every other week during the school<br />
year. Groups are free of charge.<br />

Inias (15-24 months): Swimmers are introduced to basic water skills including<br />

Perch (24-36 months): Modeled after our pre-school program, swimmers will<br />

entries, class will be in preparation for independent pre-school classes.<br />

Join your troop for an evening of fun at the pool! Choose from a recreational<br />
swim or badge work to earn swim badges. Just provide the badges<br />
and the criteria and we will provide a certified guard to assist your troop<br />
and work with your scouts. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED!<br />

<strong>Summer</strong> brings you a few different options for swim lessons! Take classes<br />
once a week for 5 weeks or 3 times a week for 2 weeks. Note the differences<br />
in frequencies, fees and dates when registering.<br />
*Please note any class with fewer than three participants is subject to cancellation.<br />
Make-up Policy: We cannot offer make-ups, credits, or refunds for any<br />
missed classes during the session. Classes that are cancelled for any reason<br />
by the <strong>YMCA</strong> will be re-scheduled by the Aquatics Department.<br />

Pike I (Beginner I): This class is designed for the preschooler who is a newcomer<br />
to the program and to the water. This level helps children develop<br />
safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement<br />
in the water. It is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle<br />
stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort with holding the face in<br />
the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.<br />

independently. Swimmers are now comfortable getting their face wet, floating<br />
on their back with assistance, and working with lesson equipment.<br />
Swimmers will continue working on basic skills of floating, kicking and paddling<br />
in front, back and side body positions.<br />

Eel (Advanced Beginner): This advanced beginner level reinforces Pike skills<br />
as well as introducing basic swim techniques. Swimmers will continue to<br />
work on kicking, floating skills, and perform the progressive paddle stroke.<br />
Safety is stressed in this level. Children should be comfortable swimming<br />
independently with a flotation device as well as submerging underwater.<br />

Ray/Starfish (Intermediate): At this level children review previous skills,<br />
improve stroke skills, learn more personal, safety, and rescue skills, build<br />
endurance, they’ll also learn underwater swimming skills and learn to tread<br />
water. Children can swim across the pool on their front and back without<br />
assistance by the end of this level.<br />

Polliwog I (Beginner I): This is the beginning level for school-age children. It<br />
gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and<br />
floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke,<br />
and side and back paddle. This level requires no pre-requisites.<br />

Polliwog II (Advanced Beginner): For the experienced Polliwog or for beginners<br />
who are comfortable but not yet strong enough to swim in deeper water.<br />
This level teaches water orientation skills, arm stroke, kicking, rhythmic<br />
breathing, flotation, and developing self confidence. Swimmers will also<br />
begin to experience swimming at various depths in the pool.<br />

Guppy (Intermediate I): Swimmers continue to practice and build upon basic<br />
skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a flotation device. They<br />
are introduced to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and<br />
elementary backstroke. Children can swim a length of the pool without<br />
assistance at the end of this level.<br />

Minnow (Intermediate II): Minnows must be able to swim 25yds front crawl<br />
using consistent rotary breathing and 25yds back crawl. This level refines<br />
front and back crawl and introduces breaststroke, survival floating, treading<br />
water, and emergency procedures.<br />

Fish/Flying Fish (Advanced I): At this level, students work to perform the crawl<br />

and continue learning personal safety, boating, and rescue skills.<br />

may or may not have had a previous swim class. Teens will work on various<br />
strokes, building strength and endurance, as well as correct body<br />

ACTIVE OLDER ADULTS<br />
The <strong>Scantic</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>YMCA</strong> offers a number of classes both on-site and offsite<br />
for seniors to attend. Please see the SV membership desk and current<br />
group exercise schedule for a complete listing of these classes. Each<br />
class has a fee of $2.50 or a Senior Punch Pass may be purchased at $35<br />
for 20 classes.<br />

Basics of Aquatics: Start with the basics…become more comfortable in the<br />
water. Learn basic body positions, breathing methods and begin to build<br />
your strength. Instructors will work on floating and kicking skills to begin<br />
and help each participant improve at their own pace.<br />

Stroke Development: Learn how to swim more efficiently and effectively!<br />
Review various strokes; improve arm, leg and head positions. Instructors<br />
will help to pinpoint specifics to aid in your ease of motion in the water.<br />

Conditioning and Endurance: Improve your times or increase your yardage!<br />
This class will help you build your endurance while swimming, instructors<br />
will aid you in goal setting and building your own drills and swim workouts.<br />

Masters Swim<br />
An organized swim workout, geared toward active swimmers and triathletes.<br />
Workouts will range from 1,500 to 4,000 yards in an hour workout.<br />

Back Yard Pool <strong>Program</strong><br />
Come let the <strong>YMCA</strong> teach our Aquatics <strong>Program</strong> in the comfort of your<br />
own back yard. Our two week sessions run Monday through Thursday with<br />
Friday as a rain day. See front desk for more information and registration<br />
forms or contact the Aquatics Department at ext. 3124. All registration is<br />
on a first come first serve basis. Until registrants receive a phone call from<br />
the <strong>YMCA</strong> the times and availability of classes are not confirmed.<br />

A variety of guided yoga postures with detailed instructions and modifications<br />
given for individual needs. This class is appropriate for all levels<br />
including beginners and is taught by Kate Forest RYT, owner of Bliss Yoga<br />

Tai Chi<br />

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese form of martial arts. It is a mind-body, self<br />
healing system that uses movement, meditation and breathing to improve<br />
health and well being.<br />

water program focuses on increasing range of motion, strength, coordination<br />

exercises are included in this class with modifications if necessary.<br />

Zumbatomic fitness taught by Melanie Sartori, is a fusion of the ZUMBA<br />

at the same time. Parents are encouraged to participate in this family fitness<br />

results you want from your workout. Whether your goal is to lose weight,<br />
alter your body composition, gain strength, improve stability and balance,<br />
or train for a specific event, our trainers are equipped with the experience,<br />
knowledge and know-how to assist you in achieving you goal. Once your<br />
goals are established, our trainers will design a program to help you succeed<br />
in creating a new you! One-on-one assistance is offered to implement<br />

Enjoy a variety of activities at the Y this summer! This program will provide<br />
your child with the opportunity for physical activity, creative pursuits,<br />
and old-fashioned fun! Each week we will have a different theme. You can<br />
sign up for the week or by the day! Arts and crafts, swimming, cooking,<br />
science projects, gym games, movies and sports are just some of the<br />
activities to experience! For a weekly schedule and themes, please check<br />

Mondays & Wednesdays. Lunch will be provided on Fridays.<br />

Come and enjoy our first ever Y <strong>Summer</strong> Carnival! We will have many different<br />
activities, challenges, and games! This will be an outdoor event,<br />

TEEN CLASSES<br />
Zumba Moms-Wait No More! (Ages 2.5-5)<br />
While you’re taking Zumba (or getting the work out of your choice!), your<br />
child will be actively engaged in gym games! Each week participants will<br />
be introduced to a new sport and/or tag game and will learn the basic skills<br />
associated with that sport or game. The last 15 minutes of each class will<br />
feature structured free play to wind down from all the fun! Anyone can participate<br />
in this fun 75 minute program!<br />
Tee Ball (Ages 3-5)<br />
This class will teach the basic skills associated with tee ball, throwing<br />
catching, base running, hitting, working on hand eye coordination and having<br />
fun with others. Skills instruction and game play will be determined by<br />
the class age.<br />
Rookies Basketball (Ages 3-5yrs)<br />
Learn the basic skills and have fun with friends! Participants will learn the<br />
basics of dribbling, passing and shooting during this fun, non-competitive<br />
class.<br />
Y Super Soccer (Ages 4-5)<br />
This class is for children who have taken a <strong>YMCA</strong> soccer class before<br />
and/or are ready to learn more difficult skills. The class includes passing,<br />
trapping, goalie position and juggling skills while learning body awareness<br />
and working with others.<br />
Sports Bugs (Ages 4-5)<br />
Not sure what sport your child likes? Why not try them all? Participants in<br />
this class will learn a new sport each week. Sports Bugs will discover soccer,<br />
basketball, t-ball and more. Learn fundamentals while enhancing<br />
teamwork, listening and motor skills.<br />
Kid Fit (Ages 5k -8)<br />
In this class, your child will gain fitness and sports skills, while improving<br />
confidence and self-esteem. It will provide a workout for the mind and<br />
body. Rockwall climbing, and healthy food options activities included for<br />
Kid Fit at the Y!<br />
Toddler Soccer (Ages 2.5-3)<br />
Parent participation is strongly encouraged. This class is for preschoolers<br />
who are just getting started. The class will focus on body awareness, basic<br />
kicking, following directions and working with others. Skill-based learning<br />
and fun are the focus.<br />
Toddler Flag Football (Ages 2.5-3)<br />
Parent participation is strongly encouraged. This class is for preschoolers<br />

Come join the fun! Parent participation is strongly suggested and encouraged.<br />
Have a Ball is designed for your child to learn new skills, increase<br />
coordination and enjoy movement! Beginning with gross motor skills such<br />
as throwing, catching, and running, your little one will then progress as we<br />
introduce the skills associated with a variety of sports. This class will help<br />
your child become more comfortable with an instructor and strengthen<br />
their listening , socialization, and motor skills.<br />

Physical Therapy at <strong>YMCA</strong> of Greater Springfield<br />
(Springfield and <strong>Scantic</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> Family Centers)<br />
<strong>YMCA</strong> Members and community members may utilize the Physical<br />
Therapists conveniently located in our 2 family centers. Our Physical<br />
Therapists work closely with the <strong>YMCA</strong> staff to provide the client with the<br />
best care possible. With our in house therapist, we are able to provide you<br />
with a continuum of service from evaluation through treatment. Our staff<br />
then can follow your treatment with the proper follow up exercise program<br />
to reduce the possibility of reoccurrence. For more information please<br />

Aquatics Rehabilitation and Therapy<br />
Are you recovering from an injury, accident or do you have a chronic condition?<br />
Is land exercise too much for your body or do you just love the<br />
water? Consider joining our exercise class that meets 2 times per week in<br />
a warm water accessible pool. This one hour exercise class is designed to<br />
get you and keep you moving with a low risk of injury. <strong>YMCA</strong> located<br />
Physical therapist, Tom Bianco, will modify the exercise program to meet<br />
your specific needs. Instructors meet with PT to insure program effectiveness.<br />

started on the road to your recovery.<br />

First Step Back (Adults)<br />
Designed for anyone in need of one-on-one assistance with an exercise<br />
program, our trained fitness staff will work with you for 1 hour 2-3 times per<br />
week. Your 4, 6, or 8-week program is developed and supervised by our<br />
physical therapist, Tom Bianco. Individuals with a variety of medical conditions<br />
will benefit from this safe, progressive exercise program. To<br />

Next Step (Adults)<br />
Graduates of the Back on Track program here is your next step in your<br />
exercise progression. Ready for some independence but not completely?<br />
Meet with our trainer in small groups of 2-3 people for 1 hour 2-3 times per<br />
week for 4, 6 or 8 weeks. Referrals required from the Back on Track program<br />
only.<br />
Exercise Evaluation & Prescription<br />
Are you having difficulty completing your workout because of pain or<br />
injury? <strong>YMCA</strong> located Physical Therapist, Tom Bianco, will provide an<br />
examination of your past or present musculoskeletal injury and its impact<br />
on your exercise program. He will assist you in developing a safe and<br />
