Welcome to the
Campus Community!
Seattle Pacific University
may soon be your new home.
Living on campus will provide you with new opportunities
to meet and live with a close community of
people and become involved in college life. You’ll soon
discover we’re more than just a place to live.
You probably have a lot of questions about what
it’s like to live at SPU. This booklet, and the expanded
information at www.spu.edu/living, will answer many
of your questions, plus provide essential information
about housing and meal-plan options.
Directions on applying for housing and submitting
your housing deposit are outlined on page 12 of this
booklet. Because there are a limited number of spaces
in each building, please be aware that not all students
will receive their preferred assignment. Priority for
available spaces is outlined on page 14.
Keep your Campus Living booklet throughout the
process to help you make decisions along the way.
And while you’re getting ready to move, we’ll be busy
preparing your new home!
As part of the Office of Student Life, Residence Life oversees the residential community,
providing opportunities for social interaction and programs which emphasize
educational excellence and personal development. The Office of University Services,
which includes Campus Dining and Housing Services, manages room and roommate
assignments and meal plans. We work together to provide a living-learning
environment that offers physical comfort and safety while supporting personal and
academic growth.
residential
living requirement
Since it was founded in 1891, Seattle Pacific University has been committed to the
education of the whole person. For this reason, the residential experience is considered
an integral part of a student’s education. Research shows that students who
belong to a campus residential community have a more productive, and ultimately
more satisfying, college experience than those who live off campus.
A two-year guarantee of six consecutive academic quarters of housing is given to
first-time freshmen. SPU strongly encourages students to live on campus subsequent
quarters as space is available. The Residential Living Requirement is evaluated yearly
to support the residential experience, as well as respond to housing demand.
For the 2010–11 academic year,
students are required to live on
campus unless:
• They are 20 years or older,
or have achieved junior
status (completed 90 SPU or
transferable credits) prior to the
first day of class for the quarter
for which they are applying.
• They live at home with
parent(s), legal guardian,
spouse, or dependent children.
• They are graduate students.
• They are enrolled for eight
credits or less.
“I love living in Ashton Hall.
There’s always something to do and
someone to hang out with. Ashton is
definitely worth the climb up the hill!”
– Matt Van Deren, Sophomore
emerson hall
ashton hall
The friendly atmosphere in
Ashton Hall makes all of its
residents feel at home. Ashton
is SPU’s largest residence hall, and its hilltop setting
offers a striking view of the campus and the
Lake Washington Ship Canal.
Annual events include the Ashton Cup (a lipsync
contest), the Ashton Art Show, and a formal
ball, which in the past has been held at the Space
Needle and aboard an Argosy cruise on Puget
Sound. Its hall council is known for creative and
thought-provoking programming.
Ashton is an ideal place for both studying and
relaxing. It boasts a renovated lounge and convenient
exercise room. With more than 400 students,
you’ll have many opportunities for making
new friends.
Students say Emerson is a
great place to live, learn, and
build friendships to last a
lifetime. Emerson opened in 2001 and features
suite-style rooms and card-access security. Other
features include a main lounge with gas fireplace,
underground parking, and an exercise center.
Emerson Hall is centrally located, providing easy access
to many campus buildings. Popular events include
a quarterly Coffee House, the Emerson Film Festival,
and a Spring Dance, which was held at the yacht club
on Lake Union in 2009.
Living in Emerson also provides a unique opportunity
for students to participate in educational
programs and conversations related to global issues
and cross-cultural relationships through the BRIDGES
program. BRIDGES encourages residents to live out
SPU’s commitment to grace-filled community and
reconciliation, by breaking down barriers and helping
to bridge cultural differences.
Opened in 1965 and originally named
Upper Residence Hall, Ashton was
renamed in honor of Dr. Philip F.
professor at Seattle Pacific University
from 1929 to 1971.
“Emerson’s community
fosters friendships that will
last a lifetime. Its spirited and inviting
atmosphere sets it apart from the rest
of the halls and makes it an easy place to
call home.”
hill hall
Hill Hall is known across
campus for its family
atmosphere. Its comfortable main lounge
is where students often gather for study and conversation.
Hill Hall “beach,” a grassy area behind the
hall, is a popular place for outdoor recreation.
Hill Hall is also home of the REX Center, which
offers circuit training and aerobic equipment. This
residence hall is just a short walk to both Gwinn Commons
and the SPU Library.
Annual events include Decades Skate, a retreat to
Camp Casey, and a ball at a premier Seattle venue such
as the Experience Music Project in 2009.
For rates, see inside back cover.
Layouts of typical rooms in Hill are available at:
moyer hall
Moyer fosters a close-knit
community where residents
know each other well. Located
on the edge of Tiffany Loop, Moyer is in the heart of
central campus and close to most classrooms, dining
locations, and recreational facilities.
In this fun and family-like hall, Moyer residents enjoy
activities such as a fall retreat, an annual broomball
game, and the Experience Moyer Project (EMP).
Once a year, the Moyer Hall Council organizes an
all-hall banquet, which has been held at the Columbia
Tower and the Skansonia Ferry Boat on Lake Union.
“Living in Hill Hall is
awesome! There is a tremendous
sense of community here. I know I’m going
to be friends with the people I’ve met for
years to come.”
– James Cannariato, Sophomore
Hill Hall opened in 1962 and was
named for the Reuben Hill family,
who donated the property for the
school’s expansion.
For rates, see inside back cover.
Layouts of typical rooms in Moyer are available at:
spu.edu/moyer
Opened in 1953 and remodeled in
1983, Moyer was named in honor
of Jacob Moyer for his years of
service from 1925–46 as a professor
and dean of Seattle Pacific.
“Moyer is a community of
friends. You’ll sense its welcoming atmosphere
and tight-knit community as soon
as you arrive. It’s a place where you’ll make
friendships to last a lifetime.”
Students also have access to a community lounge and
making housing
assignments
Both your priority and your preferences influence
your housing assignment. First-time freshmen and
transfer students are prioritized separately by the
date their admissions applications are received —
the earlier your date, the higher your priority. Firsttime
freshmen are assigned to a residence hall and
transfers are assigned to an apartment according
to the preferences provided on the Campus Housing
Application.
Your chances of getting into one of your preferred
housing locations will depend on its availability
and how many other students with an earlier
admissions application date have requested that
location. If your first choice is unavailable, we will
look to your second choice and so on.
If you are a transfer student who wishes to be
placed on a waiting list for the halls, please communicate
your request in the “Notes” section of
your application. In the event that space becomes
available, you will be contacted in September.
Special
Accommodations
If you require special housing accommodations
due to a documented
disability, please answer “YES” to
question #3 on the Campus Housing
Application, and contact the coordinator
for Disability Support Services
in the Center for Learning at 206-
281-2272. Incoming students should
submit their request by June 1 for
Autumn Quarter, or six weeks before
the beginning of Winter and Spring
quarters.
dining services
Sodexo Campus Services has
maintained a partnership for
more than 40 years with Seattle Pacific
University, meeting the food service needs of students,
faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and guests to the campus.
Students are their primary focus, and they strive
to serve quality products that are healthy, nutritious,
and flavorful. With national brands such as Starbucks®,
Subway®, and Einstein Bros.®, and local favorites like
Pura Vida®, you’ll find variety and value. Convenient
locations, flexible meal plans, outstanding customer
service, and quality food combine to make dining at
SPU a great experience.
matching
roommates
Roommate matching is also guided by the preferences you mark on
the Campus Housing Application. We will seek to match you with
someone who has marked similar charactaristics and interests, so
be honest and choose your answers carefully. Roommate assignments
are made without regard to disability, race, religion, creed, or
national origin.
If you want to room with a friend rather than be matched with
someone new, enter your friend’s SPU ID number in question #2 on
your application. As long as the request is mutual, we’ll do our best
to place you together but can make no guarantees. It will depend
largely on whether you and your requested roommate have similar
priority.
Although you and your roommate may be matched because
you share some of the same qualities, you should not expect those
similarities to ensure a strong roommate relationship. Regardless
of how well you match on paper, or even if you choose your roommate,
characteristics such as cooperation, compassion, and communication
make roommate relationships work. Coming into your
new living situation with an open mind will contribute to developing
a friendship that will last long after you graduate.
Special Dietary Needs
If you have a special diet or a food
allergy, the executive chef and food
service managers will discuss options
to meet your needs. Please answer
“YES” to question #4 on the Campus
Housing Application and contact
meal plans
We recognize that student schedules and
dining preferences vary; therefore, we have developed meal
plans to provide flexibility and convenience. For complete plan details, please visit
www.spu.edu/MealOptions. You will make your meal-plan choice on the Room and
Meal Plan Contract that is sent with your housing assignment.
Meal Plan Requirements
Residence Halls. All students living in Ashton, Hill, Emerson, and Moyer Halls are
required to choose a quarterly meal plan, either the Unlimited or a Weekly Block Plan.
Each plan combines access to the main dining hall (Gwinn Commons) with SPU Points
to spend at any dining location (see “Understanding Points” below). The more access
you have to Gwinn, the fewer points you’ll need to supplement your meal plan.
The Unlimited Plan allows you unlimited access to Gwinn during their service hours
— you can enter for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and even stop in for a snack or two
during the day (please note: all food must be consumed in the dining hall).
If your class, work or social schedule varies, you may want to choose a Weekly Block
plan, which allows you a certain number of entrances into Gwinn per week to use at
your discretion. For example, let’s say you are on the Weekly Block 14. On Sunday, you
eat breakfast and lunch at Gwinn. That evening, you choose to use your SPU points to
pick up a Subway sandwich for a study group with friends. Your two entrances into
Gwinn would be taken off of your balance of 14, leaving you with 12 to use for the remainder
of the week. Block and point balances are available from the cashier and via
the Campus Card web site at www.spu.edu/CampusCards.
Campus Apartments. Although not required, students living in campus apartments
may choose any plan, including a Block 25 (25 entrances into Gwinn), Block 50 (50
entrances into Gwinn), or Advantage Points (see below).
Understanding Points
SPU Points. Unlimited and Weekly Block Plans come with SPU Points, which are worth
a penny a point and save you sales tax. For example, let’s say you have an Unlimited
Plan, which includes 7,500 points ($75). You want to purchase a latté at Academic Perks
for $2.55. The cashier will deduct 255 points from your balance, leaving you with 7,245
points ($72.45) to use the remainder of the quarter. Unused SPU Points will roll from
quarter to quarter, but not year to year. If you deplete your SPU points before the end of
the quarter, you may purchase Advantage Points.
Answers to Frequently
Asked Housing Questions
When can I move in?
New students may check in according to the following
schedule:
Autumn Quarter 2010
Thursday, September 23, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Winter Quarter 2011
Monday, January 3, 1 to 4 p.m.
Spring Quarter 2011
Tuesday, March 29, 1 to 4 p.m.
Staff will be unavailable outside of these times, so
please plan your arrival accordingly. Students who
arrive earlier than their scheduled check-in time
must find alternate arrangements off-campus.
Details about where to check in will be sent with
your assignment.
What can I bring with me?
We want you to be comfortable in your new home
away from home, but you may want to consider
prioritizing what you’ll really need. Space will
be limited. When you receive your roommate’s
name(s), you may want to call him or her to decide
who will bring what item; you probably won’t
need or have room for two televisions, two stereos,
etc. A checklist of suggested items to bring is
available at www.spu.edu/WhatToBring.
What should I know about SPU
computer network connections?
There are high-speed ethernet connections to the
campus network and Internet in each residence
hall room and apartment (one per student). You
may connect your computer to this service at
no extra charge. Wireless access is also available
throughout the majority of campus. For more information,
go to www.spu.edu/CISHelpDesk.
What is my mailing address?
Residence hall students are assigned a mailstop
(the term used for your mailbox). Mailboxes
are located outside of the Student Union Building.
Campus apartment residents either receive
a mailstop or, for specific buildings, have mail
delivered directly to a mailbox at their residence.
Mailing Services will provide mailing information
to you by September 15, 2010.
May I see my room before I move in?
Residence halls are used for conferences during the
summer and are closed during Winter and Spring
breaks, therefore rooms are not available for viewing.
Layouts of typical rooms in each hall are available
at www.spu.edu/HousingOptions.
May I have a car on campus?
Parking spaces on campus are limited, and there is
a quarterly fee. You may park your car on the street,
but SPU is located in a residential area and those
spaces are very limited. Safety and Security manages
campus parking and encourages you to consider
leaving your car at home and using Seattle buses
that stop near campus for transportation.
What about housing and food
service during holiday breaks?
Residence halls close during Christmas and Spring
breaks. Residents will need to vacate the hall,
but may leave personal property in their rooms.
Students occupying the campus apartments may
remain on campus during breaks. Food service is
not available in Gwinn Commons during Thanksgiving,
Christmas, or Spring breaks.
Residence halls close on the following schedule:
Autumn Quarter 2010
Thursday, December 9, 10 a.m.
Winter Quarter 2011
Saturday, March 19, 10 a.m.
Spring Quarter 2011
Friday, June 10, 4 p.m.
