Student and School Demographics
Meath Park School is a unique educational community that encompasses families and students from several surrounding
communities. Meath Park School is located in the village of Meath Park which is approximately 25 minutes north east of
Prince Albert. Meath Park School is comprised of students from the surrounding communities of Albertville, Paddockwood,
Candle Lake, and Weirdale and the rural area of Garden River.
There is equal representation of both male and female students in the school. There are varied levels of socio-economic
status, as well as many religious and ethnic backgrounds. The school serves a very low population of First Nation and Metis
students. There are approximately 15 students living in foster care that attend Meath Park School.
Governance Structure
School Community Council
The School Community Council is made up of 9 members that include the principal, vice principal, staff rep, school
counsellor, student rep and 4 parent members. Yearly, the SCC looks at the school's learning improvement plan and makes
suggestions for improvements. The SCC is also involved in looking at school achievement by taking a close look at
Provincial AFL data. The SCC helps communicate the plan to the community through a bulletin board in the school as well
as a monthly school newsletter item.
This year, the Meath Park School Community Council (SCC) is supporting the integration of technology within our school’s
classrooms. They would like to purchase items for the school and classrooms that help teachers use technology to their
advantage. The purchase of items such as SMART Boards, scanners, and document cameras are just some examples.
They will do various fundraisers throughout the school year to help in supporting this goal.
Communication Plan
This Learning Improvement Plan will be shared with the Board of Education, school staff and the School Community
Council. Copies are available from the school, the Education Centre and online at
Programs and Services
Overview of Curricular Courses and Programs
The Early Literacy Project
Teachers of students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 are involved in the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division Early Literacy
Project. Teachers in this project concern themselves with three questions about student literacy:
1. What do we want students to learn?
2. How will we know when the students have learned it?
3. What are the acceptable levels of mastery?
Currently seventy-two teachers are involved in the project and they are supported by two (2) literacy coaches, an Integrated
Learning Consultant and the school division’s team of Speech and Language Pathologists.
Literacy in Action
Grades 4 to 6 teachers are involved in the Literacy in Action Project. Teachers in this project learn about the new outcomes
and indicators for English Language Arts as well as new technology standards. Additionally, teachers explore ways in which
to support student learning through integrating technology and English Language Arts.
Fine Arts
Along with visual arts and drama, Meath Park School has an extensive band program involving students from Grades 6 to
12.
Math Technology Team
Staff members on the Math Technology Team incorporate technology in the Grade 3 and 6 math program.
Practical and Applied Arts
High School students at Meath Park School may choose from a variety of Practical and Applied Arts courses. Depending on
student interest, options include Home Economics, Food Design, Industrial Arts, Construction, Information Processing,
Career and Work Exploration, and Land Systems.
Our Caring and Respectful School Environment
Character Education
Meath Park School focuses on six virtues each school year. Kindergarten to Grade 6 students and staff will focus on the
themes of honesty, self-worth and respect. Grade 7 to 12 students and staff will concentrate on integrity, leadership and
student laptops available for portable classroom use. Every classroom in the school is equipped with a SmartBoard and a
soundfield system.
Student Leadership Opportunities
Our grade 6 students take part in a program called "Take The Lead". We then offer them opportunities to experience
leadership roles. Our grade 7-8 students take part in a classroom leadership role at lunch time for our K-3 students. Meath
Park School also has a very productive student leadership council that provides many experiences for students to enjoy
throughout the year.
Out-of-School Educational Experiences
Every classroom teacher gives their students an out of school education experience throughout the school year. We also
provide many career opportunities for our high school students. As well our K-6 students experience a yearly "wave pool"
trip to Melfort Saskatchewan.
Our school also has a TAG program (teen adventure group) that offers out of school experiences to our grade 8 and 9
students.
The Smeaton Detachment of the RCMP provides an officer who visits the school periodically. This program allows the
police and students to interact on a more informal basis. Additionally, Grade 6 students work with a constable on the
D.A.R.E. Program on an annual basis. D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is an international program offered to
youth by police forces across North America.
Educational Support
Students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 benefit from an Educational Support Program that provides assistance in meeting
students’ academic and behavioural needs.
Counseling
Meath Park School has an in-school career/guidance counselor. Also, a counselor/outreach worker from the Prince Albert
Parkland Health Region is available to support students, staff, parents and community members five days a week.
Staff Learning Initiatives
Every staff member in our building belongs to a professional learning community group. This group has built in planning
time in every one of their schedules. The group meets once in a six day cycle for 30 minutes. The group must focus on
creating an individual professional growth plan that contains a smart goal that is results based oriented and linked to the
area of literacy or mathematics. The second focus of the group is to individually plan one unit of study using the UBD
template. This will involve unpacking the curriculums outcomes and indicators.
The K-12 staff is also involved in creating a school assessment policy.
We also have staff taking part in many UBD sessions sponsored by the school division.
