BUTLER Two-Frequency Hybrid Locomotive
for freight and shunting services
In July 2010, SBB Cargo placed the order for 30 Eem 923 hybrid locomotives
from the Eem 2/2 vehicle series to cover traction requirements for
shunting and freight train line services. They will be delivered in 2012 and
2013. The hybrid vehicle is a compact locomotive which can be operated
under a contact wire at either 15 kV/16.7 Hz or 25 kV/50 Hz. It is also
capable of operating without contact wire in order to travel the «last mile»
without loss of tractive power. With its bulk power of 1,500 kW, a maximum
speed of 120 km/h and the option of of multiple-unit operation with
up to four units, the Eem 923 is suitable both for line and for shunting
services. The Eem 923 is mainly operated with power supply via contact
wire. This makes it very economical in terms of consumption. It is also lowmaintenance,
which ensures high levels of availability and a long service life.
Technical features
Vehicle data
• High electric power output and tractive power
• Air-conditioned driver’s cab featuring excellent visibility for
shunting
• Economic power consumption, long maintenance intervals and
thus high levels of availability thanks to primarily electric traction
• Maximum speed of 120 km/h and option of multiple-unit
operation with several vehicles means it is suitable both for
shunting and for line services
• Non-wearing electric brake with braking energy fed back into
the contact cable system (recuperation) or by means of brake
resistors in diesel mode
• Pneumatic brakes: indirect brake for carriage and direct brake
for locomotive
• Powerful screw-type compressor with an output of 2,400 l/min
• Vehicle control system with train bus, vehicle bus and diagnostics
computer
• Highly effective IGBT electric-power converter
• Train control systems: Integra and ZUB 262ct with Eurobalise.
ETCS L2 or Indusi available as options
• Multiple-unit opertation with up to four units
• Remote control: radio control in multiple-unit mode (optional)
