The German Shooting Sports Federation 

(DSB) and its responsible national 

trainers were not disappointed when 

this successful sports shooter, whose 

friends all call her Munkhi, a nickname 

which is no doubt familiar to our readers, 

acquired her German passport in 2002. 

By then Munkhbayar had already won 

several international titles and was 

considered one of the world’s outstanding 

pistolwomen. The trainers had no need 

to give Munkhbayar any sort of advanced 

training or to polish up her natural skills. 

Hence, the DSB benefited from both 

sides of the Mongolian shooter’s earlier 

experience as a successful sports 

competitor. This can also be seen from 

the series of medals which Munkhbayar 

SSP 

won dressed in the uniform of the 

German National Team (3 ECH singles 

medals, one World Championship and 

World Cup triumphs).

talent and her special feel for the sport 

and supported Munkhbayar from the 

very outset. For example, her ability to 

win a couple of world cup competitions 

and several Asian championships back 

in the early nineties using the WALTHER 

CP-3 CO2 air pistol, which is a relic by 

today’s standards, and today continues 

to shoot with the Lupis manufactured by 

WALTHER (currently the LP300XT). 

Munkhbayar, a Mongol who studied in 

Germany and has lived here since 1995, 

celebrated her greatest successes as an 

Asian sports shooter in Barcelona: the 

bronze medal at the Olympic Games in 

1992 shooting the sports pistol and at the 

World Cup with the Lupi in 1998. 

In the sports pistol discipline the sports 

shooter also picked the GSP which 

served her well thanks to its simplicity 

and reliability, although more modern 

models by other makers must have 

attracted her attention. Despite all those 

who advised her that the GSP is an 

“antiquated” sports pistol, she went on 

to win the title for Germany with this 

model in 2002 at the World 

Championship held in Lathi, 

proving once again that the 

GSP still ranks among the 

competition-quality firearms 

and that you need something 

more than merely the latest 

development in your gun 

case. 

Last year, however, Ulan 

Bator, a sports shooter born 

in 1969, won the silver medal 

in the women’s sports pistol 

competition with the SSP, 

WALTHER’s long-awaited 

successor to the GSP. Why 

does such an experienced 

sports shooter change weapons in the 

middle of training for the Olympic Games 

in Peking? She could have done this 

earlier (see above). After all, during this 

tense phase qualifying positions have

to be won and trainers are already 

spending a great deal of time separating 

out the athletes which they can turn into 

a good team for the Games. At this point 

poor results could preclude the decision 

for 2008. 

Munkhbayar dared to make the risky 

change because, from her perspective, 

the SSP had more to offer than previous 

firearms. The SSP has the maximum 

barrel length according to the rules of 

the sport which guarantees the highest 

degree of precision, is very compact and 

light-weight and includes 

so many technological 

improvements that 

Munkhbayar could simply 

not turn down the opportunity 

to test the “piece” despite 

the crucial forthcoming 

matches. Although watched 

carefully by the coaches, 

the German soldier decided 

for this weapon since, 

from her point of view, 

despite the normal teething 

troubles, the technological 

innovations also provided 

many advantages which 

made themselves felt when 

shooting. 

Of course, Munkhbayar is not only 

a role model for the German sports 

shooters, the lean athlete is also admired 

internationally as well. Which is why her 

immediately successful switch from one 

gun to another was quickly noticed. 

Interest in the SSP rose immediately. 

This started a run on the new sports 

pistol, especially among the sports 

shooters from Mongolia, with whom 

Munkhbayar naturally still maintains 

very close ties. Many women sports 

shooters in the national team switched 

and immediately pocketed two silver 

medals at the Asian championships in 

Kuwait in December 2007. Among them 

was the well-known Gundegma Otryad, 

pictured below, who after all holds third 

place in the world ranking of sports pistol 

she did it just four weeks prior to the 

Asian championships. Also a bold move, 

but successful as well. However, her 

decision was supported by her trainer 

so she would have not stood alone if her 

score had been poor. 

We at WALTHER are very proud to 

have the opportunity to work together 

with athletes and personalities such as 

these. When all is said and done, since 

this cooperation also contributes to the 

process of improving and perfecting 

our sports weapons, you, the sports 

shooters, should also benefit from it.

Dear Readers, 

It has now been roughly six 

months since I took over as 

Chief of Engineering for all 

the engineering work done at 

WALTHER. 

As a former ordnance engineering 

officer and enthusiastic 

sports shooter I am not new to 

the firearms industry. Moreover, 

I can draw on several years of 

career experience in various 

executive functions in serial 

manufacturing at a major automotive 

supplier. 

Even if our weapons in terms 

of quantities do not really compare 

with the serial production 

figures of the automotive industry, 

there are still a number of 

things worth transferring. And 

the goal of all this is to make 

our firearms just that little bit 

better and by means of innovations 

-such as the Anatomic 

stock- to help shooters improve 

their performance. 

We are working intensively on 

new products, but also on new 

production processes and have 

planned a number of surprises, 

both big and small, for the near 

future. 

Perhaps reading the NEWS will 

shorten somewhat the waiting 

time until the next big surprise.

More successful than ever 

Mathew Emmons had no doubt expected 

it, but believing in it was not quite so appropriate. 

He was a participant at this 

year‘s International Air Gun Competition 

in Munich which for many years 

has been organized by the Bavarian 

Association of Sports Shooters (BSSB) 

and over the years has become the 

pre-season indicator of the international 

sports shooting scene. For this event 

gives shooters the opportunity to show 

what sort of performance levels are possible 

in air gun disciplines. Emmons, the 

winner at the Olympics in Athens who 

failed to achieve the double Olympic victory 

due to a mishap, shot a score of 597 

points here in the men‘s qualifying round 

with an air rifle. Super! But not enough 

to reach the final of the best 8. He could 

only watch how the others with the same 

number of points moved on to the finals 

and thus to the chance of stepping up 

onto one of the podium‘s levels. 

Among the women, 11 starters suffered 

the same fate although they scored an 

impressive 397 points. They also lost the 

chance to catch up by another point or 

two in the finals to the leaders who also 

nearly shot perfect scores at the event. 

There is no other competition in the 

world at this level of performance. No 

World Cup or International Championship 

is anywhere near like it. They may 

have good individual scores, but never 

this many of them. 

These extreme results were only made 

possible under the conditions of aboveaverage 

skills developed by the hard 

work of the shooters and the perfect 

materials provided by the outfitters. 

That is why we as manufacturers see 

such events not only as interesting 

sports competitions but also as yardsticks. 

We analyze these competitions

from this second perspective by asking 

questions such as: “What is possible?”, 

“Where do we stand?”, or “What must be 

improved?”. 

Our conclusion afterwards: “WALTHER 

shooters” not only keep up with the 

level of performance, they determine to 

a large extent the course of the finals. It 

is difficult to briefly summarize the events 

at the 2008 competition in Munich but we 

will have a go at it: 

The young Sergy Rikhter from Israel 

made his first international appearance 

with his WALTHER LG300XT in the air 

rifle competition for junior men and won 

the first competition (of 2) with a score of 

595. In the final, this outcome was nearly 

too close to believe. Because with 100.6 

points in the final Rikhter was just able to 

hold onto his two point lead ahead of the 

competition. The “hunters” down to fifth 

place were all within 0.9 points of his top 

score. Among them Henry Junghänel, 

who took third place with 593 and 102.3 

points. 

But the German wanted to stand on 

the top level of the podium and was 

able to do that after the second match 

with 596 points. Great performances by 

the juniors! Both shot an LG300XT 

Alutec. Sergy Rikhter has only used 

it for a couple of months, Henry for a 

couple of years. 

What’s more, the chance that a junior 

would win both matches with a 

WALTHER air rifle was fairly good in 

both stages. After the first match, four 

LG300s were in the final and, in the 

second, there were altogether five. A 

reminder: The final round only includes 

the eight best shooters emerging from 

the qualification round. 

But among the women Juniors as well 

one shooter from Finland showed that 

she did not become European Champion 

in Granada last year by accident. 

Tiia Törmälä repeated her 399 points 

she already scored in early January at 

the IWC Sweden and easily won the 

junior women’s competition. Her score of 

500.9 at the end of the final would have 

good enough for a third place ranking

in the women’s event, and not because 

they had shot so poorly. Tiia switched to 

the LG300XT Carbontec just three 

months ago! 

Here too, there were three WALTHER 

shooters in each final, a good percentage 

from our perspective as well. 

The final rounds for the men revealed 

a similar situation. After the first match, 

four WALTHER shooters entered the 

final round. The Russian Denis Sokolov, 

overall world cup winner in 2006, also 

won against the Indian Gagan Narang. 

For the second round, three shooters 

managed the difficult task of qualifying 

for the final round with our weapons. 

The Austrian Mario Knögler, once again 

Denis Sokolov and also Peter Sidi from 

Hungary, who with 597 and 599 points 

handled his Carbontec in both starts 

extremely well. No shooter at the event 

displayed similar self-assurance. 

By comparison, among the women, our 

participants in the finals, each making up 

25% of the field, was not so outstanding. 

But, honestly, four or five years ago we 

would have been very happy with that. 

But we believe that we will also see more 

women qualifying for finals in the future 

as well. 

It was great for us to note: A few also 

appeared with the latest variant of 

the LG300XT, the Anatomic. And 

although these shooters were not in 

the final round in Munich, they praised 

the weapon to us during face-to-fact 

discussions at the service stand. The 

general tenor of the shooters’ feedback: 

The Anatomic stock combines the 

advantages of the system’s wood frame 

with the advantages of an adjustable 

aluminum or carbon stock. Besides, it

was kept very short, when extremely 

set shorter than our current junior stock. 

This is something pros appreciate, especially 

women and many of the top men’s 

shooters ordered the new innovation immediately 

on site. So we seem to have 

hit a nerve once again as we did two 

years ago with the carbon stock. Many 

wood stock shooters who to date have 

hesitated to try out new weapons since 

most of them were not very innovative in 

relation to the wood stock, are now thinking 

about giving it a go after having seen 

the Anatomic. 

So they still have a wood stock, with all 

the advantages they expect from it and 

the additional options of the many possible 

adjustments. And the 300erXT 

system in it is certainly well established 

and well above any doubts. 

So we left the International World Cup 

in Munich with generally positive results. 

But we also recognize potential 

for improvements which we also want 

to exploit. Despite the results achieved 

in Munich and the status of our top air 

rifles among shooters, what counts is not 

to lose ground. There is no reason that 

should happen. For the moment, at least, 

we were still pleased. 

Besides, anyone who buys an 

LG300XT, no matter what the stock, 

purchases the same “machine”. The 

LG300XT differs in its many variations 

LG300XT Protouch 

only in the stock and in the complete 

sight system which is always included 

in the package. For example, the gun 

club shooter shoots with the LG300XT 

Universal the identically designed 

system (trigger, absorber, pressure reducer, 

breech, etc.), such as for example 

Mr. Sidi. Not a slimmed down version! 

That all LG300s are supplied with a 

solid gun case has been accepted standard 

for us now for at least a decade. 

The accessories which are supplied with 

the gun are so complete that when the 

package is opened on the target range 

nothing is missing. You only have to fill 

and you are ready to shoot. Some 

people will even be surprised by what 

is already included to try out (weights, 

sights, etc.) beyond what involves normal 

shooting. Have a look into the big 

WALTHER gun case! 

Besides the development of the 

LG300XT Carbontec 

Anatomic we have also redesigned our 

Alutec. For example, the cheek-adjuster 

comes from the Carbontec, the stock’s 

back-end was also shortened, and the 

fore-end was modified and completely 

re-styled. This produced the LG300XT 

Protouch with its anti-slip coating, a 

LG300XT Universal 

centra „Block Club“ 

included at Protouch 

and Anatomic 

LG300XT Anatomic 

real eye-catcher. Both new air rifle variants 

are also fitted as a standard with an 

included centra sight elevation. With the 

“Block Club” you can not only elevate the 

line of sight to various levels, you can 

also adjust it laterally for windage. 

Thus, we now offer 7 variants of the 

LG300XT for standing, free-hand 

shooting in our catalog. These do not 

include the nonstandard models which 

are repeatedly offered and the special 

models for bench shooting. This ought to 

provide something to meet any requirements. 

But we will no doubt come up with 

something else as well.

A bit of recent 

history... 

In sports shooting something 

has become possible which has 

been around in professional soccer 

for some time: a sports facility 

has been given a company 

name, the WALTHER Arena. 

Since November 24th, 2007, that 

is the new name of what used to 

be called the „Sports Shooting 

Center“ in Berlin-Altglienicke. 

The current arena is the home 

of the five-time national league 

champions, the Adlerhofer Füchsen, 

whose members include 

the famous shooters Uwe Potteck 

and Gernot Eder. 

About six months prior to this, 

PSV Olympia Berlin gun club 

and the Berlin City Council 

started talks about the name of 

the newly constructed complex. 

Since PSV Olympia Berlin in 

its club history was always 

able to rely on the support of 

WALTHER’s top management 

the club’s members wasted little 

time wondering what the name 

should be. The club approached 

the Carl WALTHER company’s 

management in Ulm with the 

suggestion that the new modern 

shooting range be called the 

“WALTHER Arena”. For the upcoming 

German Championship 

in Munich in August 2007, the 

continued co-operation, raised 

to a new level, was agreed was 

a hand-shake. 

Then the preparation began for 

a day celebrating the new name. 

Those present quickly agreed 

to hold the event at the same 

time as the national league 

home match of the Adlershofer 

Füchse. So the celebration on 

November 24th, 2007 was a 

complete success. Not only 

did the LP team win the home 

match, the subsequent unveiling 

of the impressive new lettering 

on the building, designed by 

Mike Hecker, deeply impressed 

all those present. Sponsored 

by the municipal committee 

responsible for sports in the 

district of Treptow-Köpenick, 

Mr. Simdorn, and many other 

guests, this new chapter in the 

still short history of this shooting 

sports facility was opened 

accompanied by sparkling wine. 

As indicated above, WALTHER 

has cultivated good contacts 

with PSV Olympia Berlin for 

many years now. A great deal 

of support was provided by the 

Ulm based company in terms of 

material and service, especially 

for attracting younger shooters 

to the sport, which is one focus 

of the club’s activity. This is the 

club’s way of returning the favor. 

That we continue to assure PSV 

Olympia of our support is clear 

and that we are very pleased 

about this gesture certainly 

needs no special emphasis on 

our part.

As in other companies with long 

histories, at Carl WALTHER 

people are also remembered 

who made special contributions 

to the company. In our company 

a bust of Fritz Walter is exhibited. 

But some may ask, why 

Fritz and not the company‘s 

founder, Carl Walther? 

The enormous importance of 

Fritz Walther for his father’s 

company will not have escaped 

anyone who has carefully read 

the two history articles in the 

previous and the current issues 

of “WALTHER News”. 

Of course, it is a fact that Carl 

Walther turned his business 

idea into a reality. He had the 

courage of the entrepreneur, 

certainly exposed himself to a 

few risks, and we owe the beginning 

of our company to him. 

But Fritz Walther was the one 

who convinced his father to produce 

more promising products 

such as the pocket pistol. These 

small pistols and their improved 

models would soon provide the 

foundation of WALTHER’s success 

story and comprise the 

major share of the company’s 

business over the decades. 

But his more important achievement 

was how, after the unexpected 

death of his father, he 

led the company through two 

world wars and─what was 

certainly more difficult─through 

the great depression at the end 

of the 1920s as well. Surviving 

the ups and downs of these 

periods, which business plans 

could not sadly always predict 

and which had their roots in political 

developments impervious 

to any influence, not losing sight 

of the WALTHER company’s 

dreams and goals, commands 

our respect. This is how Fritz 

Walther certainly rendered outstanding 

service to his father’s 

company. That is what we today 

call genuine management, 

facing all the challenges while 

keeping in mind the interests of 

all the company’s stakeholders. 

This standpoint, and the courage 

that it frequently necessitated, 

is therefore honored by 

us in this special way by the 

placement of this bust.

History of the WALTHER corporation 

The Walther family moved to Swabia. 

At his own risk, Fritz Walther was able 

to bring his money and drawings for 

the calculators into safekeeping from 

the invading Allies. These were meant 

to be an initial contribution to assuring 

the existence of WALTHER since the 

manufacture and sales of weapons after 

the war would be understandably highly 

regulated by the occupiers. Even if sales 

of these mechanical calculators were 

initially extremely slow, WALTHER once 

again had 22 employees in Heidenheim 

as early as 1947. Most of them had followed 

the Walther family from Thuringia. 

In 1948, the company moved to Niederstotzingen 

and celebrated shortly 

thereafter the manufacture of the 1,000 th 

machine. The worst period after the war 

was over, and in 1950 WALTHER was 

exporting to over 40 countries. 

But the Walther family never lost sight 

of gun manufacturing. Since weapons 

powered by air pressure were viewed by 

the western Allies as toys, the production 

of the first air rifles began in 1950. At that 

time the barrels were still smoothbore. 

The purchase of these sports air rifles 

was unregulated and since many new 

shooting clubs were in the process of 

reforming or being founded, demand for 

the WALTHER air rifle grew. The produc- 

tion halls once again filled with machines 

and people. 

Since the production of police pistols 

was still strictly regulated, WALTHER 

licensed out the production of the PP 

and the PPK to the French company 

Manurhin in Alsace in 1952. The pistol 

recognized for Olympic competition–the 

first one designed especially for the 

needs of sports shooters–the small-bore 

pistol, with which the shooters won the 

New building in Ulm North 

first five places at the Berlin Olympics 

in 1936, was produced under license by 

Hämmerli in Switzerland. 

The regulations regarding manufacture 

and ownership of guns in the young 

Federal Republic were relaxed, which 

helped WALTHER immensely to establish 

itself in the international consumer 

market as well with small bore rifles 

and semiautomatics. WALTHER grew 

steadily and already had 200 employees 

again when the company moved into 

a new building complete at their Ulm/ 

Karlstrasse location and was awarded 

the contract to supply the German military 

with the P38. At this point the postwar 

turbulence had been seen through 

and the company had been returned to 

its pre-war situation. 

Fritz Walther, who had led the company 

for over 40 years, died in 1966. The management 

was taken over by his son Karl- 

Heinz, a part-owner of the company, who 

was especially responsible for promoting 

the production of firearms for sports. The

GSP and the OSP, which can already 

be considered standard sports pistols, 

were developed in indirect response to 

his influence as a sports shooter. At the 

time, the LGR air rifle dominated the 

market and the winners‘ podiums as the 

first with single-stroke pneumatic action. 

In 1970, he was able to look back on a 

broad range of products manufactured 

under the WALTHER name. WALTHER 

Büromaschinen GmbH in Niederstotzingen 

and Gerstetten, WALTHER 

Elektronik GmbH in Ulm, WALTHER 

Feinmechanik GmbH in Königsbronn, 

and the hunting and sports firearms factory 

in Ulm. 

However, in the early 70s demand for 

calculators collapsed. The Federal 

Republic found itself in the midst of a 

recession and even the new firearms 

law in 1972 contributed to the sliding 

gun sales. In 1974, WALTHER suffered 

a serious crisis which, however, it was 

able once again to avert. When in the 

late 80s the government orders for the 

P38 and the P5 ran out and the P88 

did not manage to break into this market, 

the company had to be slimmed down, 

a process which impacted every one of 

the company‘s segments. To the delight 

of competitors, the discontinuation of the 

free pistols was followed by the end of 

small-bore rifle production, which had 

an enormous impact. After all, Macholm 

Cooper had won the Olympic gold medal 

in the 3x40 men‘s competition with the 

WALTHER KK-UIT in 1984 and 1988. 

Was that supposed to be over for the 

moment? 

In 1993, UMAREX in Arnsberg, whose 

managing directors were the share- 

holders Wulf-Heinz Pflaumer and Franz 

Wonisch bought 90% of the WALTHER 

shares and invested 10 million marks into 

the sports firearms segment. WALTHER 

was again returned to its former strength 

and produced new, trend-setting models 

of all types of sports firearms. Immediately, 

the number of European and world 

champions using WALTHER firearms 

once again increased. Whether they 

used the LP200 air pistol, the LGM2 

air rifle, the redesigned GSP and OSP 

and, of course, the first KK200 Power 

Match equipped with an aluminum stock 

as a standard, WALTHER showed that 

the company was once again a force to 

be reckoned with. 

In the firearms market for public officials, 

WALTHER was able to beat competitors 

with the modern, hammerless P99, 

which brought about the breakthrough 

in the consumer market, especially in 

the USA. 

The production building in the Karlstrasse 

in Ulm, already in use for 50 years, no 

longer provided sufficient capacities and 

P99 

was not able to meet the latest standards 

of modern manufacturing. That is why 

WALTHER decided, under the leadership 

of the new owners, to build a production 

complex designed to meet the needs of 

a facility for the production of precision 

firearms for sports and government bodies 

on previously undeveloped land. In 

2005, the move was made to the new 

location in Ulm‘s Industrial Park North 

where the ideal conditions were created 

for the company‘s future growth. 

With the takeover of Hämmerli, whose 

products are now made in Ulm, WAL- 

THER once again strengthened the 

sports firearms sector which has been 

expanding especially since the 90s. A 

new, successful period for WALTHER 

with many opportunities in many fields 

has started. This is why WALTHER looks 

with hope towards a successful future.

In 1829, in Schönebeck/Elbe, a 

company for the manufacture of 

percussion caps was founded by the 

businessmen Louis Sellier and Nicolaus 

Bellot. 

Over the course of the next 179 years 

the company grew to become an important 

ammunition manufacturer. 

The Finnish company LAPUA OY 

purchased the Schönebecker ammunition 

plant in 1992, which successfully 

continued the production of the 

established brand SK and continued 

to develop it. 

The manufacture of high-quality and 

perfectly matched small-caliber ammunition 

begins with a ring of brass, 

about the width of a hand, for the production 

of the shells. Over the course 

of several different work steps this is 

formed into a shiny gold shell whose 

head is stamped with the internation- 

ally familiar LAPUA and SK symbol 

or text. 

In a high-tech procedure, using the 

very latest testing and measuring 

methods, the priming charging are 

put into the previously manufactured 

shells. 

The second highly specialized as well 

as especially important production 

process begins with the melting of 

the extremely heavy lead bars whose 

purity is nearly 100 percent. 

The lead wire produced from the melt 

is transformed step by step into small,

still inconspicuous bullet blanks. 

Then they are pressed into bullets 

and placed on the charged sleeves 

which have already been filled with 

powder. Today, LAPUA GmbH is one 

of the most important producers of 

hunting and small caliber ammunition. 

With the commissioning of a system 

especially developed for high-performance 

market, special products were 

developed especially for small-caliber 

sports shooting which guarantee new 

dimensions in marksmanship performance 

and accuracy. 

Best material characteristics and 

the use of the latest technologies 

combined with many years of experience 

and expertise assure the perfect 

characteristics of the proven SK cartridges 

and the new LAPUA precision 

products. 

The new X-ACT, definitely the best 

cartridge, is produced using microprocessor-controlled 

production stages 

adhering to the most sophisticated 

quality conditions, just like the new 

Midas +, Center X, Polar Biathlon, 

Pistol King and Pistol OSP. 

When in-house comparison tests 

were conducted using the various 

barrel variants of all the most important 

sports firearms makers, marksmanship 

performance achieved in the 

past was not only clearly improved but 

also constantly and clearly confirmed.

Q: Peter, recently you visited LAPUA 

for the ammunition test. Was the 

over 1,000 kilometer journey to 

Schönebeck worth the trouble? 

A: The customer shooting range is really 

very well equipped with the latest 

technology. The mounting options, the 

measurement system and the facilities 

are perfect. 

Q: And what do you think of the selection 

of ammunition? 

A: I had the opportunity to select from a 

wide variety of batches. So that I would 

not have to try out all of them, Heiko 

and Andreas had already pre-selected 

a few batches in advance. After intensive 

testing we took a short break and 

Heiko introduced me to Gerald Fetz, 

LAPUA’s managing director. And he 

had another surprise ready for me ... 

Q: We hope it was a pleasant surprise 

... 

A: Yes, it was. I was asked whether 

I would like to test a completely new 

small-caliber ammunition. They had 

also picked me out from among a few 

world-class shooters. That sounded interesting 

and I was especially curious 

how the new ammunition would work 

with my WALTHER barrel. 

Q: And which new ammunition did 

you then test? 

A: Well, now I can talk about it because 

the ammunition was officially introduced 

at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas 

and at the IWA in Nurnberg. Before 

that everything was highly confidential, 

I did not even see the new packaging. 

And the new names were not revealed 

to me either ... 

Q: But you were allowed to shoot ... 

A: Yes, of course. I was really convinced 

that LAPUA has improved 

substantially! First I was given the 

new Midas +, which was described to 

me as an improvement on the Midas. 

That immediately made me curious. 

The ammunition flew well and the shot 

patterns were better than anything 

previous. Somehow I had understand, 

however that this was not everything. 

Heiko had let slip a hint ... 

Q: Sounds very mysterious. What 

was next? 

A: Then Heiko brought another two 

boxes. White boxes! On the sides were 

just a couple of numbers. Something 

completely new! We quickly got back 

down to business and I thought these 

shot patterns were really absolutely 

convincing. The shot patterns were 

fantastic. 

Q: Do you now intend to use this 

ammunition in training and in Beijing? 

A: Yes, of course! I want to win ...

The lightness of aiming 

The majority of young shooters now start with 

shooting glasses made by MEC, many older 

shooters are switching to the glass system. 

Even pistol shooters and archers have discovered 

for themselves the variability of these 

glasses. The designer Udo Daniel believes the 

success of his concept is primarily due to the 

clear technical advantages of his system. It allows 

quick replacement of all the components 

and hence a maximum number of individual solutions. 

With Beta-Titan the weight of the frame 

was reduced to merely 20 grams, that is half the 

usual weight. A definite advance which has a 

substantial affect on wearing comfort. Whoever 

lives near Dortmund can make an appointment

‘Tears AGAIN’ eye spray 

Untiring sight, during the day and at the shooting 

range, is supported by the lipid spray ‘TEARS 

AGAIN’. It is simply sprayed on the closed lids, 

takes effect in four minutes and remains active 

for 4 hours. There are no side effects and it 

helps relieve many of the causes of eye strain 

such as working at monitors, reading, dry air or 

wind sensitivity. Our experiments with many top 

shooters and especially with older athletes convinced 

us to include this product in our catalog. 

The ACHILLES kneeling roll 

A foam casing in the middle of the cylinder reduces 

the pressure on the ankle noticeably, the 

filling on the outer ends provides lateral support 

to the shoe. These two effects contribute to a 

more comfortable and, primarily, firmer seat on 

the roll. This helps anyone who does not like 

kneeling shooting, whether because of the pains 

or because of poor results, to kill two birds with 

one stone. Further details, such as non-stretching 

outer skin and the slip-resistant edge top off

The variable sight lens 

Among centra’s interesting innovations is the VARI- 

OINTEGRAL. This sight tunnel contains an optical 

system which is continuously adjustable from 0.1 

- 0.5 diopters. This permits shooters (seniors, older 

than 46 years) to adjust the magnification in a single 

turn to their own needs and how they feel that day or 

to the lighting conditions. 

The short design permits the mounting of any sights, 

even variable designs, without exceeding the approved 

overall length of the sight tunnel of 50mm. 

This makes the Variointegral at present the best and 

most flexible sight lens for age groups and for all

CHEEK: laterally adjustable within millimeterprecision 

New and really useful is the cheek-piece, named 

CHEEK, by centra, which permits a fine lateral adjustment. 

With the help of an outer setting screw the 

cheek is moved precisely to the left or right. That can 

be done when the gun is in shooting position so that 

the shooter can bring his eye precisely into line with 

the iris opening. Because the position of the head, 

especially the position of the eye, is a highly sensitive 

building block of the aiming position, this function has 

been welcomed by all testers. Merely several clicks 

on the diopter theoretically require a readjustment of 

the cheek. Using the CHEEK this can be done immediately 

and with extreme precision. 

Even the form and the material of the cheek piece 

have been carefully thought through. For this purpose 

an aluminium form part is bent to form an 

ergonomically perfect match to the face. The profile 

is coated with a paint which is not too rough, which 

prevents hypothermia and, at the same time, provides 

good contact. Bench-rest shooters can shift the cheek 

towards the butt-plater. 

Originally this cheek was developed for the stock of 

the MARK 1 by MEC. Now, it can also be attached 

with the help of an adapter to existing air-rifle and 

small-bore rifle stocks by WALTHER, Anschütz and 

Feinwerkbau. This also provides a clearly new lateral 

adjustment option.

ECH Winterthur - 600 are not enough 

The air-powered firearms ECH in 

Winterthur/Switzerland, as one of the 

final continental championships before 

the Olympic Games in Beijing, put the 

European elite to the test. What the 

audience in Switzerland ─ a country also 

known for its shooting sports ─ was privileged 

to see was more than a foretaste 

of the skill level and the kind of close 

calls behind the awards of medals in the 

sport of shooting. 

On the first day, however, this ECH 

Vladyslav Prianishenkov - UKR 

began with a new world record, which 

was set in a discipline which sadly will 

no longer be part of the Olympic program 

in 2008. In the running target mixed 

competition, the Ukrainian Vladyslav 

Prianishenkov broke the world record set 

by Manfred Kurzer by two full points and 

won the European Championship title, 

ahead of Sweden’s Niclas Bergström 

who also put his confidence in the WAL- 

THER LG300. But this was not to be 

his only title in Switzerland. In the „normal“ 

running target competition he again 

showed his form and won gold there 

as well. What‘s more, together with his 

two (WALTHER) teammates Alexander 

Zinenko and Andrey Gilchenko, he was 

also able to include each of his scores in 

the team evaluation as well. And here too 

a world record was set! This is how he 

won gold with his LG300XT 4xEM! 

But now about the headline ... 

That the qualification round no longer 

decides who will stand on which podium 

levels is something everyone knows 

since the introduction of the final round. 

The audiences tensely follow what the 

final decision will be during the final 

shots. 

Even the dream score of 600 points, 

short by Denis Sokolov from Russia 

with his Alutec in the qualifying round fell 

short of the mark in the end. He had with 

this 10 meter show a three point lead 

ahead of the next contestant but which 

he was unable to hold in the final round. 

Sokolov came in fourth! Together with 

Konstantin Prichotschenko, last year’s 

European champion, and Sergey Kruglov 

took the team gold medal that just 

must have been a small consolation. 

For WALTHER fans this “full-house” was 

not only a pleasant result, but also that

once again half of the contestants in the 

final round placed their confidence in the 

LG300XT as well. 

Among the women it was the same story. 

Poland’s Agnieszka Staron led after the 

qualifying round with 399 points, which 

was also judged as excellent. At the 

end this “only” brought her fifth place. 

The winner was the Olympic champion 

of 2004 Lioubov Galkina (WALTHER 

shooter of many years), who decided 

the closely contested match by gilding 

her 398 points with another 104.4 points 

in the final round. After the WC title of 

2006, that was another one of those

unparalleled triumphs. Six weeks previously 

Galkina had given birth to her first 

child and was hence certainly not optimally 

prepared for a ECH. 

Among the juniors, Dariya Sharipova 

from the Ukraine shot for this class a 

superb 399 points with her LG300 

Alutec and was not so pleased about 

her silver medal after the final round. She 

too found it impossible to defend her lead 

as even among the juniors the scores 

are already very close together. 

Henry Junghänel, on the other hand, 

was pleased after the qualifying round to 

again have a chance to compete against 

the leaders. He then also improved his 

performance from a thankless fourth 

place to second place, which better reflects 

his performance level, a foretaste

of which he provided at the Munich IWC 

in January. In this final, by the way, there 

were no fewer than 5 WALTHER shooters. 

In all these final rounds, the places were 

mere tenths of a point apart. No rifle 

shooter is able to take a commanding 

lead anymore! One should remember 

that this is not a question of a prone competition. 

This year will be really exciting, 

especially because the standing position 

is the least stable rifle position and one 

can expect anything in the final round.

also be considered as a strong final 

showing with her LP300XT in the junior

competition. With an outstanding score 

of 102.0 points for air pistol she shot her 

way from 6th to 2nd place and overtook 

Aleksandra Ristovic from Serbia who 

came in third with her WALTHER. 

Before we come to the end: We would 

especially like to congratulate our colleague, 

the current German Champion 

with the Lupi, Sebastian Rosner, on his 

silver in the team score. The Germans 

were second here behind the nearly 

unbeatable Russians around the World 

Cup final champion of 2007, Vladimir

Isakov. In this match the German team 

did its very best.
