Business analysts have expressed scepticism regarding the ability of polymer OLED technology to make headway against this competition. CDT’s stock may also be a victim of bad timing. Many analysts categorized CDT as a nanotechnology player and drew parallels with Nanosys – the Californian start-up that attracted intense and unflattering media attention when it cancelled its IPO in August 2004, a few days after CDT announced its plans to go public. At present, investors seem to have little enthusiasm for nanotechnology stocks: the Merrill Lynch Nanotech Index and the Punk Ziegel Nanotechnology Index both declined in 2004 and neither has improved in 2005. CDT’s 2004 annual report describes its investment risks in some detail and gives an overview of the company’s financial performance to date. Much of the information is enough to make potential investors pause for thought, but also provides some grounds for optimism about CDT. Commercial products Several commercial products containing small monochrome displays based on CDT’s licensed OLED technology have already entered the market, including a mobile phone and an electric shaver by Philips, plus an MP3 player with a Delta Optoelectronics display. What’s more, CDT’s progress in significantly extending the lifetime of green, red, blue, orange and yellow LEPs could also mean that fullcolour commercial displays may not be far behind (see table, left). A number of CDT’s licensees have already demonstrated larger, full-colour displays using polymer- OLED technology. Recent demonstrations include 40 and 12.5 inch displays by Seiko Epson and a 13 inch display by Philips. If polymer OLED technology is successful, CDT and its shareholders will be the lucky beneficiaries.
