Multimode fibre
IRphotonics
IRphotonics, a Canadian supplier of mid-infrared
optical materials, has introduced a multimode
fibre dubbed XTEND-FiBER that is said to offer a
smooth transmission window from 300 to
5500 nm. The firm uses a proprietary chemical
composition and patented manufacturing
process to extend the product’s spectral range
by more than 1 µm in the mid-infrared region,
compared with other fibres.

Imaging spectrometer
Princeton Instruments
The MicroSpec series
of imaging
spectrometers from
Princeton Instruments
and Acton Research is
designed for microspectroscopy
applications. The
product uses a fully
reflective design that
eliminates the varying
effects of chromatic aberrations in transmissive
systems.
MicroSpec comes with a variety of
interchangeable wavelength-dispersion
modules and an entrance aperture, all of which
can be computer-controlled to allow
automated selection of spectral range and
resolution. The firms say the MicroSpec allows
UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopic studies in
applications such as fluorescence,
absorbance, transmission and scattering.

Motion controller
Newport
Newport has
introduced the
SMC100CC, a singleaxis
motion controller
for DC servo-motors of
up to 48 VDC at
1.5 A rms at a cost of
under 7600, including power supply.
The SMC100CC uses an integrated RS-232-C
interface or a USB port that requires an external
SMC-USB adapter for a Windows operating
system. Windows-based software supports all
configurations and enables basic motion.
Advanced application programming is
simplified by an ASCII command interface and
a set of two-letter mnemonic commands. Up to
31 controllers can be networked through the
internal RS-485 communication link. The
SMC100CC also features advanced “multiaxes”
commands, such as “stop all” or “start a
motion of all axes” and communicates at a
57 600 baud rate.

UK, has added the
FlexSeal goggle to its
range of laser-safety
eyewear from GPT
Glendale. The FlexSeal
goggle is lightweight,
fits neatly over
prescription eyewear and offers a wide field of
view. It also has a soft silicone goggle body
and an adjustable headband so that the
wearer is assured of the highest level of
comfort as well as a secure fit.
Available from stock, the FlexSeal is currently
on offer with filters for protection against
Nd:YAG, CO 2 and diode lasers. Additional filters
for other wavelengths are continually being
added to the range as they complete the
EN207 certification process.

Mid-IR OPO
Aculight
Aculight of the US has developed a fibre-laserpumped
singly resonant optical parametric
oscillator (OPO) that provides continuous tuning
in the mid-infrared wavelength range. Currently
at the prototype stage, the system has been
designed for use in absorption spectroscopy
applications such as methane gas detection.
The fibre-pumped OPO operates at room
temperature and is said to generate over 1 W of
continuously tunable output in the 2–4 µm range.
According to Aculight, this development will give
spectroscopists a tool with which to conduct a
wide variety of high-precision experiments.

FBG interrogator
FOS&S
Belgian firm FOS&S has released the
SpectralEye Interrogator 600, a hand-held
device for studying fibre Bragg gratings. Typical
applications include the monitoring of pipeline
stress, oil-well temperature and pressure, and
security fences. The SpectralEye operates
between 1527 and 1565 nm with a launch
power of 500 µW. Other features include a
wavelength accuracy of 10 pm, a resolution of
1 pm, a scan time of 1 s and a 20 dB dynamic
range. The portable devices weighs 1.3 kg and
has a battery life of 90 min.
