Sewerby Hall and Orangery
- A brief history
Sewerby Hall is situated in over fifty acres of distinguished
parkland and enjoys a unique cliff-top location with
breathtaking views across Bridlington Bay.
John Greame began building the central core of the house
immediately after purchasing the land in 1714. It is a very fine
example of an early Georgian house with nineteenthcentury
additions and its significance is underlined by
its Grade I listing.
The Greame family made this house their home
for over two centuries, with each new generation
making their mark by subsequent building phases. In
1808 work was begun on the elegant Regency bow-fronted
wings; in the 1840s, the Orangery, the famous archway, the
clock tower and the gatehouses were built, with the final
phase being the stately dining
room dating from 1890. The
house is an architectural tour of
the Georgian, Regency, Victorian
Greek Revival and High Victorian
taste and is a rewarding day out.
The house, gardens and parkland were purchased by
Bridlington Corporation in 1934. In a grand ceremony they
were officially opened to the public in 1936 by the famous
aviatrix, Amy Johnson.

Walter Goodin Above All, the Sky
Sewerby Hall is very proud to host the major exhibition:
Walter Goodin Above All, the Sky, featuring works by the artist
who was born at Hull but spent his life living and painting in
Bridlington from the late 1940s until his death in 1992.
Walter Goodin (1907-1992) is best known for his panoramic
paintings of the Wolds and the East Yorkshire coastline. This
exhibition is the first ever appraisal of his work and brings
together a selection of approximately 40 paintings and
drawings, the majority of which have never been seen in public
before. The exhibition is based on research by local art experts
Wendy Loncaster and Malcolm Shields. The show will run from
4th April until 21st May 2009.
Sewerby Hall’s Kitchens through
the Ages
Similar to the growth of the Hall over almost two centuries,
the development of Sewerby’s kitchen – the engine room of
the country house – will be explored in depth. This fascinating
exhibition which charts the kitchen’s relocation, cooking
technology and modern conveniences of the age, will run in the
ground floor corridor throughout the 2009 season.
Children’s zoo
Sewerby childrens zoo is a wonderful
collection of domestic and wild mammals,
birds that appeal to all ages. The zoo is
host to many fascinating species, some of
which are threatened. Animals include
llamas, monkeys, Cameroon sheep and
a fantastic aviary. Due to our successful
breeding programme, we are able
to accommodate an increasing
number of Humbolt penguins.
The penguin pond layout allows
you to see the penguins swimming
or sunbathing and feeding time
(3.00pm daily) is especially popular.
You can see creatures
from all over
the world
in just one
day including new arrivals of rheas, Shetland
sheep and giant rabbits. We also run a very
successful yearly animal adoptive scheme.

Golf and putting
Need some exercise? Why not try our challenging 10-hole
pitch and putt golf course. Soft undulating fairways, protected
by clusters of mature trees, waiting to catch the erring tee shot!
A testing course suitable for serious and recreational golfers.
Alternatively the whole family can enjoy the 18-hole putting green.
Children’s Parkland
educational trail
Our Parkland Trail is a fun and educational experience for
primary school aged children. The trail will take the children to
every corner of the fascinating Hall, Gardens and Zoo. On sale
in our Gift Shop.
Adventure playground
When the kids get restless there
is only one place to go – the
children’s adventure play area.
Here they can safely burn off that
excess energy. Challenging and
traditional play equipment, picnic
tables for parents with protective
flooring and in a dog-proof
perimeter fence.
The Clock Tower Tea Rooms
Open daily, The Clock Tower
Tea Rooms offers a wide
range of hand made cake,
Pastries, fresh ground coffee,
mouth watering Panini and
freshly prepared salads. So
why not sit back and relax
in the tranquil setting of
the Sewerby Gardens and
indulge yourself? The Tea Rooms also serves daily specials, offer
Hospitality catering and has adequate seating both inside and out
for you and your family to enjoy.
Alternately visit our Grab ‘n’ Go catering outlet which can be
found in the courtyard (weather permitting) for people who want
a quick snack or ice cream whilst on the go.
The Clock Tower Tea Rooms has recently been awarded the
nationally recognised Hospitality Assured award in recognition
of its service and business excellence to all service users and
has also achieved the Heartbeat award for its contribution to
providing Healthy food options to its customers.
Flamborough
lighthouse
Sewerby Hall and Gardens, in partnership
with Trinity House, now provide tours of
Flamborough Lighthouse. This imposing
structure, on the tip of Flamborough’s
distinctive headland, celebrated its 202nd
anniversary on 1st December 2008. The Lighthouse is open to
the public from Easter to mid September and can accommodate
school and group visits during the closed period. For further

Sewerby Hall owns a great collection of Amy Johnson
memorabilia, presented to Sewerby Hall by Amy’s father in
1958. The Amy Johnson room opened in 1959.
Sewerby Hall is considered to be
the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the East
Riding of Yorkshire Council. Our aim
is to promote a varied and frequently
changing programme of temporary
shows which include fine art, crafts
and historical exhibitions, set against the
backdrop of this magnificent old house.
