Remember when...
summers were hot…
mum’s picnics were the best…
sweets were bigger…?
Travel back in time on the
Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
Britain’s last remaining complete heritage
branch line runs from Keighley to Oxenhope,
along a rich seam of West Yorkshire’s rail and
cultural heritage.
Travel via Ingrow, with its award-winning Museum
of Rail Travel, and Damems, the country’s smallest
complete station (Ormston in BBC TV’s Born &
Bred series) to Oakworth, the location for the
classic 1970 The Railway Children film. Get off the
train and stretch your legs on The Railway Children
Walk linking film locations between Oxenhope,
Haworth and Oakworth.
Oakworth is a superb example of an Edwardian
station, complete with authentic advertising signs,
gas lighting and coal fires. From here ride on to
Haworth, home of the famous Brontë Family.

The line terminates 660 feet above sea level
at Oxenhope, where a collection of historic
locomotives and coaches can be inspected in the
Exhibition Shed.
Have a chat with the Driver and watch the Fireman
couple on and off the train. If you’re lucky he may
even let you have a look on the engine’s footplate.
Listen out for the Guard blowing his whistle as he
waves his green flag, telling the Driver it’s time to
go. Or just cosy up with a hot pasty or a warming
coffee in the station buffet car and watch all the
action go by.
Here at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway there
is more to do than at first meets the eye - we’re
your route to a great day out for all the family. . .
So much more
than just a train ride.

Celebrate over 40 years since
the fi lming of The Railway Children
here, at the Keighley & Worth
Valley Railway – a place many
refer to as “The Railway Children’s
Railway.”
Most of the fi lming took place in
the local area with the main bulk
taking place at Oakworth Station. Oakworth is still accessible
by train and many Railway Children Walks lead to and from it.
Why not ride down on the train and make your way back by
foot? - Or even better buy a
Day Rover ticket and take in the
Railway as the Children did all
those years ago.
Make sure you get off the
train and explore what Brontë
Country has to offer!
Ingrow Loco
Ingrow Loco is the Museum and Workshop of
the Bahamas Locomotive Society. It tells a story
of the steam locomotive and the people involved
in its manufacture, operation, and maintenance.
FREE admission with a WVR Day Rover ticket.
The Museum exhibition has been created so
you can explore how the steam locomotive
functions, and how it was built - from the
drawing board to the workshop and even to the publicity
photograph. You will also discover how the steam locomotive has
fascinated generations of children and adults alike through playing
with model railways and even the real thing!
Ingrow Museum of Rail Travel
The Museum of Rail Travel is the award-winning Museum
of the Vintage Carriages Trust. It is home to a Collection of
beautifully-restored historic railway carriages, which have been
used in over 60 television programmes and fi lms. Visitors may
sit in the carriages and be transported back in time by the
sound presentations, which help to bring the past to life. There
are video presentations, as well as numerous signs, posters and
exhibits within the Museum to keep you lost in time for hours.
FREE admission with a WVR Day Rover ticket.
Would you like to become a volunteer on KWVR?
We are very proud
to say that we have
operated and managed
the Railway with qualifi ed
volunteers since 1968,
running Heritage trains
every weekend and daily in
school holidays. It takes up
to 50 volunteers to run the Railway on every operating day:
staff on the stations; the guards; the signalman; the footplate
crew (Driver, Fireman and Cleaner); plus those on Civil
Maintenance duties; the volunteers staffi ng and stocking the
shops and buffets; and the administrative and engineering staff
who you probably won’t even see during your visit.
On the day, there is a Driver and Fireman, together they
control the steam locomotive. There may also be a Diesel train
in use, which also needs a Driver. Why not sit behind him and
watch how he uses the controls along the line?

Each train also needs a Guard. You
will see and hear them blowing their
whistles and waving their green fl ags to
the Driver telling him it is time to go,
or maybe pressing the buzzer that also
tells the Driver on the diesel trains it is
time to go. There is much more to the
job than that: the Guard is the one who
is responsible for you and the safety of the
train. The Guard travels in the Brake Van of
passenger and freight trains and can always
be a friendly face for advice on the day.
Station staff are in charge of the safe
operation of the stations - you will see
(and hear!) the Station Foreman blowing
his whistle to give the signal to the Guard
that the train is ready to depart. They also
sell tickets from the booking offi ces and
on the train. They also operate the level
crossing gates and signals at Oakworth
and Damems. Many volunteers start in the
Stations Department as an introduction to
playing a wider role on the Railway.
Behind the scenes is a whole team working
on the maintenance of the Railway, from the
track to the carriages you ride in, you may
even see some of them on your visit. There
is also the administrative side of the Railway:
marketing and publicising the Railway;
keeping the accounts; running the various
committees that make up the Society; organising rosters
to ensure that there are enough volunteers to operate the
Railway; setting timetables; producing the Railway’s in-house
magazine for members, Push and Pull; and much, much more…
We are continuously looking for more volunteers. It takes a
large number of people to run and operate the Railway on any
given day.
Could you do it?
As a volunteer you would receive training in your role and
enjoy the benefi ts of been a working volunteer - including
FREE KWVR travel all year round and discounts on other
Railways. You also get to become part of a well respected band
of people who have been striving for over 40 years to make
the KWVR the very best heritage Railway in the Country.
If you are interested please contact Sara North on
07841 211952 or ring Haworth station on 01535 645214.

Take Care!
We hope you enjoy your visit to the railway. Just to make sure you do, we would like to remind
you of a few safety tips. Please be aware that this is a heritage railway which runs steam engines
with old fashioned carriages. Special care should be taken when travelling:
• You may get cinders or soot in your eyes if you lean out of the windows.
• Never open the doors or touch the handles when the train is moving.
• Keep your fi ngers away from all door hinges.
• Always be careful when leaving the train - mind the gap when boarding and alighting!
• Never sit on a platform edge!
• Don’t stand too close to the edge of the platform and take special care not to let children
fall between the platform and the train.
• As with all railways, never walk on or near the track.
By following these common-sense guidelines we are confident that you and your family
will have a fun-fi lled and safe day out. If you need any special assistance just ask one of our
members of staff. Thank you.
