These are qualified nurses with special training and<br />

experience in child health. Advice can be given on<br />

all aspects of your child’s growth, behaviour and<br />

development, in addition to general health<br />

Children’s Centres<br />

Children’s Centres bring together a range of<br />

services for young children and families. Each<br />

Centre works towards Government commitments to<br />

provide:<br />

• The best start in life for every child<br />

• Better opportunities for parents<br />

• Affordable, good-quality childcare<br />

• Stronger, safer communities<br />

Each Centre differs in exactly what they offer,<br />

but can include:<br />

• Parental / Family support<br />

• Information and advice to parents and carers<br />

on a range of subjects, including local childcare<br />

• Support to childminders<br />

• Drop-in sessions and activities for children and<br />

parents/carers (may be at the Centre or in the<br />

Children, Young People and Families<br />

Parent Partnership Service<br />

This is a free, impartial, confidential service<br />

for parents and carers of children with special<br />

educational needs. They offer support and<br />

information over the phone or by visiting families<br />

at home. They will also support parents and carers<br />

in meetings with their child’s school or <strong>Early</strong> <strong>Years</strong><br />

setting.<br />

The Service also tries to promote better<br />

partnerships between everyone involved in a child’s<br />

education, offering free training, books to borrow<br />

and organising parent workshops.<br />

Children with Disabilities Service<br />

Four teams, each made up of specialist social<br />

workers and an occupational therapist, cover the<br />

county.<br />

They work with severely disabled children and<br />

young people, or those with complex health needs,<br />

up to the age of 18 years.<br />

Their aim is to support disabled children and their<br />

families and to enable them to join in family and<br />

community activities.<br />

<strong>Early</strong> <strong>Years</strong> Special Educational Needs<br />

Co-ordinators (SENCos)<br />

<strong>Early</strong> <strong>Years</strong> SENCos are qualified teachers of<br />

pre-school children with special needs, who offer<br />

advice and support to providers of <strong>Early</strong> <strong>Years</strong><br />

education. They are part of the SENSS team,<br />

contact details under District Inclusion Teams.<br />

Family Information Service (FIS)<br />

For families with children aged 0 – 19, they<br />

offer information on childcare options and other<br />

relevant issues.<br />

Portage<br />

Portage is a home based teaching service for<br />

pre-school children with Special Educational Needs.<br />

Parents work in partnership with a portage worker<br />

to help their child. The service is accessed<br />

thorough a referral from your Health Visitor or<br />

Paediatrician.<br />

This organisation offers access to advisers<br />

Family Focus<br />

This is another voluntary organisation offering<br />

support to parents who have a least one child<br />

under five. They can offer practical help when you<br />

need it, information on other services, parent/<br />

Homestart<br />

Provides informal and friendly support for families<br />

with young children. Homestart volunteers visit<br />

families who are finding it difficult to cope,<br />

whatever the reason, in their own home. They can<br />

offer a listening ear, help with the children, provide<br />

practical assistance and support parents to use local<br />

services and resources.<br />

Their free information line on 0800 068 6368 will<br />

put you in touch with your local group.<br />

Pre-<strong>School</strong> Learning <strong>All</strong>iance<br />

Provides a support network for parents and all<br />

early years settings, including voluntary-run parent<br />

& toddler groups. Advisers can help with training,<br />

quality assurance, advocacy and provide information<br />

on all aspects of <strong>Early</strong> <strong>Years</strong> provision.<br />

Support for Carers<br />

A carer is somebody who looks after, or helps to<br />

look after, a relative or friend, who because of their<br />

disability or illness cannot manage at home without<br />

help. A carer can be a neighbour, parent, brother<br />

or sister. Carers’ Association services include free<br />

and confidential advice and information, emotional<br />

support & services for young carers such as youth<br />

clubs.<br />
