LI ET AL.: INFLUENCE OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> TRIPOLE ACL 3 - 15<br />

Figure 15. <str<strong>on</strong>g>North</str<strong>on</strong>g>west <strong>African</strong> m<strong>on</strong>thly precipitati<strong>on</strong> index in GCM (a) and in observati<strong>on</strong>s (b) for earlymid<br />

and late winter for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Unit: mm/day. (a) GCM c<strong>on</strong>trol runs and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> positive/negative<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>tripole</str<strong>on</strong>g> runs. (b) Observati<strong>on</strong>al climatology and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> composite in Hulme’s data set when observed<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> has a str<strong>on</strong>gly positive/negative projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>tripole</str<strong>on</strong>g>. (c) As (b), but for coastal Africa<br />

(Morocco). Unit: mm/day. In (a), ‘‘trp’’ indicates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>tripole</str<strong>on</strong>g> run and ‘‘n_trp’’ <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> negative <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>tripole</str<strong>on</strong>g> run. In (b) and (c), ‘‘clim’’ means climatology, ‘‘+trp’’/‘‘ trp’’ indicates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> composite when<br />

observed <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> has a str<strong>on</strong>gly positive/negative projecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>tripole</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

[39] The modeled atmospheric resp<strong>on</strong>se that produces <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

str<strong>on</strong>gest <strong>rainfall</strong> anomaly over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mediterranean, that to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> negative <str<strong>on</strong>g>tripole</str<strong>on</strong>g> in late winter, is c<strong>on</strong>sistent with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pattern <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> internal model variability that is selected by<br />

composing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wettest years in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol run (Figures 7<br />

and 9). This supports <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> idea that <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> anomalies induce<br />

changes in precipitati<strong>on</strong> through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir influence <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>North</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Atlantic</str<strong>on</strong>g> jet and stormtrack, i.e.,<br />

through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir influence <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> NAO, an internal mode <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

atmospheric variability.<br />

[40] The modeled <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> with NW Africa <strong>rainfall</strong><br />

is similar to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>SST</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> with coastal Africa
