GENERAL<br />
INFORMATION<br />

00.253 Academic Good Standing: Students<br />
are in <strong>academic</strong> good standing at <strong>the</strong> university<br />
when <strong>the</strong>ir cumulative grade point average is<br />
2.00 or above. Such students are considered<br />
to be making satisfactory progress toward a<br />
qualification.<br />
00.254 Academic Warning: Students may be<br />
placed on <strong>academic</strong> warning for failure to make<br />
satisfactory progress toward a qualification.<br />
Students whose cumulative grade point average<br />
is between 1.99 and 1.51 (<strong>the</strong> actual lower limit<br />
is dependant on <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> attempted credits<br />
a student has as indicated in regulation 00.9)<br />
may be placed on <strong>academic</strong> warning for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
subsequent semester <strong>of</strong> enrolment. Students on<br />
<strong>academic</strong> warning may not enrol for more than<br />
16 semester credits. They are encouraged to seek<br />
appropriate advice and services from relevant<br />
<strong>of</strong>fices.<br />
00.256 Academic Probation: Students may be<br />
placed on <strong>academic</strong> probation for failure to make<br />

00.3 Students<br />
00.31 Registered Students<br />
00.311 Full-time Student: A full-time<br />
undergraduate student is one who is registered<br />
with <strong>the</strong> university and carries a minimum<br />
workload <strong>of</strong> 15 credits per semester, unless<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficially exempted.<br />
00.312 Part-time Student: A part-time<br />
undergraduate student is one who is registered<br />
with <strong>the</strong> University and normally carries a<br />
workload <strong>of</strong> less than 15 credits per semester.<br />
00.313 Transfer Student: A transfer student is<br />
one who is registered with UB after transferring<br />
<strong>academic</strong> credits deemed to be equivalent<br />
to UB credits. Such credits may come from<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r recognised university or equivalent, or<br />
be <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> various articulation agreements<br />
between UB and o<strong>the</strong>r institutions. Such a<br />
student can only transfer up to a maximum <strong>of</strong><br />
one-half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total credits required for <strong>the</strong><br />
programme, and must complete <strong>the</strong> remaining<br />
one-half in <strong>the</strong> university. The total credits<br />
transferred are subject to acceptance by <strong>the</strong><br />
relevant Department(s). Grade points are not<br />
transferable, and <strong>the</strong> cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> transfer<br />
students will be computed on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
work done at UB only.<br />
00.314 Visiting/Exchange/Audit Student:<br />
A visiting/exchange/audit student is one who<br />
satisfies <strong>the</strong> university entrance requirements<br />
and is registered for a selected number <strong>of</strong><br />
courses for credit or audit. Such students may be<br />
from within <strong>the</strong> country, from abroad or under<br />
exchange programmes.<br />
00.315 Special Student: A special student<br />
is one who satisfies <strong>the</strong> university entrance<br />
requirements, but does not have immediate<br />
plans to enter a programme and wants to take<br />
courses with approval from <strong>the</strong> department.<br />
Such a student shall be limited to register for a<br />
maximum <strong>of</strong> fifteen credits overall.<br />
00.32 Responsibilities <strong>of</strong> Students<br />
00.321 While <strong>the</strong> university strives to give<br />
students proper <strong>academic</strong> advice, it is <strong>the</strong><br />
responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual student to know<br />
and follow all <strong>the</strong> regulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> university.<br />
00.322 A student registered for a course is<br />
expected to fulfil all requirements prescribed for<br />
that course.<br />
00.323 A student who is unable to attend<br />
classes due to illness should notify <strong>the</strong> Director<br />
<strong>of</strong> Student Welfare <strong>of</strong> this fact within twenty<br />
one consecutive days from <strong>the</strong> day <strong>the</strong> student<br />
misses classes. Certification from a recognised<br />
health <strong>of</strong>ficer will be required in support.<br />
Prior permission or supporting evidence will<br />
be necessary for circumstances o<strong>the</strong>r than ill<br />
health.<br />
00.324 A student who enters or returns to <strong>the</strong><br />
university late shall not be entitled to extra<br />
tuition.<br />
00.325 A student may have access to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
<strong>academic</strong> transcript and has <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> appeal<br />
on any matters concerning it, to Senate through<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir Faculty Board.<br />
00.4 Exemptions, Credit Banking, Credit<br />
Transfer, and recognition <strong>of</strong> prior learning.<br />
00.41 Permission for exemptions shall be sought<br />
in all cases from <strong>the</strong> Director, Academic Services,<br />
and exemption shall be subject to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> relevant Head(s) <strong>of</strong> Department. Exemption<br />
from taking certain courses may be granted<br />
under <strong>the</strong> following conditions:<br />
a) A student who has been registered at UB can<br />
bank credits up to a maximum <strong>of</strong> ten consecutive<br />
semesters. Exemption may be given to a former<br />
UB student who subsequently rejoins UB if<br />
such a student has banked credits. Once such<br />
exemption has been granted, <strong>the</strong> programme<br />
for which <strong>the</strong> student is currently registered will<br />
be credited with <strong>the</strong> original marks obtained for<br />
<strong>the</strong> credit course(s) and <strong>the</strong> corresponding grade<br />
points.<br />
b) Exemption(s) may be given to a student if such<br />
a student took a course or courses at ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
recognised university or institution with which<br />
UB has a formal articulation agreement, within<br />
ten semesters prior to registration. Once such<br />
exemptions have been granted, <strong>the</strong> student<br />
may transfer up to a maximum <strong>of</strong> one-half <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> total credits required for <strong>the</strong> programme.<br />
However, grade points for such students are<br />
not transferable, and <strong>the</strong> cumulative GPA shall<br />
be computed on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work done at<br />
UB only.<br />
c) Exemption may be granted to a student if<br />
such a student took a course or courses at<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r recognized University or institution with<br />
which UB has no formal articulation agreement<br />
within ten semesters prior to registration. Such<br />
exemptions shall be based on course to course<br />
articulation and once <strong>the</strong>y have been granted<br />
a student may transfer up to a maximum <strong>of</strong><br />
one third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total credits required for <strong>the</strong><br />
programme. However grade points for such<br />
students are not transferable, and <strong>the</strong> cumulative<br />
GPA shall be computed on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> work done<br />
at UB only.<br />
(d) Exemption(s) may be given to a student<br />
for relevant work experience and recognised<br />
prior learning upon satisfactory performance<br />
in assessments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge, skills and<br />
experience in <strong>the</strong> area as outlined in Section<br />
6.0 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> policy organised by <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />
A student who has performed such tests shall<br />
be awarded an appropriate grade, and may<br />
be exempted in <strong>the</strong> relevant courses up to a<br />
maximum <strong>of</strong> one-sixth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total credits<br />
required for <strong>the</strong> programme.<br />
00.42 Articulation agreements between UB and<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r institutions resulting in de facto exemptions<br />
shall be applied to general admissions to diploma,<br />
higher diploma and degree programmes as<br />
well as to satisfy programme specific internal<br />
requirements<br />
00.5 Entrance Qualifications<br />
00.51 Normal Entry Scheme<br />
00.511 The normal requirement for entrance to<br />
Diploma Programmes are specified in General<br />
Regulation 10.2.<br />
