Two golfers played all nine rounds and another golfer participated in eight rounds. With five players on this season’s team, Head Coach Jeff Newman is hoping his team can make an impact on the team standings at the five invitationals they play in. “Overall, I think we had a very successful season last year,’’ Newman states. “We are trying to build a program from the ground up which might take a few years, but I believe we are headed in the right direction.” Three players return this season for the Mount, all sophomores. They are last year’s leading golfer, Megan Dickman plus Lauren Byrd and Kellie Kammer. Two newcomers, sophomore Alison Damon, who is also on the Mount’s track & field team, and freshman Stephanie Schoenfeld round out the team. Newman feels the addition of Lauren Hessel, a recent Mount graduate and former Lions’ golfer, will help the team this season as assistant coach. He’s hoping to couple that additional coaching approach and increased work on skills by the players into better results this fall. “The addition of Lauren should have a huge impact on the program,’’ Newman adds. “Her dedication to the Mount and the 2007 ROSTER Name Cl. Batesville, IN/Oldenburg Academy golf program should help take this program to the next level.” Among the highlights of last season’s team were Dickman’s personal-best 93 at the Ohio Northern University Invitational and Byrd’s personal-best 115 at the Franklin College Invitational. Newman said that first-time golfer Kellie Kammer also showed continued improvement throughout the season, lowering her scores by almost 30 strokes. Newman said he’s counting on all three returning golfers to improve this fall. Damon and Schoenfeld will give the team depth and allow them to requisite five golfers to register team scores at invitationals. Newman said he’s looking to add to the team’s numbers in the future and is looking to build the Lions’ program into a conference title contender. For the immediate future, he’s looking for the players to become more consistent and to constantly improve. “I am very pleased with the direction the program is headed,’’ Newman says. “With a couple of strong recruits next season, along with the foundation we have now, I believe we can be one of the top three or four programs in the HCAC.” Name Cl. Cincinnati, OH/Seton 2007 COACHING STAFF Head Coach Jeff Newman Jeff Newman begins this third season as head women’s golf. Coach Newman was hired in July 2005 by the College as a full-time coach, with the duties of head women’s golf coach and assistant baseball coach. Newman, who was an assistant baseball coach at the Mount for three seasons (2002-2004), was an assistant baseball coach at the University of Cincinnati before returning to the Mount. Newman has also been the head baseball coach for the Midland summer baseball program since 2002, an athletic director at Clermont Northeastern High School and Middle School (1998-2000), and head varsity baseball coach at CNE High School (1999-2000). Newman graduated in 1998 from Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina, with a bachelor’s degree in sports administration. At Barton he played baseball for two seasons and was an all-conference selection. He also played collegiately at Kentucky Wesleyan University for two seasons. Newman and his wife, Michelle, and two daughters, Bree and Corrine, reside in Cincinnati, Ohio. 7
COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 2007 COACHING STAFF (Continued) Assistant Coach Lauren Hessel Lauren Hessel begins her first season as the Mount’s women’s assistant golf coach. She graduated from the Mount in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in middle childhood education. She was a four-year member of the Lions’ golf program – the only person to play four seasons for the Mount’s women’s golf team. Hessel is employed as a sixth grade math teacher at Allison Street Elementary School in the Norwood City School District. In addition, Hessel has coached junior varsity girls’ golf at her high school alma mater, Oak Hills, and is coaching sixth and seventh grade girls’ basketball at Orient Academy, a charter school in Cincinnati, Ohio. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. 2007 PLAYERS’ PROFILES Lauren Bryd Sophomore • Major: Special Education High School: Seton (Cincinnati, Ohio) Byrd returns for her second season with the Lions. She played in eight of the nine rounds the Mount took part in during 2006, and her best placing was at the Hanover Invitational where she was 21st.. Lauren is the daughter of Lori Byrd and Jim Muench. Alison Damon Sophomore • Major: Psychology High School: McAuley (Cincinnati, Ohio) Damon joins the Lions for her first season. She was on the Mount’s track ad field team last season and was on Dean’s List. In addition, Damon has worked in the Children’s Center on campus and at the Women’s Connection helping with childcare. While in high school, Damon was on her school’s Honor Roll and in the National Honor Society. This year, Damon is a Campus Ambassador. Alison is the daughter of Jan and Paul Damon. Megan Dickman Sophomore • Major: Nursing High School: Oldenburg Academy (Batesville, Indiana) Dickman returns for her second season with the Mount. Dickman played in all nine rounds in 2006 and led the Lions at each invitational. She completed the season with a team-best average of 97.0. Dickman’s best finish was at the Wittenberg Invitational where she received fourth place. Megan is the daughter of Mary Beth and Jerry Dickman. Kellie Kammer Sophomore • Major: Undeclared High School: Seton (Cincinnati, Ohio) Kammer returns for her second season with the Lions. She participated in all nine rounds the Mount took part in last year, and her lowest round was at the Transylvania University Invitational. Kammer’s best finish was at Wittenberg University where she received 21st place. Kellie is the daughter of Carol and Albert Kammer. Stephanie Schoenfeld Freshman • Major: Special Education High School: Seton (Cincinnati, Ohio) Schoenfeld joins the Lions for her first season. She was on the Honor Roll in high school, involved with Campus Ministry for two years, in Student Council during her senior year and was in the Service Club for all four years. In addition, Schoenfeld volunteered at Women’s Connection, worked with Special Olympics for three years, helped at the Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home during her senior year,and helped at Adaptive Aquatics for four years.
