The talentedplay of last year’s first-year golfers make for a bright future. Theaddition of three new golfers figures to help the Lions complete amuch better season this year.Head coach Joe Sparhawk returns for his fourth season as theMount’s head golf coach. Rounding out this year’s coaching staff isformer Mount golfer A.J. Hoffmann, who graduated from theMount last winter and was one of the team’s top golfers last year.Last season, the Mount had an up-and-down year. The seasonended with a seventh place finish in the HCAC championship andclosed out what Sparhawk called a frustrating season for the Lions. The one high point of the season came at the Mount InvitationalI in which they captured their first-ever invitational victory. Thisseason, the Lions goal is consistency at all times.“The big thing we need to improve on is consistency,’’ Sparhawksays. “I need to be able to count on guys shooting certain scores.Last year was an improvement from the year before, but I needmore of the same from these guys if we are going to compete forthe conference championship. The spring season is short and wedon’t have time to have a bad round or a bad tournament.”According to Sparhawk, this year’s returning golfers Chris Lamb,Neil Skirvin and Michael Whalen are all looking to make a bigimpact in 2008. Lamb was the Mount’s top golfer last seasonleading the Lions at almost every event and is projected to be theMount’s top golfer again this year. After missing most of last seasondue to illness, Steve Pence plans to reclaim his spot as one of the topgolfers on the team as well. The team’s newcomers, including KyleVollmer and Nick Barlow, will add depth and stability to the team. With many tough teams in the conference, winning this year’sHCAC title for the Lions could prove to be a difficult job.Transylvania appears to be the top team once again while Franklinand the rest of the teams within the conference also look to fieldvery competitive teams. Despite the tough conference, Sparhawk isoptimistic about the qualities he sees in his team this season.“This is the hardest-working team I have ever had at the Mount,’’Sparhawk states. “I think their determination and perseverance willcarry over into the season. I expect much improvement from lastyear’s team.”7
