Please visit us atwww.msj.edu to stay current with the <strong>Lions</strong> and the progress oncampus.God bless,Tony Aretz, Ph.D.PresidentMeet the Director of <strong>Athletics</strong>Steve RadcliffeSteve Radcliffe enters his 17th year as the <strong>Lions</strong>’athletics director for the <strong>2011</strong>-2012 school year, andhe looks forward to another outstanding season ofathletics at the Mount.Radcliffe, who oversees 22 athletic programs atthe Mount, has long been a part of the sportsprograms at the College. Radcliffe began his career at the Mount in1986 as an athletic trainer and was hired to implement the Mount’sfirst academic program for athletic training in 1989. In addition toteaching athletic training, he was the <strong>Lions</strong>’ head athletic trainer forall the intercollegiate sports at the College.Radcliffe became the Mount’s athletic director in 1995. Upon enteringthe position, he stressed the importance of upholding the College’sstellar reputation of academics and athletics as a positive influencein student life and development at the Mount. Radcliffe received hisbachelor’s degree in 1978 from the University of Montana and his master’sdegree in physical education in 1981 from Miami University (Ohio).Steve and his wife, Darlene, have two children, Victoria and Michael.The Radcliffes live in Delhi.Heartland Collegiate Athletic ConferenceThe Mount is a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference(HCAC) and is also a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) Division III. This season, CoachMenhorn wants the team to focus on maintaining consistency andimproving every day through hard work. Maintaining Coach Menhorn’sfocus will help the <strong>Lions</strong> achieve their goals in <strong>2011</strong>. Coach Menhornwants to improve the team’s overall and HCAC won-lost records, andbelieves these improvements can be accomplished through hard workand dedication.“I expect hard work and dedication from the players,’’ Menhorn adds.“They are vital to the growth of the program.”The <strong>Lions</strong> have a good mix of underclassmen and upperclassmengoing into the <strong>2011</strong> season. The Mount returns four athletes from the2010 squad and welcomes two newcomers as well as senior BridgetKent who played for the Mount during her freshman year.Coach Menhorn sees the main strengths of this year’s team as havinga couple great leaders that are vocal and positive as well as havingstrong upperclassmen, which she says is important to a successfulprogram. When it comes to weaknesses, Coach Menhorn mentions thather squad has not had much success over the past few years, somethingshe hopes to turn around soon.“They are still developing a winning mentality,” adds Coach Menhorn.The <strong>Lions</strong> will have to replace Brittany Teagle and Judy Frey, bothof whom have graduated. They were two of the most accomplishedfemale tennis players in Mount history. Teagle finished her career firstin matches played with 125, overall wins with 83, single wins with 43,and double wins with 40. Teagle was also selected Honorable MentionAll-HCAC in 2010 and was a three-time Academic All-HCAC selection.Frey finished her career fourth in Mount women’s tennis history insingles wins with 33, third in doubles wins with 29, fourth with 62overall wins, third in matches played with 119, was a two-time HCACAll-Sportsmanship Team selection, and a three-time Academic All-HCAC.The <strong>Lions</strong> will look toward senior Lauren McDonald to help fill thevoid. McDonald was the <strong>Lions</strong>’ number four singles player in 2010. Shefinished 3-5 in singles and 9-6 in doubles, good for an overall record of12-11 in 2010. McDonald also finished third in the fourth singles flight10COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH<strong>Lions</strong>’ junior Carolyn Biedenharn recorded five wins in 2010 play.of the HCAC Flighted Tournament. The <strong>Lions</strong> will also look to juniorKelsey Donovan to step up in <strong>2011</strong>. Coach Menhorn labeled Donovanas powerful and says that she will likely compete at the number twoor number three singles spot for the <strong>Lions</strong> in <strong>2011</strong>.Coach Menhorn is also counting on a big season from incomingfreshman Brittany Hammond. “She has a great attitude and enthusiasm,and will be a great addition.”The rest of the roster includes sophomores Maureen Rabaut andDallas Harris, junior Carolyn Biedenharn, and senior Bridget Kent.All but Rabaut have college playing experience.This season, Coach Menhorn wants the team to utilize non-conferencematches to prepare the team for the HCAC matches, which she says arethe most important.“HCAC matches are important,’’ Menhorn states. “They get the teaminto the HCAC tournament and ultimately the NCAA tournament.”The top four teams in the HCAC make the HCAC Tournament, so the<strong>Lions</strong> will be working hard to this season to achieve their goals.

She is also the College’swomen’s basketball assistant coach.Menhorn joined the Mount coaching staff aftertwo seasons as the first assistant women’s basketballcoach, as well as the assistant women’s golf coach at AlleghenyCollege. While at Allegheny she helped the women’s basketball teamto a record a cumulative 3.0 GPA during her final year, and she alsocoached numerous all-conference players.Prior to Allegheny, she spent four years as a student-athlete atUniversity of Pittsburgh at Greensburg where both her team and sheexcelled. While at Pitt-Greensburg, she was part of three, 20-or-morewin seasons, three AMCC championship games, three ECAC Tournamentappearances, and one ECAC Championship. She garnered AMCCAll-Conference honors four straight seasons (three times First Team)and finished as the second-leading all-time scorer with 1,502 points.Coach Menhorn has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from theUniversity of Pittsburgh at Greenburg (2008).In addition, Menhorn has run girls’ basketball camps, been a sportscamp counselor, and has conducted numerous basketball clinics. Shewas the Pitt-Greensburg Female Athlete of the Year (2007 and 2008)and a two-time team captain. Mount in the HCACThe women’s tennis team has produced varying degrees of successas a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. OtherHCAC institutions that the <strong>Lions</strong> compete against include: AndersonUniversity, Bluffton University, Defiance College, Earlham College,Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester College, Rose-HulmanInstitute of Technology, and Transylvania University.In 1998, the Mount’s first year in HCAC action, the <strong>Lions</strong> placedseventh out of seven schools. They improved their finish to fourth placein 1999. During that season’s conference tournament the <strong>Lions</strong> gainedpoints in the HCAC Tournament from Molly McGraw, Nicole Lampe,Meghan Perry, and the doubles team of Emily Agler and Meredith Finley.Kelly Kirby and Emily Agler picked up HCAC Player of the Week honorsduring the season.In 2000, the <strong>Lions</strong> placed fifth out of seven schools, but gainedindividual singles finishes from Lampe and Kirby. Jacqueline Gering andLampe won HCAC Player of the Week awards during the season.The 2001 season saw the Mount place sixth out of seven teams atthe HCAC Tournament, but Gering, Stephanie Kiehl and McGraw tied thebest ever Mount individual HCAC Tournament finishes, with each placingfourth in their flight. Gering and Kiehl placed fourth in third doubles,and McGraw won All-HCAC honors, becoming the first in Mount historyto be selected to the All-HCAC Team. Although they placed seventh as ateam in the HCAC Tournament in 2002, the Mount received solid resultsfrom Lampe, who was fifth in fifth singles, and Christina Nemec, whowas fifth in fourth singles. The doubles team of Katie Giesen and Kiehlwere fourth in third doubles.In 2003, the <strong>Lions</strong> finished in fifth place, which tied their secondbestHCAC Tournament finish ever.In 2004, the <strong>Lions</strong> struggled in conference play, losing each oftheir regular season matches, including a hard-fought 5-4 setbackto Defiance. Christina Nemec closed a solid season at the HCACTournament, placing fourth in the second singles flight, and capturingAll-HCAC honors. The 2005 team was also winless in the HCAC regularseason and finished eighth in the HCAC Tournament. The 2006 <strong>Lions</strong>also were winless during the HCAC regular season campaign and did notqualify to the HCAC Tournament.In 2007, the Mount finished seventh in the HCAC regular seasonstandings, but did not qualify to the four-team HCAC Tournament.The two victories, over Bluffton and Defiance, where the most HCACwins since the 2002 season. They also dropped a 5-4 decision toHCAC-foe Transylvania University. Laura Robison was named to theAll-Conference team.In 2008, the <strong>Lions</strong>’ tennis team won three conference matches, andfinished sixth at the HCAC Individual Championship. Brittany Teaglerecorded a second place finish at fourth singles while Whitney Thomasearned a spot on the All-HCAC team. The Mount played competitivelythroughout the HCAC regular season, falling to conference championHanover College, 5-4.The 2009 season saw the Mount record a 2-5 mark in HCAC play,recording 9-0 shutout wins over both Manchester and Defiance. The<strong>Lions</strong> also dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to HCAC-rival Franklin.In addition, the Mount recorded their highest finish at the HCAC SinglesFlighted Tournament, turning in a third place standing. Judy Frey wonthe third singles flight while Laura Robison was second in secondsingles. Whitney Thomas and Robison were each named First TeamAll-HCAC while Frey was named to the HCAC All-Sportsmanship team.In 2010, the <strong>Lions</strong> compiled a 1-7 record in HCAC competitionfinishing eighth in the HCAC. The <strong>Lions</strong> also finished eighth in theHCAC Flighted Tournament. The Mount had big wins this season againstDefiance College (7-2), Oakland City University (9-0), and SinclairCommunity College (7-2). The <strong>Lions</strong> received strong play from senior,Brittany Teagle. Teagle finished the season with a 17-10 overall record(8-4 in singles, 9-6 in doubles).
