Voices of Spirit and Grace
De r Ge i s t h i l f t u n s r e r Sc h wa c h h e i t a u f, BWV 226
The Spirit helps our weakness, for we know not what we should pray
nor how we ought to pray;
but the Spirit pleads for us in the best possible way
with inexpressible sighing.
You holy fire, sweet consolation,
now help us, joyful and consoled,
to remain steadfast in your service;
let affliction not drive us away.
O Lord, prepare us by your power
and strengthen our feeble flesh,
so that we here may gallantly struggle
through death and life to reach you.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
The two Seraphim proclaimed, one to the other:
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts.
The whole earth is full of his glory.
There are three who give testimony in heaven:
The Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit;
And these three are one.
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts.
The whole earth is full of his glory.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, died, and was buried.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Don Ventura [an old man], don’t you know that I knew you are dating Chanflín?
I put your head in a saddlebag and cut it off with the tip of a machete.
I arrest you and take you to the headquarters of my friend Corporal Valentin,
And there you will face Bilín, the brother of Chanflín.
Look at Chanflín with “tourist socks,”
Looking carefully at her she looks like an artist.
Look at Chanflín with silk socks,
Looking carefully at her she looks like an old lady.
Look at Chanflín with golden socks,
Looking carefully at her, she looks like a “treasure.”
The Flight (from Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine)
In the notes on Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, composer Eric Whitacre writes:
“I started with a simple concept: what would it sound like if Leonardo Da Vinci were dreaming? And more
specifically, what kind of music would fill the mind of such a genius? The drama would tell the story of Leonardo
being tormented by the calling of the air, tortured to such degree that his only recourse was to solve the riddle and
figure out how to fly.”
Voices of Hope
Hymn to the Eternal Flame (from To Be Certain of the Dawn)
Erin Gaffaney, soloist
Stephen Paulus
(b. 1949)
The Hymn to the Eternal Flame is the centerpiece of Stephen Paulus and Michael Dennis Browne’s Holocaust oratorio
To Be Certain of the Dawn. The work pays tribute to the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust, and honors
Holocaust survivors and their descendants. The Hymn commemorates all the children who died. The words are based
on the image of the central flame and many thousands of reflected flames at the children’s memorial at the Yad Vashem
museum in Jerusalem. In spite of the terrible ways in which the Nazis used fire, we can see the flame as a symbol of
hope; in it, we can sense mystical victory— something lasts (beyond the body); something shines. In many faiths, the
flame is the oldest image which suggests that God is with us, inside us, and that our small individual self is, finally, a part
of the Divine.This transformative work was performed on the campuses of SCSU and St. John’s University last spring.
In May of 2008, members of the SCSU and SJU/CSB choir and orchestra toured Germany, France and Switzerland and
presented the European premiere at the site of a former Nazi concentration camp in Natzweil-Struthof.
