MATHS DEPARTMENT Superb results in the year’s Junior Mathematics Challenge for Years 7 and 8. This year we saw two Golds, six Silvers and twelve Bronze Awards. Seventeen Highly Commended Awards were given as well! The event, jointly organised by the British Red Cross to mark this year’s Refugee Week, highlighted the contributions refugees make to life in the UK through a series of workshops. Mohammad Asghar, AM for South Wales East and Shadow Minister for Equalities and Sport, joined the students during the morning to observe the activities taking place. Throughout the day, the students attended different presentations from organisations such as Amnesty International, 29 October - 2 November 2012 Half Term 5 November 2012 Year 7 Parents’ Evening (1) 6 November 2012 Sixth Form Awards Evening 12 November 2012 Year 7 Parents’ Evening (2) 19 November 2012 Year 13 Photograph Day 26 November 2012 INSET Day 10 December 2012 Year 12 Parents Evening (1) 21 December 2012 INSET Day 24 December - 4 January 2013 Christmas Holidays the Chinese Cultural Centre and Forced Marriage Unit to learn about issues affecting refugees. The students also enjoyed performances by a troop of Zimbabwean drummers and observed African cookery demonstrations.
COUNTDOWN TO LONDON OLYMPICS 2012 It has been an incredibly busy term preparing for our very own Olympic celebrations. The last week of term will see all pupils engaged in a number of cross curricular workshops, planned by pupils and staff around Olympic themes. Olympic torches are being created in design technology and the music and drama departments have been busy preparing items for the opening and closing ceremonies of our very own Olympic Games to be held at UWIC campus on the final day of term. Pupils will represent different countries and compete in events such as athletics, cycling, tennis, table tennis, badminton, 5-a-side football and hockey. Famous Olympians such as sprinter, Jamie Baulch will be joining us on the day to support pupils in this count down to the summer games. In readiness for the big event, the Bassaleg Olympic Society have organised and run a non-uniform day with an Olympic sporting theme, inviting pupils and staff to sport colours of red, white and blue to help raise funds for our own Olympic Games and charity. In addition, the Bassaleg Olympic Society launched their very own logo competition in May with the winning entry being embroidered on to the T-shirts both pupils and staff will wear on the last day. Well done to Joanna Ross-Barrett and Mr Ashton on the fantastic winning designs. As the Olympic torch relay entered Newport, 14 fortunate students, selected by their Heads of Year were chosen to go to the relay and see the flame pass through our city.
