Superb results in the year’s Junior Mathematics Challenge for<br />
Years 7 and 8. This year we saw two Golds, six Silvers and twelve<br />
Bronze Awards. Seventeen Highly Commended Awards were<br />

INSET Day<br />
A celebration of the positive contribution that refugees bring to<br />
South Wales took place at Bassaleg School on 15 June. The<br />
event, jointly organised by the British Red Cross to mark this year’s<br />
Refugee Week, highlighted the contributions refugees make to life<br />
in the UK through a series of workshops. Mohammad Asghar, AM<br />
for South Wales East and Shadow Minister for Equalities and Sport,<br />
joined the students during the morning to observe the activities<br />
taking place. Throughout the day, the students attended different<br />
presentations from organisations such as Amnesty International,<br />

the Chinese Cultural Centre and Forced Marriage Unit to learn<br />
about issues affecting refugees. The students also enjoyed<br />
performances by a troop of Zimbabwean drummers<br />
and observed African cookery demonstrations.
